‘Sup gang?! So this last weekend I headed down to Austin for the first ever ATX Festival. I think I ended up being the only OCTV person there but next year that all changes. I can’t glare at y’all and telepathically bend you to my will through a computer but just imagine that’s what I’m doing. Look further on, I’m going to get into some criticisms (& one major bitch moment) because this review is about the festival, not news on specific shows (though I’ve got a little of that). But I want to be absolutely clear that the festival was absolutely worth going to. I’ll be going every year from here on out and I would highly encourage y’all to go as well.

So let’s start with why ATX Festival is different from other TV festivals. I don’t know if any of you have been to say Comic Con or Dragon Con or smaller versions of such cons or show specific cons  but they work a little different. The focus is very much from a celebrity fan and promotional perspective. Meaning that any actor panels tend to be about learning more personal stuff about the actors and show panels are about promoting new episodes. It can be a great thing but for major TV fans, there’s often the feeling that something is lacking. While they are by no means excluding these traditional fans, the atmosphere is clear that this isn’t really for people who are solely fans of an actor or press dominating conversations. It’s a chance to interact with all of the people behind a show and in fact embrace shows with another show’s cast and crew. Not only is that environment clear among the attendees, but also among the actors.

Which leads me to the great thing about ATX. The show panels are full of writers, directors, and producers. So you get the chance to not just learn spoilers but to understand why writers make specific story choices or how a director chooses to frame a scene. The actor panels as well gave attendees the chance to ask about the process and past work, not just an upcoming season. But even more enjoyable was the way panels allowed the cast and crew of shows to get excited about shows. Instead of focusing on promoting themselves, Cougar Town stars are popping in on other comedy panels and Parenthood actors geek out over Friday night Lights. There’s a very intimate, insider feel to the inaugural year. Speaking of the intimate feel of this year’s festival, the other thing the organizers have done is make it clear that this is an event for TV lovers. It’s a lot of fun and the ATX Festival should be very proud of what they’ve accomplished. Read the rest of this entry »

I love these two characters so much ya'll. & down the line, they will so end up having sex after getting wasted one night. PREDICTION.

Oh Hart of Dixie I’ve missed you. Of course, the week I finally get cable back and can watch you would be the week you choose to go on hiatus for 6 weeks. EVIL HIATUS. But why waste time mourning right? There are always gifs of shirtless or puppy-eyes Wade to cheer us up! You should also know that because of various circumstances, I have not watched the two previous episodes of HoD yet. I figure I’m probably good because this isn’t a real fast moving show but if I reference something that makes you go “huh?” that’s why. Alright enough explanations. The episode’s previouslies opened with Zoe hitting the road, let’s do the same.

Okay I lied. I have to comment a teensy bit because I sort of vaguely know that Zoe chose not to share Lavon’s secret with George (or Lemon for that matter). I think that’s really cool of Zoe. I don’t agree with cheating at all but I think that’s the kind of news that should come from the people involved or a close friend. Zoe is neither of those things to any of the people involved. Lavon and Lemon however, they’ve got some fessing up to do.

An old guy sticks something in an old box and a really nerdy little kid carries it along. Tim starts hyperventilating over a MOTY. I was going to do this whole thing about the MOTY spelling and then Lavon had to go and explain that it’s the Man of the Year award handed out by the Bluebell Owls which are like the Elks or Lions. Aka a men’s club. Thanks a lot exposition guy. But it does give us a hilarious moment from Zoe when she says “so whoo is in it?” Lavon’s not happy but I laughed. Doctor Sarcastic. Hee. That’s totally not original but I like it just as much as Vampire Barbie. Sometimes the obvious nicknames are the most entertaining.

They're so cute.

Hey guys – we were going to take the week off from Glee as a Valentine’s Day gift to ourselves, but Melissa volunteered to take it on.  Enjoy!

Have you ever listened to something, not remembered any of it and then realized your brain had died in that moment? This is how I feel when I watch Glee. Except, the weirdest thing happened. Parts of this episode achieved the expected levels of Glee suckage. But other parts were actually good? And made sense? Or even if they started out stupid, ended up kind of working? There are question marks after all of these because I’m still not sure that actually happened.

Like take the whole Joe thing. I have issues with Joe himself, which we’ll get to, but the whole ‘Christians are evil’ thing had me kind of pissed off at first. And I’m still kind of peeved over it but at the same time the show sort of did what I wanted. See, I get that a lot of Christians have this ridiculously stupid idea that homosexuality is like one of those Disney fast passes except instead of getting you closer in line to Space Mountain, it just opens up a trap door and drops you into hell. WHICH IS BULLSHIT. Not that I need to tell ya’ll that. Though I need to tell the Idaho legislature that several times through a fucking megaphone because they refused to pass a bill that wouldn’t allow Idaho employers to discriminate based on sexual orientation. I KNOW. BELIEVE ME, I KNOW.

Anyway, so I know the majority falls in the asshole complain about gay people instead of feeding the hungry or other useful stuff but when it first started I was like ‘why can’t Glee do something different?’ Why not have a kid who says ya know what, I can believe in a religion but I can also believe in treating people like human beings, with love and compassion and no discrimination? (Unless you’re stupid. Or Artie. I have no love for Artie.) I was even all worked up about it but then the Joe kid wasn’t a total ass about the whole thing. And in the end, he realized exactly what I wanted all along and serenaded Brittany and Santana anyway. This is why I’m confused ya’ll. Glee set up a stereotype and broke the stereotype in a good way in a single episode. It’s like I don’t even know what show I’m watching!

Kidding. We still had Artie to deal with and for some reason Sugar was allowed to speak. And of course Douchester’s entire existence. But enough analyzing. To the recap!

The above video has next to nothing to do with the post. I just think its fun. So I shared.

This recap has been planned to be the final Once Upon a Time recap here at OCTV for a couple weeks now. I know I’ve been frustrated with the show for a while now and it seems most of our readers have too. If you’re one of those readers who’s joined us more recently, you should know how excited I was about this show when it first started. The entire concept thrilled me and I loved the first few episodes. I was especially impressed with all the extra symbolism and easter egg bits thrown in. Then Graham died. Now, I think there were some other issues earlier but they were more easily overlooked. While I, and most of the people I know, were upset about Graham’s death, we assumed it had a purpose. It was episode seven, after all, so now Emma or some other Storybrooke resident would start growing suspicious, right? Unfortunately everyone has thus far acted like Graham’s death by heart attack at the age of 30 (or around there) is totally normal and that the mayor, who had been threatening Graham at the time, is under no suspicion. And things have simply gone downhill since then.

That brings us to tonight’s episode, focused around Beauty & the Beast. I know I said earlier that this was going to be the last recap (and it is) but I was still hoping that something would happen to kick the story into gear. Something to give me a reason to stick around.

Due to circumstances beyond my control, this is late, so I’m keeping it to more of a reaction posting than a full breakdown. Plus I have a lot of rage right now towards the men of Bluebell so I’m gonna need to breathe and move on first. AAARRRGGGHH!!!! Alright, anyway, the event of the week was the Sweetie Pie Dance (I know. Believe me, I know.) and so everything revolved around all the couples and potential couples.

Hee, Dash’s thing about playing matchmaker is kind of funny. Except the insistence on saying sweetie pie over and over. More entertaining is Lavon cracking up at Zoe not having answers. I love Lavon.

Ya’ll I hate to say this but Judson? Kind of growing on me. He’s really cute! And at the end of the day, I basically have no morals. I mean I ship slutty wedding sex with every fictional character ever and I basically just want to see all the pretty naked all the time. So for now, I kinda like Judson. Don’t hate me!

It’s a town dance, Zoe. It’s not marriage. You can say you’ll go to the dance. You’ll be there anyway.

Rose!!! I love Rose! She entertains me so much.

HOT. Best part of the episode. AGAIN...HOT. AS. HELL.

What’s up gang?! So it’s my turn to rock out one of these Glee trash-caps. Before we get started, I thought I’d give you my thoughts on Glee and how I feel about characters and such so y’all know where I’m coming from. Like most of us here at OCTV, I pretty much despise the writers, especially Ryan Murphy for so completely fucking up what could be an awesome thing. (Sidenote: Smash, which will be recapped by Dayna in another week, is everything Glee ever hoped to be and more, just fyi.) But I think I’m a little odd. See I like Rachel & Finn. I actually really like them and Quinn as well. I just hate how much the writers have assassinated their characters. But anyway. Oh also, I grew up like hardcore conservative (I had to do a whole presentation to be allowed to buy Hanson’s “Middle of Nowhere” in 7th grade kind of conservative) so I never grew up listening to Michael Jackson. Therefore I have no special affinity to the songs. This could work in my favor because I don’t have much of a frame of reference or I could just hate it all. It’ll probably be the latter.

We kick things off with several Glee kids walking down the hall and ya’ll, who killed a cat and stuck it on Kurt’s head? What the fuck? Apparently all we needed to kickoff this tribute ep was to say that the kids want to sing Michael’s songs again (remember the girls missed out back when they were allowed to be awesome on their own.) and now we’re singing. I’m not that much a fan of the first song (I think it’s “Starting Something”). [Editor's Note: Close! It's Wanna Be Starting Something] The stage part improved it a little but it just didn’t seem to fit an opening number. But I do like that Blaine can pretty much eye-fuck everyone in a room without even looking at them.

Finn wants Rachel to hurry up and answer his marriage proposal. Rachel would like to take a few or eight years to think about it and you know, grow up first. Finchel ain’t no Naley. I mean Rachel could say yes but that’s gonna be the longest fucking engagement ever.

Woohoo! Another fabulous episode of Hart of Dixie! Ya’ll know one of the things that I am loving about this show is that even though it seems to be taking forever to get Wade and Zoe together, I don’t feel like everything else is filler on the way there. It’s just awesome all around and some of the lines are great. Actually, a lot of the lines are great.

So this week featured seemingly different storylines that ended up weaving together fairly well. Lemon wanted to be a Memory Matron (I don’t remember hearing the name of the group before but Lemon’s been working on this for a while) so she had Delia Ann and her husband over to dinner with her and George. Unfortunately, George’s competitive side came out and he did the most ridiculously awesome winner’s dance after winning Pictionary. So later, Lemon keeps trying to suck up to Delia Ann (who isn’t having a bit of it) and even learns (sort of) that Delia Ann is having an affair. Lemon’s kinda freaking out, as she does, and for some reason George finally gets fed up and tells her it has to stop or he’s done. I’m not really sure how I feel about this. George has voiced his frustration before but this still felt a little too out of left field. We’ll see how things develop next week though to really judge. Lemon lost the Memory Matron title to Annabeth but I think her insider gossip will get her back on top. I’m kind of hoping Annabeth will get to keep the title too though. Maybe they can be co-matrons. I hate that all of that made sense to me. Read the rest of this entry »

This is my face every time I think something interesting might happen and am instantly disappointed.

I started watching this episode, fully prepared to be frustrated as the plot moved nowhere. Then, for most of the episode, it felt like we were getting somewhere. Emma was starting to be suspicious of Regina and working on finding out her secrets. And it seemed like we were going to get some answers in Storybrooke as well. Silly me. Everything that had been achieved was basically ripped away. Oh continuity, we hardly knew ye. So here’s how things are going to change in the recaps. Since Grimm, a supposedly procedural drama, is doing quite well at weaving mythology together, we’ll let them be the ongoing show. And for the Once Upon a Time recaps, I’m going to treat it like a procedural. Each episode will clearly have nothing to do with any of the other episodes and maybe this way, we can all enjoy them a little more. So if it seems like I’m ignoring key plot points…I am.

But ya’ll know what’s great about looking at each episode on its own, as though it has no connection with the rest of the show? It’s enjoyable. I had so much more fun with the show on the second viewing now that I’ve ignored continuity & decided to be besties with contrivance.

The Belle Motto: “I’m a belle, a southern belle, a ‘Bama belle, a Dixie belle! I got secrets, I won’t tell, y’all don’t like it, go to hell! Oh soldier, what’s your pleasure?!”

Y’all have no idea how much it warmed my heart that Hart of Dixie was back. In a week of hiatuses or disappointing episodes, this was a breath of fresh air. It was fun, poignant, and moved the story along. And while it didn’t have much in the way of Wade/Zoe moments, it did help cement Zoe into the town more. That was one of my frustrations before the break that we’d keep on with this Zoe’s going back to New York business and today was incredibly touching.

Now I’m trying a little something different and going with a quick narrative and then sharing quick observations about different moments. If you like this style, please let me know in the comments. Be aware that I will expand on some of the observations if I keep this style of recap.

The episode had two basic storylines, with an underlying theme of family. Well three story lines. Lavon’s was quickest, as he’s trying to date again but no one will date him because he told Dede he wanted to marry her. Once he proved to Dede that he wasn’t crazy, however, she agreed to date him again. Which I sort of think she did a little manipulating of her own but until Lemon sorts herself out, Dede & Lavon seem really fun.

George was trying to keep Crazy Earl (Wade’s dad) from selling his land so that a supermarket can’t be built in Bluebell, though George’s part in the story was fairly minimal. Wade however wanted his dad to sell so he’d quit bothering him for money, until he learned that Earl really does love him, in his own bizarre way. Wilson Bethel makes me all teary-eyed and achy inside when he does his puppy dog eyes.

The main focus though was in Zoe’s desire to get to know her southern family and understand her roots. Turns out her legacy is to be a belle of Bluebell, and so she set out to join the belles through a series of initiations. I found the initiations highly entertaining, especially as they perfectly fit the kinds of things Zoe wouldn’t know how to do. Plus Lemon plotting is one of my favorite things on television. The initiation also gave Lemon and Zoe a chance to have some time together and I have to say, I thought I saw the beginnings of a beautiful friendship. Ultimately, Zoe realized that she could appreciate her family without having to be a belle and Lemon took another step in realizing that she doesn’t have to become her mother.

All in all, I thought it was a good episode. There was character development and I liked that we didn’t jump right back into the love triangle/square of it all. This was refreshing and comforting all at the same time.

We got trouble. Right here in River City. What? Wrong town? But seriously ya’ll, this show is…frustrating. To put it lightly. Now in all fairness, this episode was much better than last week’s. The back story involved Snow & Charming, people we all know and love and who have this weird thing called chemistry, so it wasn’t horrible. And I love Ginny Goodwin so even though Mary Margaret was behaving like an idiot, I still enjoyed it. But if you take aside the swoony bits, (Wow, apparently swoony is a real word. Go figure.) the story we’re left with isn’t much. Cuz you know, the last time we left Snow & Charming; Charming was off to marry another girl and Snow was doing her thing in the woods. Same thing the time before that. Which would be great if it gave us a more cohesive fairy tale mythology or things moved forward in Storybrooke. Alas, while Henry says things are changing, I’m thinking change never got the memo.

So until change really makes it and by that I mean the mythology starts to matter or someone gets a clue in Storybrooke, the recaps are going to be a little different. I’m going to approach the show more like a Hart of Dixie type show. You know, the kind you watch and like but never take seriously. This way I can still gush over the characters that I love but I also don’t have to recap every single moment of the Regina/Emma pissing contest. (Can you tell I’m not looking forward to the next episode?) And before any of ya’ll are like well why watch if it keeps pissing you off (granted none of you OCTV regulars would say that but for ya’ll just visiting), here’s the thing. This should be a great show. Fairytales are rich with ideas and characters and the freedom to embellish quite a bit is even better. Plus this show has some of the best writers in the business. Sure the show keeps telling us it’s from some of the Lost guys. But you’ve also got Buffy, Battlestar Galactica, Dollhouse, and The Vampire Diaries writers on staff. Once Upon a Time should be a much better, much more suspenseful, and more creative show than it is. So my recaps might look at things differently now and show frustration, but it is only because I know how great this show could be.
