Welcome back to part two of OCTV’s mid-year wrap up, where Nicole and SB go over what they’ve been watching all year and take a step back to look at the seasons (or the seasons so far) as a whole.  If you missed part one, you can find it here.  Gifs are generously rounded up by hockeybychoice, and as always, Nicole’s thoughts are in purple and SB’s are in blue.  Enjoy and be sure to comment!

How I Met Your Mother

This show has really impressed me with it’s willingness to go places where most traditional sitcoms would be afraid to go.  The most impressive and heartbreaking example of this is last year’s storyline about the death of Marshall’s dad which can still make me tear up if I picture Alyson Hannigan’s cryface and remember Jason Segel’s strained ‘I’m not ready for this’.  The whole thing was so well done and they found a fantastic balance of humor and emotion to tell the story over the subsequent weeks.  As someone similar in age to the characters, I appreciate the fact that the show will go there and show the funny and human side of all the shit you go through in life around this age.

This year, the drama has been about Robin and her inability to have kids, and how she feels about that considering that she was always the one that said she never wanted them.  Again, I can totally relate to this.  I’ve never particularly wanted be an Olympic pole vaulter for Team Canada either, but if the option was suddenly taken away from me, I don’t know how I’d feel about it.  At this point, I appreciate this show for it’s ability to tell (mostly) good stories each week, and for making me laugh AND cry, and I don’t particularly give a shit HOW he met their goddamn mother.  I stopped caring about that a long time ago.  But as long as I feel connected to these people and the show is willing to take chances with stories and subject matter, I’ll be watching.

Yeah, you know, I read a lot of professional critcs’ opinions about this show and their increasing rage, and I’m always a little confused, like … REALLY?  It’s not that they don’t make valid points, I guess, but I just kind of feel like what they’re getting worked up about isn’t that big a deal, and I pretty much feel like if you’re still watching the show with the actual expectation of Ted finding the mother, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment every week.  And I don’t know, it just seems weird to me keep watching a show that’s going to stress you out.  But then, I’m not a professional critic, so if I don’t want to watch something … I just don’t.

Anyway, I agree with Nicole that this show has had a lot of really great acting, especially in the least year or two.  Those episodes where Marshall’s dad died were excruciating, in a good way.  I also got emotional about the Olympic pole vaulter episode, and how about Barney finding his real dad?  All awesome.

My only real issues in the past year have been Zoey (how do you actually make Jennifer Morrison, of all people, insufferable?) and Kevin.  I’m fine with Ted being single (also, I really don’t know why everyone hates Ted so much … I guess I wouldn’t say he’s my FAVORITE, but he’s fine, and he just serves such a definite purpose within the group–but I digress), but I’m not sure why we’re still keeping Barney and Robin apart at this point.  The writers really fucked it up once, and I thought things were getting back on track.  I’m okay with a short “choosing Kevin, pregnancy scare” detour, but I hope it’s short.  Obviously Lily and Marshall have their happily ever after, and Ted is working on his … is it so unreasonable to give Robin and Barney theirs, when it’s so obviously each other?

But even the prolonged agony of Robin and Barney isn’t enough to keep me away from the show.  I really like it–it’s funny, the cast has awesome chemistry, and it’s a nice half hour on a Monday.  I’m in for the long haul.

We had a ton of fun with our first MFK post yesterday in which we had a very mature, high-minded discussion with respect to the various characters on Monday night tv and the types of things we might like to do with and/or to them (click here if you missed it!).  Today, we continue the fun with Tuesday shows, and there are a few, so let’s get to it (as usual, my comments are in purple while SB’s are in blue):

Glee

Yes, Will - and now you must die.

Well, the ‘F’ part of this one is easy – his nickname even rhymes with fuck – Noah Puckerman and his weird mohawk any day of the week.  As for marriage, well, that’s when things get more difficult because almost everyone on this show is either terrible or gay.  If I was cool with a sexless marriage, I’d go for Blaine (though his incessant cheeriness might eventually prove problematic), but since I’m not, I’m going to go out on a limb and pick Burt Hummell.  Yes, Kurt’s dad. He’s cute, he’s a sweetie pie, he’s a business owner and it would make me Kurt’s (young, ahem) stepmom which I think would be fun. As for kill, I’m going to assume we can’t choose producers, head writers or creators of the show, so I’ll pick Schue.  It was a tossup between him and Sue, but honestly I’d get way more joy seeing that curly mop of hair disappear into a lake than I would with Sue, so Will it is.

Oh my GOD, Puck.  What an easy pick.  He’s the badboy of my fucking (literally) dreams.  But you know what?  This is such a big cast that I feel the need to make both girl and boy picks.  So boys first: Fuck Puck, marry Blaine (I’m good with his cheeriness and a sexless marriage as long as he never stops dancing … EVER–it’ll all be very Once More With Feeling), and kill Shue.  DEFINITELY.  Girls?  Fuck Santana (I KNOW Andy is gonna be on board), marry … oh man.  I’m gonna catch some shit for this one, but marry Holly Holiday.  I’m not kidding, you guys.  I know she’s Gwyneth, but she’s so funny and adventurous and I sort of love her.  And even though she’s Gwyneth, she’s not Gwyneth.  Not to get too existential on you.  And without any doubt in anyone’s mind, kill Rachel.  In a VERY bloody and brutal and prolonged way.

Parenthood is such a fantastic show, isn’t it?  It’s like comfort food that you don’t have to feel guilty about – like if they made mac and cheese that tasted fantastic and didn’t have any fat or calories.  That last bit sounded like a Cathy comic strip – ack!  Sorry.  How about, it’s like if they made gin that gave you all the buzz and none of the hangover (or pot with all of the fun, none of the jail).  It’s really hard to stop comparing it to Jason Katims’ other amazing show, Friday Night Lights, and while they are very different, they both share that same, hard-to-define quality – Esquire’s Sexiest Woman Alive 2010, Minka Kelly.  Kidding!  But if you watch both shows, you know what I mean.  They just make you feel good, even when you’re crying your face off.

This week’s episode was mostly perfect, but I did have an issue or two…plus a possible gaydar bait and switch?  There are so many characters on this show, and so many simultaneous storylines, so I think the best way to do these recaps is to break it down by subsection, so here we go:

What?  This show has been on for three weeks already?  And I haven’t posted about it once?  Yes, you are correct and I am sorry.  It is not at all for a lack of Parenthood love, which is easily one of my favorite new shows of the last couple of years.  I’m a diehard Friday Night Lights fan, and with that show coming to an end this year (SNIFF!!), I’m really glad that we have Jason Katims’ awesome new show to carry us through the impending loss.   I’ll be covering Parenthood from here on out, so definitely come back to discuss it with us each week.  I can’t promise it’ll always be posted on Wednesday but it’ll definitely be up by Thursday.

So, let’s get the less interesting (but still very interesting!) parts out of the way first.  Adam and Kristina’s schedule frightens me.  Jesus.  I was stressed just hearing them talk about it (no, I don’t have kids, why do you ask?).  They’ve been missing out on “couple time” because of the evil calendar in the kitchen, and now Kristina wants a Date Night (like Adam, I hate that term, but appreciate what it represents).  I spent this past Saturday babysitting my godson for this exact reason – his parents needed to get the fuck outta the house and remember that they are married adults who love each other and are not simply hired help who happen to share a house.  I get it.  And I get why Kristina was so adamant, especially after that extremely scary statistic that 80% of marriages with autistic children end in divorce.  I don’t know if that’s a real fact or a show fact, but I’d guess it’s not too far off – that is a majorly stressful situation for a couple to deal with.  It was so considerate of her friend Suze Lessing (awesome Wiccan Meghan from Felicity) to point that out.

Okay, guys–I’m a week late on this, maybe later, but it’s summer and there’s nothing else going on, so why not catch up on a little Parenthood finale, whaddaya say?  Just real quick, I promise.

Alright, we finally got some resolution on Amber and Hattie, who dyed her hair black and looks a little bit like Christina Ricci now.  Hattie wanted to be a little more like Amber, but also just wanted a change and you know, I can identify with the hair thing.  It’s an easy way to make a pretty big change, and I too am a fan of hair dye and the occasional dramatic chop off.  I haven’t gone black, because once you do … well, you know.

Anyway, Amber ran away and as a result, she and Hattie made up, Kristina and Sarah made up, no one got in trouble or even raped by the guy walking around behind the phone booth at the truck stop.  So I think that the lesson we should take away from this is that running away is good!  And it fixes all your problems!

I know I can’t start every post about this show by saying how good it is, but seriously, it’s so good!  I’m going to miss it over the summer.  And I’m impressed with how much I enjoy watching it every week.

Most everything this week centered around Zeke and Camille’s problems, which of course makes sense because it’s a huge deal that affects the family.

Adam and Sarah got most of it, because they’re the oldest and because of their living situations.  I felt really bad for Sarah, because first she found out that her dad had cheated on her mom (which she already kind of knew), but then she had to see her mom out cat-housin’.  Poor girl.

Adam, of course, was pissed at Zeke about cheating on his mom, but of course his home life is hectic enough that all the drama got semi-pushed to the background.  Well, except for Zeke wreaking havoc on their routine, not shutting up about getting a dog (and by the way, I’m totally with him–that was the most adorable fat little puppy I’ve seen on TV since last week’s Parks & Rec), and just generally not understanding Max or what that family goes through on a daily basis.  I thought it was nice that by the end, he had some understanding and was able to verbalize that to Adam.  It was a sweet moment.

I also loved when Zeke saw Camille all dressed up and ready to go out (and by the way, her hair was WEIRD), and the look on his face and just how he played it … it was all great.  Man, I fucking love some Craig T. Nelson.  Neffler the Muffler Man.  But for real, Zeke is somewhat of an unlikeable character, kind of boorish and generally insensitive, but Craig T. Nelson takes him and makes him a real person, who has his good and bad points and who makes mistakes, just like everyone else.

Alright, speaking of mistakes, Amber told Hattie about Steve, which … man, both of those girls played it so perfectly, and I actually felt bad for both of them.  Yeah, Amber totally fucked up, but I felt like she knew it and really regretted it, and it was definitely the harder choice to own up to it with Hattie rather than lie about it and keep it a secret, so I have respect for that.

What else?  Oh right, Julia.  In typical Julia fashion, she was determined to fix everything.  Mostly, I thought it was nice to see her and Joel interacting beyond just over Sydney, and to get an idea about what their relationship is like beyond that.  Although I wanted to smack Julia’s bitch face when she told him he didn’t have a say in it.  That seems like not a cool thing to say to your husband, who is just trying to help.  And for the record, I’m totally with Joel on Timmmmmmmm being shady.  Of course, Julia thinks that getting the real estate investment under control is the answer to all the problems, but she doesn’t have the full story and I kind of wonder how she’s going to take it when she finds out there are problems she can’t fix.

Crosby reacted the most strongly to Camille wanting to clear out the attic for an art studio and telling everyone to take what they wanted or it would be trashed, and became fixated on the piano.  (I still don’t know where he ended up putting it–did any of you catch that?)  I LOVED the scene where all the guys were moving the piano down the stairs because HELLO, haven’t we all been there?  That is TOTALLY one of those things that you get stuck doing with your family, and everyone can relate.  Crosby playing the piano in the back of the truck was so cute, and I love him and Jasmine (and Jabbar,I suppose it really was about the entire little family) getting closer and just being happy.  And he’s looking at places for all of them to live!  Major adorable.

What did you guys think of the episode?  Did you like it?  Have any favorite moments?  Anything in particular reaching out and grabbing you?  Comments!

Parenthood!  I missed posting last week and figured I’d just combo it up a little bit this week, which, I know, I know, is still a little late.  I had no idea that unemployment could be so exhausting!

Last week’s episode was good, especially with Crosby and Jasmine’s family.  And dude, him getting all teary-eyed at seeing the video of Jabbar being born was really sweet.  And god, that confrontation scene–so awkward and yet so awesome.  I don’t know if I can say that I actually like Zeke much as a person, but I do find him to be an entertaining character.  We he busted out the “because he’s white”, everyone’s reactions were HILARIOUS.  I especially loved, “We think he might have Tourettes.”  And similarly, Zeke taking Adam on The Roadtrip of Bad Investments was so awkward, but all of the snippets of conversation and backseat driving we got from him made me about fall off my chair laughing.  And that was, more or less, last week.  Now onto this week!

Can I just say again for a second how totally, weirdly relatable I find this show, given that I am not a parent (and, full disclosure, don’t really want to be one)?  I’m trying to figure out what I’m going to do about my photography business, and I found Sarah’s “it’s never too late” and “don’t give up on yourself” storyline really touching, but I also understood Kristina really wanting to do her thing but knowing it wasn’t really the right time and being sad about it, even though she understood it was what had to be done.  This show kills me.

Let’s just kick this shit off with a confession, shall we?  When Sarah told Adam that she hadn’t touched Ethan Hawke Baby’s pickle, it made me crave a pickle so I got up and ate one, and that is NOT a euphemism, and yet is still really weird.

Alright!  So glad we can all be honest with each other!

I can’t believe how much this show has grown on me, honestly.  I always read people on the internet saying how it makes them a little misty every week, and TOTALLY.  This week, for me, it was Adam surfing.  I don’t know what it was about that, maybe just how happy and relaxed he seemed, or how non-dad, non-oldest sibling it was of him.  Really sweet moment, and interesting insight into the character and what he does when he can do anything he wants.

And speaking of adding more dimension to characters, I LOVED the girls getting together to talk about Sarah’s date.  Kristina needs to have a glass of red more often, and I loved Julia being around to bring the conversation around to pubes, which I think maybe a younger woman’s game, this whole … pubescaping thing.  All I’m saying is … in the 80′s, there was BUSH, like serious, untamed, wild thing bush.  And that’s cool, I guess.  And then in the 2000′s, there’s shaving and trimming and landing strips and so forth.  I just am not sure where the generational line is on if you live in the jungle or mow your lawn, that’s all.  Feel free to weigh in.  I know you all will.

You know, you guys, I honestly didn’t know if this show was going to stick for me or not but it has REALLY grown on me.  I’m officially on board with all the characters, which I think is a fairly impressive feat, given how many of them there are.  And I think we’ve been over how I always think I don’t like Dax Shepherd but then I always laugh at him and ended up following him on Twitter, right?  But last night, Billy even said, “Man, this show is kind of making me like Dax Shepherd,” and I think that was a big compliment from him.  Bitchin.

Anyway, let’s start with Sarah’s story, since I lifted the title from her lines.  Y’all, I did not watch Gilmore Girls (I know), and the only thing I’ve seen Lauren Graham in is … wait for it … Bad Santa.  But I LOVE her.  She’s amazing, so damn likable and cute, and I love what an awkward weirdo she is on this show.  I’m having a really hard time picturing Maura Tierney in this role, which I know is who she replaced so I’m sorry for the cancer, MT, but I think things worked out well for the show and the viewers on this one.  Could just be me, though.

So the whole “Amber’s teacher” thing, right?  I don’t know, I get how that’s weird and it also sort of seems like … uh, it’s April and if he teaches 11th grade English, he won’t be her teacher in like two months, right?  But then I also like the idea of striking while the iron is hot and I’m kind of with Crosby on this one–there’s not a rule book.  (And speaking of that, I LOVE those two together–all the Crosby and Sarah scenes are golden.)  Plus, I just like the character.  Team Ethan Hawke Baby FTW!

Guys, again … I know I sound like a broken record but I’m really sorry about how shitty I’ve been at blogging lately.  And I really do mean it.  Still, I have to be honest and say that it’s probably going to get worse before it gets better.  This is my last week of work, which has been hectic in and of itself, but I’ve also been spending my free time here trying to sell my furniture on Craigslist.  (God, I am a shitty employee.)  And then I pretty much go straight home and get right to packing.  Or, on days when I just can’t take it anymore, I take a nap and THEN pack.  It’s an exciting life I lead.

As such, I am terribly behind not only on blogging but also just on watching TV in general, which would be sad if I weren’t dead inside from the soul-crushing experience that is moving.  Not that I’m being dramatic.  Okay, I am, but I learned it from watching LUX.  And also, no one ever loved me.
