Year in Review

So the above quote – for the uninitiated – is from Seinfeld when George gets a massage from a dude. In the episode, the guy massages a few inches from “there” and George thinks it moves. Specifically, he says, “It moved! It was imperceptible but I felt it!”

Well, this year for OCTV, something moved but it was anything but imperceptible. Let’s get down to brass tacks. This is a graph of our monthly readership over the last two years:

Killing it.

Killing it.

As you can see, it has been quite the precipitous climb. October is typically a good month to gauge by because it has minimal breaks in programming, popular Halloween-themed episodes, and is the meat of the season for most shows. October 2010, we had about 6,500 pageviews. October 2011, it jumped to 26,000 pageviews. For October 2012, we had just short of 50,000 pageviews. And that is just one month. For the year, we had people view OCTV just short of half a million times.

The cocaine and stripper train doesn’t stop there. Our biggest day (almost 2,400 views) occurred during the fabled month of October and was thanks in large part to hockeybychoice’s always popular Weekly Gif Roundups.

This year, OCTV writers pumped out 531 posts. Considering most of our posts go up on weekdays, that is about 2 posts per day. That is pretty fucking prolific for a ragtag group of TV fans such as ourselves.

By the by, these stats and more are available here.

Here are a few things that have changed over the past month that you may or may not have noticed:

  • A mobile theme – Visit OCTV on your mobile device and you will see a nice stream-lined version of shit we usually shovel straight on to your computer screen!
  • More places to get your fill – We now have an OCTV Facebook page (go and Like it!) and an OCTV Tumblr. Currently, they just repost the things we post on OCTV, but we may find some other uses for them in the future. Plus it may fit better into your OCTV reading workflow.

And here are some upcoming things to look forward to:

  • Some new visuals – Nothing set in stone yet, but maybe we can all talk our wonderful benefactor, SB, into an awesome new header when she has some time. I’m thinking it is about time for a new theme as well.
  • Double infinity scrolling – Ok, technically it is just infinite scrolling, but double infinity sounded some much more Revengish. This one will come with the new theme since our current theme doesn’t support such killer features.

Finally, the reason all this stuff even happens is because of our readers. You guys are here, every single day, reading our stuff, commenting on posts, and spreading the word. We have what I consider to be a true community of people who LOVE TV and really want to show and share that love. I hope you guys enjoy this site as much as we do.

If you have a chance, let us know how your 2012 went and what you have in store for 2013! Comments are awesome!

Can you believe it?  We’ve made it through another year of TV AND the Mayan apocalypse!  Good for us.  And now, to celebrate, Nicole and I have collaborated on our annual year-end wrap-up post (which would have been posted sooner, except that I started drinking on New Year’s Eve AT midnight, slept in on New Year’s Day until 11 a.m. and then had to go IHOP off my hangover.  You know how it is).  And come back tomorrow, because Andy will be sharing some information and thoughts on OCTV, some behind the scenes details, cool updates and things ahead, and anything else he feels like sharing!  For now, though, as always, Nicole’s thoughts are in purple and mine (SB’s) are in blue.  And be sure to comment and share your thoughts on the year in TV!

Revenge

Full disclosure?  I gave this one up.  I found it was piling up on the DVR, and then  I got behind on it, and then I realized I didn’t really care.  I mean, don’t get me wrong–it’s a good show and there’s nothing wrong with it, I think I just kind of … got bored with all the Revenge.  Which I think is probably a fundamental problem between me and the show.

Well, I haven’t given the show up yet – sometimes I just want an hour of pure soapy craziness in my life. But I definitely have become less enchanted than I was last year. I don’t know why exactly, but I do know that it has something to do with the Bar Story That Will Not Die and the fact that Nolan, despite being in the show regularly, feels so far removed from everything this year. He’s off with Rebecca from Greek while Emily’s gallivanting around with Aiden and I don’t know – it all just feels very disjointed. Also, is ANYBODY buying Daniel as a suddenly deep, wounded wannabe poet-slash-Business Genius? No, nobody is. But, you know, then they’ll have a scene where everyone is dressed like they’re going on a 1950’s safari while they shoot skeet in the backyard of the manse and make veiled threats at each other, and it’s just like, ‘ahhhhhhh’. Revenge, take me away.

The Good Wife

The show is still good, and continues to have some of THE BEST guest stars of any network show (but a word of advice to Christina Ricci: never play a stand up comedian again. It is decidedly not in your wheelhouse.) But holy good goddamn, can we talk about the clusterfuck that was Kalinda and her ex-husband? What even WAS that? You know, my biggest problem with it wasn’t that Nick was a shitty character (which he absolutely was) – it was how much he dragged the character of Kalinda down with him. He was so obviously a crazy nutjob that there was absolutely zero conflict in watching them together. I had no moments of ‘oh, he’s so bad for her but they’re SO GOOD together’, like you get with say, Klaus and Caroline on TVD. Nope, he was just a disgusting, ill-tempered douche – the kind of guy who’ll fingerbang you in public (in an ice cream shoppe, no less!) and then take any hotness out of it by dipping his digits in your perfectly good sundae. But his worst transgression was how he changed my view of Kalinda. Before Nick, she was a kickass mysterious ballbuster who got shit done, and around Nick she was weak, submissive and kind of pathetic. Get her back to fucking intel out of her FBI sometimes-girlfriend and kicking witnesses asses when they don’t cooperate, and then maybe we can move past the Age of Nick and pretend it never happened.

Dexter

[Spoilers] I caught up with this show over the summer, so I was amped for season 7 after that season 6 finale. For one, fucking YES. Deb finally knew. There was no getting around it – Dexter was caught by his sister and he couldn’t talk his way out of it for once. On top of all of that, Deb was about to tell him that she was IN LOVE with him. I was so giddy, I can’t even tell you. And season seven got off to a fantastic start. It finished pretty strongly too, don’t get me wrong. But there were some missteps, like killing off Isaac, who was probably the best guest star in a long time, so soon. And so unceremoniously! I think losing him hurt the rest of the season, and it certainly hurt the strip club/Russian mafia arc. Without Isaac, who is there to even care about over there? Nadia? The other dude? No. Quinn? Certainly not – he’s so boring now that I kind of hope Dexter kills him just for being irritating.

But the Dexter-Deb-Hannah arc worked for me big time, even though the show seems to have dropped the whole ‘Deb loves Dexter’ thing that I’ve been so excited about. I have to believe that this won’t last – they WILL have at least one inappropriate make out session, right? Please show – you can’t introduce Chekov’s quasi-incestual desire and then back away before it goes off, so to speak. My inner perv REALLY wants this to happen. As for everything else, I love where Deb ended up, but I have questions (she used her own gun – how DUMB is she and how will this affect the story she and Dexter have to spin?). Also, I’m glad that it was LaGuerta who bit the dust even with all of the Angel is Retiring foreshadowing that seemed to be happening – I can’t lose Battista, y’all. He’s too adorable. Now bring on season 8 and let the Morgan sibling love affair/murder spree commence.

I have only seen through the John Lithgow season (four, I believe), so I skipped Nicole’s review and I am still trying to decide if I should just wait till the whole thing is over, or try to catch up now and find a way to watch along so I don’t get spoiled on what will no doubt be a huge ending. Here is the last of our Year In Review posts for the 2012 regular season of tv. As usual, SB’s thoughts are in blue and mine are in purple. Read, agree, disagree, comment – you know how it goes! And get ready, because our summer 2012 coverage is kicking off soon!

SNL

OH MY GOD, KRISTEN WIIG IS GONE!  Our long national nightmare is over!  AND ALL THE PEOPLE REJOICED!

Okay.  It’s out of the way.  You knew it was coming, right?  Anyway, I thought this was a really good and funny season of SNL (the Mick Jagger finale not included).  Let’s review some highlights:

  • Jason Segel and The Muppets
  • Capitalizing on all the pedophiles in the news with Steve Buscemi (which would make an awesome title of a standalone TV show, right?)
  • JIMMY FALLON’S CHRISTMAS EPISODE, AM I RIGHT?  God, all the alums and everyone having such a good time … best ever.
  • Channing Tatum’s strippery monologue (and also, who knew he was so hilarious?)
  • Eli Manning making me laugh almost as much as Peyton did, which is a huge compliment
  • Even Lindsay Lohan was sort of interesting to watch, in a horrifying trainwreck sort of way
  • The introduction of the fake soap opera “The Californians”, which hilariously mocks how everyone in California is obsessed with driving directions and provided the INSANELY fun to imitate “What are YOU doing here?”

So overall, a very fun year.  But the big question on everyone’s mind was, where the fuck was Timberlake?  Yeah, yeah, he showed up from time to time, but I need him to host AT LEAST once a year.  Step aside, Alec Baldwin.  (And also, please no more Katy Perry ever on anything, okay TV Gods?)

Well, it’s time to discuss shows in the tv graveyard known as Friday nights. You’ll notice that while there aren’t many (there are two), we had a lot to say about both of them. We have one more post in this series, covering weekend and random shows so make sure you come back and check that out.

As always, SB’s thoughts are in blue and mine are in purple.

Supernatural

I have to say … I REALLY enjoyed this season of Supernatural.  Season 6 eventually came around, but until the very end where it all tied together, it was a bit of a shit show, and I don’t think the transition from Kripke to Sera Gamble was as seamless as everyone had hoped.  But, that said, I do think she delivered a great season and proved her value.  This year had everything I look for as a Supernatural fan–cool monsters of the week, brotherly bonding and teamwork (and less estrangement), funny lines, gross-out moments that make you almost puke, scenes that make you cry actual tears (Sam taking Bobby’s hand and thanking him for everything while he was in a coma), Metallicar porn, and best of all … WEIRDO CAS.  God, I love him so much.  When he made Dean pull his finger … it was like a spiritual (sexual?) awakening for me.

I think the other really good thing about this season (especially after the last) was just how well the Leviathan story worked.  And I like that even though Dick Roman is gone, it’s not fully wrapped up yet.  And oh my GOD, perfect set up for next season.  I’m really excited about it.  And Dick was a good villain, because he was funny and creepy and weird, and definitely scary.  But also because of the dick jokes.  Did you guys catch in the last episode when the newscaster on the TV in the background asked why Dick is so hard to beat?  HAHAHAHAHA!  I feel like the show had a really good time with that this year, and as a result, so did I.  This was a good season.

We haven’t really done this for any of the other shows, but can we take a minute and discuss my wishlist for next season?  I’m REALLY excited for Jeremy Carver to come back, and I think it’ll be awesome.  And I hope it’s not the last.  You just really never know with this show.  I’ve been preparing for it to be the last season since S5, but I honestly kind of feel like the boys like their lives how they are, and if they feel like the show still has good stories, they’ll keep going.  BUT, if for some reason this is the last season, I REALLY want to see John Winchester again.  Show, do not keep holding out.  Or JDM, do not keep holding out.  I mean really, you’re not THAT busy.  And before the show ends, I REALLY want to see Missouri Mosely again.  I loved her and I’ve been waiting for her return since the first season.  I guess that’s it, really.  Just two things.  You can do it, Show!

Welcome to day three of our 2012 tv year in review! In case you missed the first three, they can be found here and here and here. Thursday television is an embarassment of riches, so check out our thoughts on what we liked, what we didn’t and our thoughts on some behind the scenes drama. Then hit the comments with your opinions, shows we didn’t mention, all of that!

As always, SB’s (@offcolortv) comments are in blue and Nicole’s (@nicole_octv) are in purple.

The Vampire Diaries

Elena is a vampire now. ELENA IS A VAMPIRE NOW!! I’m still not over it – and by ‘it’, I mean my excitement about this development. I’ve loved this show since SB convinced me to start watching it halfway through season one, but if there was one thing I was never crazy about it was the idea of Elena as the perfect, desired-by-all heroine. It’s a difficult role because she has to be special enough to justify the fact that she’s the center of the (show’s) universe, but she also has to be relatable and likeable. For the most part, TVD has done as good a job as they could, but I still found her to be the most boring part of a show filled with much more interesting characters. She was so serious, so angst-ridden, so worried and SO FUCKING PEFECT all the time. Like, I get it Elena. Can you just go and get drunk at a party for once in your freaking life? But now, there is so much potential for the character to be exciting, fun and DANGEROUS. I love it. And The Dobrev is clearly talented enough to pull off whatever they throw at her. Just please, don’t make her into a sad, angsty vampire. To the writers – think more Caroline with a twist of Damon, less Good Stefan. What else? I’m glad Jeremy made it to season four. Same goes for Matt. I’m glad that Klaus is not gone for good. I still don’t really get what’s going on with him and Tyler and Bonnie, but I’m glad it’s happening. I’ll miss Alcoholaric a lot. Who’s Damon going to drink with now? (Note – this is of far more concern to me than any aspect of the love triangle, as it should be.) Lastly, an open plea to Julie Plec – I know that tv is a business and viewers are your customers, but please don’t let the inmates run the asylum. Those crazy assholes who storm twitter every Friday with Team Whatever-motivated death threats? They’re fucking nuts. Don’t cater to them. Tell your story, whatever it is. Let the crazies make their charts counting the number of Delena vs. Stelena scenes (ugh, I hate portmanteaus so much). If the show is good, we will watch it. That is all.

Well, unsurprisingly, I pretty much agree with everything that Nicole said, especially that I’m miss Alcoholaric.  Except I am BEYOND excited about his new show, so I’ll allow it.  Also, I reiterate my concern that the show has turned a little pussy about killing people off for real, because even though it makes me sad, it’s really a necessary part of what makes this show so GOOD.

Obviously, I break the show down every week and you all pretty much know how I feel about all of it, but as far as the season on the whole went, I enjoyed it.  For me, the first season was still the best.  It was always really fast-paced and shocking.  The second season kind of dragged for me, and this one was an improvement, but it was also a little uneven and had a couple issues, mainly that the cast was getting too massive with the Originals and parents and god knows what else, and also that Bonnie is still alive.  But the biggest problems were that, first of all, everything could be done or undone with magic (too easy), and the plot twists and turns didn’t always make logical sense.  It seems like they must have gotten some new writers.  But I did feel like, in spite of those things sometimes, the last part of the season was wonderfully entertaining and engaging, and I feel like they definitely chose the right time to make Elena a vampire.  The show needs a shakeup, and I think that’ll be perfect.  I’m really, really excited for next season. Welcome to day three of our 2012 tv year in review! In case you missed the first two, they can be found here and here. There are a lot of shows on Wednesdays, so check out our thoughts on what we liked, what we didn’t and what we’re deleting forever from our DVRs. Then hit the comments with your opinions, shows we didn’t mention, all of that!

As always, SB’s (@offcolortv) comments are in blue and mine (@nicole_octv) are in purple.

Happy Endings

I mean, I don’t even know what to say about this show because I love it, and I have no complaints, except for the fact that James Wolk is not a permanent cast member. But, nothing’s perfect. I’m still sooooo impressed with how far the show has come with Elisha Cuthbert’s character Alex since the pilot. She has gone from one of the most problematic characters (in that they never seemed to know what to do with her) to one of the funniest. Consistently. Every damn week. I even love Dave, because while they still don’t totally know what to do with him, they are absolutely not above pointing that out whenever possible. And I love his too-cool-for-the-room act whenever he busts it out, which is pretty often. Requests for season 3: More Max vs. Jane fights, more Mandonna, MORE DERRICK, maybe tone down Penny just a tinge (she is awesomesauce but sometimes her character feels a tad repetitive – maybe fewer catchphrases?) and obviously the season needs to end with another wedding because the show is two for two with their season finales, so why fix what ain’t broke?

Awww, you guys!  Can you believe that Happy Endings is getting a THIRD season?  It’s our little show that could, because let’s face it–even getting a second season was defying the odds.  But it’s so good, and wonderfully generational, and FUNNY.  I laughed that damn offensive parrot as much as or more than I laughed at anything on TV all year.  And I completely agree with Nicole about Alex, and Derrick, and weddings.  Plus, I’m a total sucker for any Chicago references, particularly the Polish cleaning lady.  PANDER TO ME, SHOW!  And oh my GOD, when they said TATERS and we all had a collective heart attack … I seriously might have died of happiness for a second there.  It was one of the happiest moments of my TV blogging career, and it’s all because of Stephanie’s awesomeness.  Yay!  I can’t wait for next year–this show is totally on my appointment TV list.

Lots more after the jump:

The Year-End Wrap Up posting extravaganza continues!  For Monday shows, click here, and be sure to keep checking back all this week for our thoughts on how seasons went as a whole, what we’re going to keep watching and obsessing over, and what is getting the axe from our DVRs!  And as always–comment, comment, comment!

Glee

Oh, good lord. I am willing to admit that the two episodes that aired last week were okay. Even kind of good. But I am at the point now where I hate the show so much that it actually pains me to admit that. Because I know that given enough time (usually a week) Glee will squander all the goodwill it earns from NOT being a complete trainwreck by fucking up so hard that it reminds you all over again why you promised yourself you would STOP WATCHING THE SHOW ALREADY, GODDAMMIT!!  I will not be watching next season – they’re doing a major overhaul of some kind (per usual, Ryan Murphy is being super cagey about his plans, which to me indicates that he probably has no idea what he’s doing and will decide while yachting around the Hamptons with Gwyneth Paltrow sometime in August), and so I see this as the perfect time to make a clean break. I’m treating this week’s episode as a series finale and then I am moving on, as I imagine most of the original cast members are dying to do (to me, those summer arena tours that they do seem like forced hard labor – I imagine that they are transported around in cages). I like most of the people in the show enough that I’ll check them out in other things (Chris Colfer’s writing/producing feature film debut looks worth checking out and I will follow Jane Lynch anywhere except back to Sue Sylvester’s office). But I fear that the show has ruined Matthew Morrison for me forever. Sorry buddy. It’s really unfortunate that your debut to those of us who don’t follow Broadway had to be playing Will Schusterwurst, because dammmmnnnnnn. That shit leaves an aftertaste that won’t be easy to forget. Goodbye forever, Glee. We’ll always have those first six episodes.

You know … I really do hate this show too.  I kind of like the songs, and occasionally I’ll have a moment of character love or really admire a bit of acting and then I remember … it doesn’t belong on this show, and there are several people who are just all around too good for it (Jane Lynch, Dot Marie Jones, and Dianna Agron, to name a few–also, I’m pissed that Jane Lynch left Party Down for this, but then … how could she have known what it would become?).  So basically, I second everything Nicole has already said.  I actually may have considered continuing to watch, given the reboot factor and that Murphy seems to have completely lost interest in the show (and he’s busy enough for his involvement to be minimal), which means that maybe with new people running the show, it could theoretically improve.  Although this season has not really evidenced that.  But thankfully, Glee is cutting the cord for me by moving to Thursdays, which are already just too busy to mess with this trifling bullshit.  I confess that I’ll probably check out the first ep or two if they REALLY change it up, mostly out of morbid curiosity, but the series recording is getting deleted.  Beyond all the silly, stupid crap … I just get sick of the attempts at emotional exploitation and I’m over it.

Hey Everyone! It’s that time of year again – the end of another season of tv is upon us and SB and I are here to give you our unsolicited opinions about all of the shows we were watching (even some that we don’t regularly cover on the site). We’re covering shows based on when they aired, so today we start with Monday shows and we’ll be posting a new edition every day this week. We’re each providing our opinions to get the discussion going, and it’s up to you guys to continue the conversation in the comments. We want to hear your opinions – and feel free to comment on shows that we didn’t get a chance to mention. This is your opportunity to air grievances and/or gush about the 2011/2012 television season, so don’t be shy!

As always, SB’s thoughts are in blue (follow her on twitter @offcolortv) and my thoughts are in purple (follow me @nicole_octv).

The Voice

I just started watching The Voice this year and I’ll TOTALLY be back.  I really only got into one season of Idol (Clay and Reuben, of course), and I’m just generally not usually a fan of singing shows or reality shows where America decides stuff.  Because, let’s face it–America is stupid.  But I seriously love this show–it’s funny, America doesn’t have THAT much control over the decisions (just enough to feel included), it’s generally very positive, except when Christina is being a bitch, it moves quickly, and there’s a nice variety in the competitions.  Plus, the judges have excellent chemistry, and it’s just kind of one of those things that’s either there or it’s not–you can’t fake it and you can’t force it.  Plus, I love the Blake and Adam bromance.  I am SO IN when this show returns in the fall.

I have never seen an episode of The Voice (my only exposure to reality shows comes from my weekly fix of The Soup, and they have too much to talk about re: Big Ange and Gold Rush Alaska to get into The Voice). I do know a bit about it though – spinning chairs, bitchy Xtina, Maroon 5, Cee-Lo’s evil mastermind cat – that about covers it right? I was more aware of the show this season however, only because of Tony Lucca who I first fell in teen love with when he was on Malibu Shores with Keri Russell. He also sang the hell out of ‘Devil Town’ for Friday Night Lights, so I was rooting for him. Especially after I heard that Xtina didn’t even remember him from their Disney days and was a total cooze to him throughout. Bitch.

Tons more shows after the jump:

So you might have noticed the four epic posts wrapping up the TV mid-season break (part 1, part 2, part 3, part 4). However, it is also the end of the actual year. The software that we use for blogging around these parts is WordPress and they were super nice and gave us an infographic on some of the cool stuff that happened this year. Before I post the infographic though, I want to hand out a couple of awards.

Top post of the year: Congrats to Melissa on her Once Upon a Time post. Of course she had a little help from Prince Charming himself retweeting the post (anyone have a link?), but we’ll still give her some credit.

Top social network: Fuck Facebook. Fuck Google+. Fuck Friendster. Twitter is where it is at. If you aren’t on Twitter and you are reading this site, please get your head checked and then head over to Twitter and sign up for an account. Then leave a comment here and we will follow you. Plus you can get all of our inane babble.

Top search term: So Phil Dunphy (aka Clive Bixby) managed to pop up wedge salad as our top search term. What is more interesting though, is all of the non-top search terms. You know, things like ‘monkey rape’, ‘raw dog a beehive’, and ‘poo coming out of the ass’. Thanks for visiting, you weirdos!

Top country: After taking out Osama Bin Laden and Kim Jong Il (thank you Team America, fuck yeah), the USA comes out on top. Don’t worry America Jr, you were in second place, eh.

Top commenter: Hockeybychoice was the top commenter on the top post. But honestly, all you guys are fucking epic commenters. Seriously, this site would be a big steaming pile of shit if you guys weren’t here to comment. We are nothing without you.

But screw all this sappy crap, let’s get to the infographic. Enjoy and let me know what your favorite shit for the year was. I’d love to hear it. Read the rest of this entry »

Welcome to the fourth and final installment of OCTV’s mid-year wrap up, where Nicole and SB go over what they’ve been watching all year and take a step back to look at the seasons (or the seasons so far) as a whole.  If you missed part one, you can find it here, part two is here, and part three is here.  Gifs are generously rounded up by hockeybychoice, and as always, Nicole’s thoughts are in purple and SB’s are in blue.  Enjoy and be sure to comment!

The Vampire Diaries

I am still loving this show (even if I’m less enthralled with Damon than I used to be).  It continues to be excellent at managing a million things at once, even if sometimes that means that we don’t get to see certain people for weeks at a time (miss ya, Jeremy!).  I love love love Ripper Stefan and the entire Klaus and Rebekah story arc, and I’m intrigued by Katherine’s place in everything.  As per usual, the love story of poor, wounded Elena is the least interesting thing to me – the second a guy gets with her he turns into someone I don’t give a shit about.  She is excellent at making people boring by association.  That’s not a knock on The Dobrev because she is the opposite with Katherine, but Elena is room temperature vanilla pudding compared to Katherine’s…something exciting that they would make on Top Chef, like flaming spicy chocolate ganache, I don’t know.  Anyway, the show continues to be a thumbs way up for me, but I’ll let SB get into it since she’s OCTV’s TVD master and I know y’all want to hear from her.

Ooooh, TVD MASTER?  Well, I don’t know about that, but I have been spending a lot of time with TVD lately, as I recently wrote a Top Three Moments of Season Three (So Far) post for vampire-diaries.net, which is seriously the best fansite I’ve ever seen for anything (no exaggeration), which can be found here.

I am LOVING this season.  I had some serious issues with season two (namely, Rose and trying to cram too much in), but I think this season has been pretty great.  They slowed the pace down a bit, gave us a better idea of the general time frame of the show (two seasons equals a year), sent the kids back to high school (!!!), and turned the show’s sweetest remorseful bunny-killing vampire into a shockingly scary sidekick to a sociopath (holy god, the alliteration!).  The show is really functioning at its best this season, because there are several stories going on at once, but they’re all overlapping each other just enough.

And you know what else is pretty incredible?  That with an already large cast with a lot going on, that the show has managed to add in the Originals without it feeling like anyone is being cheated out of story time.  That takes a deft hand.  And oh GOD, you guys, the talent levels on this show–I can’t even handle it.  I mean for REAL–just think about the crying or almost crying scenes ALONE, JUST this season!  Stefan calling Elena.  Rebekah in front of the mirror.  Caroline when Tyler left angry.  Matt letting go of Vicki.  Bonnie holding Grams’ hand as she disappeared.  Anna and Pearl’s reunion.  Klaus’ Single Perfect Man Tear™?!?!?  Geez, you guys, and that is all in like nine episodes and without Sara Canning, who was a fucking all-star crier!

Anyway, I kind of took a detour there, but all of this to say that I’ve been really happy with this season and how it’s all been working together.  I’ve enjoyed the Damon and Elena slow burn, even as I feel the Stefan pain, and Caroline and Tyler are pretty much ripping my heart out.  The ghost episode was so fun, Simon Camden bled from his eyeballs (delightfully gross, and also wonderful inspiration for my Halloween zombie makeup), and I love the new Buffyication of Elena.  It feels weird to say that a season that’s already been so fab has promise, but I feel like it really does, like everything up to this, while it’s there have been payoffs all along, is really leading up to some like massive event of awesomeness.  Of course, said massive event is probably going to ultimately end up being me having a heart attack, but that’s just how I assume every season of TVD will end, from now until eternity.
