Allison complains about her life, even while soiling her expensive costume.

Greetings from the OCTV bench, as I pinch hit for Bethany.  As a lifelong fan of physical inactivity and artistic non-participation, I cannot lay claim to having the qualifications to judge the Ballet West team on their professional merits.  On the other hand, I think my day job as a high school teacher give me a unique insight into the starved attention needs and “unusual” dietary choices of this band of misfit dancers

This week, the company made the final preparations before taking the stage in front of 2,000 Mitt Romney supporters at Salt Lake City’s Capitol Theatre.  Keeping with the Mormon tradition, all of the dancers wore long, bizarre underwear.  In fairness, those may have simply been their tights. Hello and welcome to another insightful review of Breaking Pointe.

Last night’s episode, “Tempo Tantrums,” is slightly better named than the last episode, but, unfortunately, was really boring.

BORING, I SAY. The most exciting thing to happen was Adam Sklute wearing a GIGANTIC scarf while everyone else walked around in sundresses and shorts.

I think part of this problem is that most of this episode focused on Rex and Allison’s crumbling whatever-it-is-they-have. The fact that I don’t even know what to call their situation is the problem. We hear Rex say that he “loves” Allison, but part of me thinks he does not mean this in a romantic way. I mean, we’ve never seen them be physical. Sure, they flirt and he goes over to her place and cooks dinner and shit like that—which is super sweet—but I have ZERO IDEA what sort of “relationship” they have. And because I have no evidence, and this show is giving me NOTHING to work with other than hollow-sounding discussions about career v. love,  I can’t even accurately gage what’s happening here.

But I think that maybe they . . . aren’t doing whatever it was they were doing?

Also, the company moved from studio rehearsals to stage rehearsals, the dancers work with the conductor, and things generally went bazoo.

First and foremost, we need to talk about this show’s theme song. I can’t ignore the weird electric guitar riff over the classic piano music. It is just not okay. This is not Trans-Siberian Orchestra. It’s a reality show about ballet. And, okay, I understand that it’s fun to juxtapose non-classical music with ballet, but this theme music is not the song they should have chosen.

It. Is. So. Bad.

And I really wonder if there’s anyone out there who would disagree with me on that point. *looks around* I didn’t think so.

We should also note that this episode is clunkily titled “Second Cast is First Place for Losers.” Seriously. Between this title and the theme song, I really don’t know why I’m still watching this.

Hello and welcome to the second episode of Breaking Pointe, titled ”Which Life Do I Want to Lead?”, in which people talk about the same shit as the first episode, Ronnie refuses to wear a shirt, Allison can’t figure out what the frak she wants out of life, and we’re introduced to some OTHER PEOPLE.

Also, there were puppies.

Hi, my name is Bethany and I am a ballet nerd.

I danced until it was time to go to college, and I knew that I’d never be a professional (I’m 5’1″ and have bad feet). But dance, particularly ballet, is still something that I love like crazy.

And I watch basically ever dance show EVER. (If you haven’t watched Australia’s Dance Academy, it is streaming on Netflix and you should GO NOW and marathon it.) So, obviously Breaking Pointe is right up my alley.

This CW reality show chronicles the life of several professional dancers in Salt Lake City’s Ballet West, which is a mid-size company. And the first episode, “Survival of the Fittest,” introduced us to the people we’ll be following this season and taught us all about contracts. Read the rest of this entry »
