Welcome to the fourth and final installment of OCTV’s mid-year wrap up, where Nicole and SB go over what they’ve been watching all year and take a step back to look at the seasons (or the seasons so far) as a whole.  If you missed part one, you can find it here, part two is here, and part three is here.  Gifs are generously rounded up by hockeybychoice, and as always, Nicole’s thoughts are in purple and SB’s are in blue.  Enjoy and be sure to comment!

The Vampire Diaries

I am still loving this show (even if I’m less enthralled with Damon than I used to be).  It continues to be excellent at managing a million things at once, even if sometimes that means that we don’t get to see certain people for weeks at a time (miss ya, Jeremy!).  I love love love Ripper Stefan and the entire Klaus and Rebekah story arc, and I’m intrigued by Katherine’s place in everything.  As per usual, the love story of poor, wounded Elena is the least interesting thing to me – the second a guy gets with her he turns into someone I don’t give a shit about.  She is excellent at making people boring by association.  That’s not a knock on The Dobrev because she is the opposite with Katherine, but Elena is room temperature vanilla pudding compared to Katherine’s…something exciting that they would make on Top Chef, like flaming spicy chocolate ganache, I don’t know.  Anyway, the show continues to be a thumbs way up for me, but I’ll let SB get into it since she’s OCTV’s TVD master and I know y’all want to hear from her.

Ooooh, TVD MASTER?  Well, I don’t know about that, but I have been spending a lot of time with TVD lately, as I recently wrote a Top Three Moments of Season Three (So Far) post for vampire-diaries.net, which is seriously the best fansite I’ve ever seen for anything (no exaggeration), which can be found here.

I am LOVING this season.  I had some serious issues with season two (namely, Rose and trying to cram too much in), but I think this season has been pretty great.  They slowed the pace down a bit, gave us a better idea of the general time frame of the show (two seasons equals a year), sent the kids back to high school (!!!), and turned the show’s sweetest remorseful bunny-killing vampire into a shockingly scary sidekick to a sociopath (holy god, the alliteration!).  The show is really functioning at its best this season, because there are several stories going on at once, but they’re all overlapping each other just enough.

And you know what else is pretty incredible?  That with an already large cast with a lot going on, that the show has managed to add in the Originals without it feeling like anyone is being cheated out of story time.  That takes a deft hand.  And oh GOD, you guys, the talent levels on this show–I can’t even handle it.  I mean for REAL–just think about the crying or almost crying scenes ALONE, JUST this season!  Stefan calling Elena.  Rebekah in front of the mirror.  Caroline when Tyler left angry.  Matt letting go of Vicki.  Bonnie holding Grams’ hand as she disappeared.  Anna and Pearl’s reunion.  Klaus’ Single Perfect Man Tear™?!?!?  Geez, you guys, and that is all in like nine episodes and without Sara Canning, who was a fucking all-star crier!

Anyway, I kind of took a detour there, but all of this to say that I’ve been really happy with this season and how it’s all been working together.  I’ve enjoyed the Damon and Elena slow burn, even as I feel the Stefan pain, and Caroline and Tyler are pretty much ripping my heart out.  The ghost episode was so fun, Simon Camden bled from his eyeballs (delightfully gross, and also wonderful inspiration for my Halloween zombie makeup), and I love the new Buffyication of Elena.  It feels weird to say that a season that’s already been so fab has promise, but I feel like it really does, like everything up to this, while it’s there have been payoffs all along, is really leading up to some like massive event of awesomeness.  Of course, said massive event is probably going to ultimately end up being me having a heart attack, but that’s just how I assume every season of TVD will end, from now until eternity.

Greetings Chuck fans!!! Welcome to my first ever recap of Chuck and my first ever for Off-Color TV!!! My name is Erin. I love drinking, writing about television and dropping f-bombs. So naturally I was THRILLED when SB asked me to come on board so that I could combine all three! I have a bit of a different style of recapping because I have wicked bad ADD and writing in full sentences and paragraphs makes me want to go ride bikes. I hope you guys enjoy it but if you don’t, feel free to let me know. I am such an attention whore that even bad comments make me giggle with delight. Let’s get to it shall we?

  • Previously on Chuck, our two favorite spies got married, bought the Buy More to cover their own spy company with money they got from their former nemeses the Volkoffs and Morgan wound up with the Intersect.
  • Chuck & Sarah seem to have gotten themselves stuck in a hard place where not even Casey can help them. But my God, they look so good doing it.
  • Morgan is pretty badass with the Intersect but is it horrible that within five minutes I already miss Chuck having it? I hope something happens to make me get over that. Or to get the Intersect back to Chuck.
  • Casey’s reaction when he finds out that Rush Limbaugh has been ripped off is fucking priceless. And he is the only one who gets to behave that way and get away with it.
  • How do we feel about Zoom? Husband likes it better than Flash. It just makes me miss Flash even more. And Chuck misses it too. And his sad face breaks my heart. Fuck, Chuck!! (The name of the show rhymes with my favorite word but I will do my best to keep this at a minimum. Maybe.) Read the rest of this entry »

You guys, this week has been SO much fun!  Thanks for all of your comments and Twitter pimping – you rock!  We’ve covered Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday and now we’ve reached our final destination on this week long journey of reflection and self-discovery.  Friday’s kind of quiet on tv, but there are still epic battles to be had (hello, we have to choose between Winchesters!), and we’re including some weekend tv to boot, so let’s get to the main event.  As you all know by now, my picks are in purple and SB’s are in blue:

Fringe

So, truth be told, I haven’t watched this show since around the middle of season 2 (I like it, I just fell behind and haven’t had a chance to catch up), so I’m pretty sure that there are a billion characters I don’t know, and probably 3 versions of each character that I do know, but here goes: I’d marry Peter (unless he’s dead? or evil?  he was nice and Pacey-like the last time I saw him), eff Astrid cause she’s sassy, and kill Olivia because she has the emotional depth of an automaton (at least she did, I think there are 6 different Olivias now, so one or more of them might be interesting).

Yeah, I had to stop watching this in S1 because of how much I hated Anna Torv.  So based on that and like the four or five episodes I watched, kill her, fuck Pacey, and marry the old guy.  God, is there anything better than a hilarious and eccentric old man with an accent?  No, there is not.

Chuck

Oh this post is making me feel so guilty, because it’s also been a while since I’ve seen Chuck.  The last ep I saw was the one where Chuck proposed to Sarah – I know, I know – I’m going to catch up I promise.  ANYWAY I feel perfectly comfortable making my picks regardless.  I’d marry Chuck as long he promised to stop being a whiny bitch about our relationship at all times and ESPECIALLY while we’re being attacked by bad guys – he really needs to learn a few things about timing, that guy.  I’m having a hard time figuring out who I’d eff between Captain Awesome and Sarah because they are equally hot.  Probably Sarah to be honest – the girl is pretty smokin’ and she usually has weapons strapped to her which is kinda sexy.  I’d kill Jeff because he is gross.

Awww, Chuck.  I’m a little sorry to see it come to an end, but I also sort of think it’s time.  I’m going to fuck Sarah.  This doesn’t even need an explanation if you’ve ever seen her in a girl fight.  Or strapping a weapon to her leg.  Or dancing.  She OOZES sex.  And while I thought about marrying Ellie (again, I like being taken care of), I can’t go through with it because I’m gonna marry Casey.  And even though I will never be able to follow his portrayer on Twitter again, I thankfully unfollowed in enough time that my Casey (and Jayne, from Firefly) love remained untainted, and I am in it with Casey for the long haul.  We will have a very opposites attract kind of thing going on, obviously, since I am not down with … pretty much anything he’s down with.  But he’s so BIG.  And I’m going to kill Big Mike.  Never been a fan.

Well, we are getting pretty near the end of the season and I haven’t been doing regular Chuck recaps, but tonight’s episode was pretty great so it seemed like a good time to check in on it.

There really was no movement on the villain front in this episode, but I’ll take a moment anyway to say how much I’ve enjoyed the Volkoffs this season.  Timothy Dalton is amazing–he’s hilarious, totally scary, and incredibly badass.  He may be my favorite “big bad” this show has had.  And Vivian is really well done too.  I never thought I’d be NOT annoyed at Lauren Cohan’s fake British accent, but this show has really used her to great effect and I’ve loved the slow build of how she’s turning into a villain.  Plus, she really DOES look like Timothy Dalton, no?

Chuck and Sarah continue to be adorable, obviously, but the best Sarah pairing for me is ALWAYS her dad.  I get teary EVERY SINGLE TIME.  Even though the piggy bank stuffed with hundreds was cheesy and kind of a stretch, it was still really sweet and I liked it.  But the dance, him saving the day with his speech about being a bad dad … just all of it, really.  And I LOVED the shout out to his first appearance when he called Casey “Cop Face” again.  Hee!  He TOTALLY has a cop face.

Guys!  Quickest Chuck post ever, mostly just so we can have a place to discuss, but also because not a TON happened.  Sarah is still stressed out about not having anyone to invite to the wedding and Chuck is still stressed out about finding people for her to invite.  Chuck calls up Sarah’s old Spice Girls squad, which includes Carina, who is AWESOME, and they make a very inconspicuous entrance, as you would expect.  There is a little tension over previous drama, which will happen in ANY group of girls, let alone a group of spy girls, but Sarah does concede that it’s nice to have girlfriends and in the end, asks a couple of them (the ones who DIDN’T go all traitor for Lou Diamond Phillips).

Morgan has a side plot where Carina is kind of into him again, in spite of not remembering his name, EVER, because he has a girlfriend and she can sense it.  And you guys, no sarcasm AT ALL, we all know that’s a real thing.  So I kind of enjoyed seeing it acknowledged on the show.  There were the usual wacky antics with him and Alex, but in the end it worked out because he told her he loves her, and she was adorable, and I can’t say enough how much I love that actress.  Also, her hair is fucking beautiful.

Oh.  And I dropped EVERYTHING I was doing for the one emotional Casey scene where he was talking about Kathleen.  You guys, I’m not kidding–by the time this show ends, I NEED to see a happy ending for Casey.  Either kind will do, really.  NO, I don’t mean that!  I mean an actual happily-ever-after ending, not the massage parlor kind.  Sigh.

But the main takeaway here is … this episode was awesome for all of the badass girl power, and this is exactly why I don’t think I can ever watch a Charlie’s Angels episode if that ends up happening.  This show has totally ruined me for it–how can it ever outdo this?  And Morgan’s imagination putting them essentially in Charlie’s Angels credits?  Genius.  I’m glad we’ll get to see them again, minus Baby Spice.

Alright, that’s it for me.  What did you guys think?  Favorite lines or moments?  Plot things you’d like to discuss?  Feelings on hearing Sarah Walker say pussy on primetime network TV?  Lay it all on me in the comments!

Ugh, the sickness continues, and I’m actually writing this from the couch, surrounded by Kleenex, medicine, cough drops, my cat, and a pillow on the couch … basically all the props that TV shows use to make good and sure everyone knows who’s sick.  It’s a good look for me … except totally not.  Anyway, all that to say that I’m still not on top of my game and I will likely forget stuff and overuse a phrase or two, so just bear with me and if you think of shit I forget to mention, we’ll talk about it in the comments.  Cool?

Alright, so last week we determined that there are several of us still watching this show, and I’m glad, because it’s been a good season.  Even Billy said so last night, and he’s hard to impress.  I was glad that the Volkoff story wrapped up because I feel like it had run its course, although I do wonder what this means for Linda Hamilton on the show.  Does she stay on as a permanent member of the cast?  Will she still be a spy, or just a grandma?  Or will she get some sort of dramatic death?  And that last question becomes a bigger point of concern when you consider that Alexei is still alive.

When Morgan got trapped in the laser room, did anyone else have a TOTAL Oceans 12 flashback?  God, Oceans 12 was a shitty movie, but that scene was the one totally badass scene from it and god bless Vincent Cassel, it was the first thing I thought of when I saw him in Black Swan.  Plus, he is just a weird looking dude.  Like … majorly weird.  He’d be ideal casting for an alien, or maybe like a man-sized new born baby.  Just ODD.  But he’s got moves.

Basically, the Volkoff wrap up was sort of, for me, just that–a wrap up.  All the good stuff happened in the hospital.  And listen, I know the Chuck and Sarah proposal was the biggie and yeah, I thought it was cute and fitting … and yeah, I made the instant Jim and Pam “we don’t get to hear it” connection too, but forgive my non-shipper heart for not flipping the fuck out on this one.  I mean, we knew it was going to happen, and it did, and I like it, I’m just not delirious or shocked, and I don’t have a TON of commentary on it, although we certainly can discuss it below in the comments.  Although I get the feeling that none of you all are crazy shippers and for that, I thank love you.

Guys, I am in love with Casey, still.  Maybe even moreso this season.  Alex has been a nice addition and has brought out a lot of things in Casey that I don’t think anything else could have.  Having a kid seems like a pretty life-changing experience, and so it was nice to have that running somewhat alongside Awesome and Ellie having their baby.  But the moments between Alex and Casey are always so sweet, and I just think she was amazing casting–she looks like Casey, is badass, but believably likes Morgan, and is just adorable.  And I loved the three of them walking down the hall, with Morgan telling Casey his line about liking him too or whatever.  Casey and Morgan have really been an excellent pairing and I think it’s brought a freshness to both of their characters.

And Casey giving Awesome his pep talk/ordering him to get back into the room was … well, you know.  I like when Awesome freaks out because it’s kind of unlike him, but when he does, it’s so epic a freak out.  And he was adorable taking the baby–he really looked like he didn’t know what he was doing and was worried about dropping it, which … maybe he was, but I like to think it was just good acting for a “small” moment.  Also, it’s kind of weird but the other day I was watching Knocked Up on TV, obviously in spite of Kristin Wiig and Katherine Heigl, but also because of my Freaks & Geeks crushes on Seth Rogen and Jason Segal, plus the amazingness of Leslie Mann and Paul Rudd (did I just list the entire cast?  Almost.), and I got a little emotional at the end where everyone is having fun and playing with the baby, especially the grandparents.  And well, I might’ve been on my period then but I’m not now, but it was still really sweet seeing Linda Hamilton in there and just now I realized … yes, that’s it!  I don’t have a soft spot for BABIES, I have a soft spot for GRANDPARENTS!  Whoa, that was a close one, but it all makes sense now.

And oh god, JEFFSTER.  Y’all, god bless Salt-n-Pepa for their willingness to allow Push It to be used in virtually anything.  I LOVED it, and although I knew it was going to be ridiculous, I didn’t know it was going to be that song.  HILARIOUS!  And I loved the, “Ugh, pregnant women,” and “Ooooooh, pregnant women!”  How perfect.  And Lester’s dancing, Casey’s recognition and disgust, the arrest … Oh, Jeffster.  Never change.

Alright, guys–what did everyone think?  This was a biggie for Chuck–Josh Schwartz was pimping it for a couple weeks and I’ve gotta say, I think it delivered.  Any favorite lines, moments, plot points, etc?  Anything I forgot to mention?  Other stuff you want to chat about?  And of course … what do YOU think Vincent Cassel looks like?  Take it to the comments!

Did anyone heed my advice last week about checking back in on Chuck since it has regained its former greatness?  Guys, I wouldn’t fuck you on this one.  It’s been really good, and if you gave up on it after S3, there’s no one in this world who will judge you less than I will, but it’s time to come on back now.

Jeffster had one scene, and it was really more of a Lester than a Jeff one, but it was HILARIOUS.  That’s where we got the title line, and I loved how he greeted Awesome and Ellie with, “Hello, beautiful!  [pause]  Eleanor.”  The show seems to have regained a grasp on how to use Jeffster sparingly and to maximum hilarity.

Also, I loved Chuck’s side mission of intervening on the baby name, and how Ellie totally played Chuck AND Awesome.  She’s great, and it was the perfect little Awesome/Ellie side story.

Morgan and Casey’s relationship is still my favorite, and I love how they even managed to find a board game that Casey would like (Risk–world domination, how perfect).  Plus, Morgan and Casey’s love talks were perfect.  I like how Casey is all protective dad over Alex, but he does like Morgan and just wants to make sure she’s being treated right, and him saying he loved her with building shelves … gah.  Maybe it’s just me, because my own dad isn’t a real gushy person and tends to do things like check the oil in my car and stuff like that, but I just thought it was super sweet.  And it was good that they’d had that talk, because it made the scene in the hospital that much more emotional.  Did I get a little choked up at that?  Um, you know it.

I would DIE if this show ever killed Casey.  I would have to throw him a funeral, I swear to god, and build a tiny effigy and bury in in my backyard in a shoebox or something.  Nothing weird.

Anyway, the big story was Sarah working undercover for Volkoff and all the little tests he kept giving her, and it was some fucked up shit.  I’m a little surprised at Chuck for thinking she actually turned bad, but you know that we suspend disbelief on this show, so okay.  They’re setting us up for a long wait to Sarah to get back to normal, but I’m hoping it doesn’t go on that long.  I’m such a lowest common denominator, but I sort of like the status quo.  And, in one swoop, I destroyed all my TV fan cred.  But, you know, it’s the truth.  Still, I’m glad they like to stress me out a little.

And finally, last thought, Sarah’s wig was the wiggiest wig to ever wig.

Alright, who else watched and what did you think?  Any favorite moments/lines/plot lines?  Are you more partial to the cute romantic episodes or the darker, more action-filled ones?  Anything I forgot to mention?  Other stuff?  Comments!

Can I just say that I’ve probably spent more time debating with myself about whether to actually write a post about this than I will actually spend writing about it?  Because, on the one hand, getting sick, SUPER tired, and put myself through the Life Unexpected finale tonight, which was like two hours of battle.  And not just any battle … a battle for my soul.  Like, the Life Unexpected finale wanted to meet me in Detroit and make me into its true vessel.

I so digress.

Anyway, I have to write at least a little because my thoughts on this episode of Chuck are too long for Twitter and too positive to just keep to myself.  I really liked it, you guys.  I know several of you have given up on the show and trust me when I say, I get it.  I felt like S3 was a pretty big dip in quality, but S4 has really brought it back with the Frost storyline and more of a return to form, and I would recommend giving it another shot.  And if you kind of but not really but still want to believe me, just go watch this episode on Hulu.  It’s totally worth it for the Lester plot alone.

So let’s start with that.  Lester was hilarious and so Lestery in this episode.  I loved the arranged marriage storyline here (Sidenote: one of my friends got kind of dumped this weekend because, unbeknownst to her, the guy she’d been seeing has an arranged marriage coming up in like six months.  I mean … what the FUCK, right?  But you just have to laugh at that point, because could life get any weirder sometimes?  And who DOES that?  Sidenote to the sidenote, she was not as amused as I was.  Still, all this to say … it was a well-timed episode in my life.) and how Lester’s potential bride was cool, hot, and possibly open to the possibility of Lester, even in spite of the weird Canadian Hinjew tent with Jeff playing the sitar.  I mean, that was some freaky and weird shit, and she survived it so I really thought she might last.  But then he brought out the intensely freaky weird shit, and that is Jeffster.  And you guys, I laughed my way through this entire plot.  It was good stuff.

Damn, it was a tough call between this line and, “Does anyone else want to be my boyfriend?”, which I MASSIVELY loved, and yet tonight (or last night, if you’re reading this in the morning, which you no doubt are since that’s when I’m going to schedule the post) I was playing bar trivia as I do weekly, and there was, in fact, a giant blonde she-male sitting at the bar that was the subject of much speculation.  I’m pretty sure she was a she, but it was intense, to say the least.

This week was another great episode of Chuck and I’m glad to see this season hitting its stride and maybe getting the rest of the series back on track.  Taking the intersect away from Chuck has been an interesting study in who Chuck is without it, why Sarah loves him, and what his role is independently of a supercomputerbrain.  Yup, totally a word.

Plus, Morgan and Casey are really priceless, and I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, they’re not a pair I would’ve ever picked out.  Still, each character brings out new and interesting dimensions in the other, and while Chuck probably warmed Casey up to touchy-feeliness a little bit, Chuck is largely self-centered when it comes to talks about emotion, whereas Morgan forces Casey to talk about and explore his own feelings.  And Casey has helped Morgan to access his badass side, which is nice.

Just wanted to write a quick post because although you’re reading this in the morning (at the earliest), it is night for me and I feel like sleeping tonight.  It’s kind of a rarity, but I’m going to go on ahead and embrace it.  Still, this was a fun episode of Chuck and a nice follow-up to the last very emotionally intense episode where Chuck’s mom simultaneously sold him out and saved him.

Briefly–loved the reunion of Adam Baldwin and Summer Glau (aka Jayne and River Tam), loved the quality time we got with Jeffster tonight (I miss them lately), loved Casey’s heart to heart with his daughter, and LOOOOVED Rob Riggle.  Bummer they had to definitively kill him with both a bullet and a fall from an airplane, because the Belgian waffle conversation was incredible.

But a lot of the greatness really came from Chuck and Sarah, and the nature of their relationship–his dependence on her, her protection of him, and how that’s heightened when he doesn’t have the intersect to lean on.  Plus, the action was awesome.  Combine those two elements and my adrenaline totally got pumping.  Overall, a good episode.  I feel like this season is really picking up steam.

Alright, bed time.  What did you guys think?  Any favorite moments or lines, or just thoughts in general on the episode?  Let me know in the comments!
