Wow – I don’t think I’ve ever been so conflicted about an episode of Pretty Little Liars before. On the one hand, parts of it were SO GREAT. And on the other hand, those parts were few and far between and most of it was SO BORING. I confess I’m not a fan of backdoor pilots in general, especially when I don’t really care about the characters getting spun off. They just feel like such a departure from the show that you’re used to watching, and often have very little to do with the ongoing narrative that you’re invested in. And given the fact that Caleb is (to me) one of the most…beige…PLL characters, and Ravenswood looks like an hour long mental nap, I was not about those parts of this episode. Which, unfortunately, took up what felt like at least 60% of the hour.
I mean, Caleb spent like ten minutes of the show riding a BUS for god’s sake. I might have been more forgiving of the show boring me half to death if this wasn’t the PLL Halloween Spectacular, the one morsel of batshit insanity that we get to tide us over until the next proper half-season starts up. Need I remind anyone of last year’s Masquerade Crazy Train of Death ft. Adam Lambert? Caleb and his hair twin trying to steal chips on a bus doesn’t really compare. Especially since we ended last season with the reveal that EZRA IS EVIL YAYAYAYAY!!! I really wanted more of THAT, and less of some girl I don’t know bumping into shit in a mansion.
