The Secret Circle. You’re pretty jumpy for a voodoo priest.

I loved this episode!  Definitely my favorite since the big Truth or Dare ep in the fall, and possibly even better than that.  Guess why?  It was FUN!!  Teenagers were doing teenagery stuff!  Sex Magik!! And possibly a huge clue about the Other Child of Blackwell? You down with OCB? Ya, you know me.  This was just a genuinely good episode that I would have found completely entertaining even if I wasn’t watching and writing about the show like it was my (unpaid) job.  Plus, there were lots of visual things that made me laugh, and you know what that means…screencap snark!

Let’s start out where the episode did.  Cassie and Diana were hanging out in Diana’s room (I am LOVING Diana suddenly, btw).  They were talking about the big dance coming up and decided to do some Craft-style magic and change the color of Diana’s dress. YES!  How long have we been asking that these guys use their powers like real teenagers would for once and do stupid frivolous shit like augment their wardrobe?  This was already a great start, but then Cassie’s DARK MAGIC (omg, I have to start counting how many times this phrase gets used in an episode because holy shit) took over and the dress burst into flames.  Way to bring the Debbie Downer to Fun Magic Time, Cas.  Diana was like, ‘oh, no probs’, but inside she was all ‘Holy Fuckballs, what is the matter with you??’, as she later told Melissa.

Maybe Cassie was just trying to warm up Diana's legs?

Meanwhile in Crazytown, Faye tousled with an old foe:

Not being able to open her locker reminded her of the fact that she can’t do anything without magic, so when Lee showed up at the school, she was very open to his suggestion that they continue working together (his sexay handsiness had nothing to do with that decision, I’m sure).  I think that Lee was going for this iconic look while he waited by his car:

Jake Ryan, tied for #1 80's boyfriend with Lloyd Dobbler.

But his all-black ensemble coupled with his black 2 fast 2 furious car was telling:

He told her he could channel Cassie’s DARK MAGIC and put it into Faye, and nobody would get hurt and nobody would know.  Sounds doable AND foolproof!

SADam was almost happy this week, smiling on several occasions and even getting into some shenanigans with Cassie at the local municipal office so that she could find out some stuff about her dad.  Curiously, most of his information has been wiped from the system (pays to have witches in high places), but they did find out that the abandoned house where they always hang out used to belong to him.  (Question – didn’t he die when he was like 18? How did he have a house already?)

SADam was just glad to be hanging out with his sextiny Cassie without that albatross named Diana around his neck.  He was downright GIDDY:

But when he asked her to go to the dance with him and she said no because she didn’t want to upset her friend (especially after ruining her favorite dress), he was sad again.  This was him at the dance:

Lurky McScowlface

He was upset that Diana was cockblocking him even though they were no longer together, so he had a little chat with her, in which he was super sensitive about her feelings after dumping her for their mutual friend:

Yeah, he was an asshole.  And he made Diana cry, so we’re mad at him now.  Meanwhile, in a classroom nearby, Faye and Lee were getting their Sex Magik on:

I had no idea that voodoo was so rapey!  Or maybe that’s just Lee being an 18 year old guy, I don’t know.  What I DO know is that they must have spent HOURS cleaning up after themselves because they made a HUGE mess.  Have you ever had to clean hardened wax before?  I have, and that was all I could think about looking at this literal hot mess:

But it was all worth it because from the looks of it, they were both enjoying themselves:

Of course, things didn’t go totally smoothly.  Pretty much right away, the members of the Circle started dropping like flies.  Everyone EXCEPT Cassie, that is.  So, here’s my question: was this a huge clue about the identity of the OCB?  If Cassie was presumably unaffected because her DARK MAGIC protected her while the rest of the group was incapacitated, that only leaves two other members of the Circle who either weren’t affected by Lee’s spell or weren’t there in the first place: Faye and Jake.  Faye could have been unaffected because she was the one getting all of the power, but she also could be the OCB.  But then, isn’t she the obvious choice for OCB?  I’m skeptical that it would be her.  Maybe it’s Jake?  It could happen.  It would put a pretty quick end to the love triangle, which makes me think it’s not him, but how hilarious would it be if it was?  Incest is so hot right now on tv – maybe the CW is embracing the trend?

Of course, the entire dance ended in flames, but at least Faye reversed the spell.  Her friends on the other hand were still a little focused on the almost dying part and they all totally meangirled her in the parking lot.  Understandable, but they were still way harsh, Tai.  You don’t send a half-crazed witch with a voodoo priest boytoy off in a fit of manic anger, is what I’m saying.

In the final scene of the ep, SADam and Cassie were in the abandoned Blackwell house making out (serious lack of physical chemistry between these two, am I right?  I don’t buy their kissing at all), when Jake walked in.  DUN dun dunnn…..  The love triangle has officially begun!  Team Jadam! (Kidding, I hate portmanteaus like Faye hates lockers, and I also hate Team Anything!, but seriously – SADam and Jake have way more chemistry than Cassie has with either one of them – just saying).

Random observations:

  • Ethan is sober and apologetic about the mess he created with Diana, but he still thinks that SADam and Cassie belong together.
  • Speaking of Ethan, he was COMICALLY bad at being helpful during the big evacuation of the dance.  There was an overly long scene of him just saying ‘quickly’, and ‘faster’ in a relatively calm voice while teenagers pushed past him to get out.

  • No sign of any other parents, and even without their dramatics, it was STILL a great episode.
  • WHERE THE HELL IS GRAN??
  • During the DARK MAGIC transfer spell, Lee used a tissue to wipe blood off of Faye’s back and then conspicuously put the tissue in his pocket.  Is he planning on cloning her, or was that just a creepy-ass spank bank accessory that he was saving for later use?
  • Melissa’s collapse in the bathroom was HILARIOUS.  Oh my god, she conked her head so hard on that countertop.  The poor girl has been through a lot – demon snakes, dead boyfriends and now this.  Time for Melissa to put a check in the win column.

So, like I said – I thought that this episode was so much fun.  It was funny, scary, action-packed…just really, really entertaining.  I particularly liked that the girls (minus Faye) started hanging out and bonding – it reminds me of the Elena/Bonnie/Caroline friendship on TVD, which is one of my favorite relationships on that show.  I think it’s important to show the significance of having close girlfriends when you’re in high school instead of just having the girls satellite the various male characters all the time.  I hope that this trend continues.  Of course, SADam needs some friends too – WHY DOESN’T HE HAVE ANY FRIENDS???

What did you think?  Any thoughts on what Faye’s spell means for the identity of the OCB?  What is up with Lee?  Are you invested in any outcome of the love triangle?  Hit the comments with thoughts, theories and anything else your heart desires!

Like you, I loved this episode for all the same reasons! It was just that good, and next week only looks better as we finally get to see what happened on that tragic night 16 years ago. We’re going back to the 90′s y’all!

One of my favorite developments was the reconnecting friendship between Diana and Melissa. Getting to know their past and how they drifted apart. Like you, I all of sudden have this strong love for Diana now. It’s weird, isn’t it? But I certainly don’t mind. And I like Adam in the show, but when he  made Diana cry in the hallway, omg, I felt so sad for her!

Also, I really loved how they tied in 7 Briar Hill, their abandoned house, to have a purpose. It’s the strongest location to harness power and it belonged to Cassie’s father. That was a nice twist! It’s also a nice Holler to the Halliwell manor in Charmed. [SPOILER AHEAD] As for how John Blackwell owned it, if they follow the history the books made for him, then it will make sense. He was immortal in the books and even existed around the time of the Witch Trials in the 1600s. [BIG SPOILER AHEAD] We’ll get to find out more about him though as he’s coming back in the 15th episode!

I’m really excited for this week’s episode though. It looks so good, and we get to uncover the mystery of 16 years ago. I can’t wait! Did I mention we’re going back to the 90′s?

Also, I actually felt the chemistry between Adam and Cassie in that final scene. I felt their chemistry in the earlier episodes of the season too, but when the romance was put in the backseat for awhile it kind of drifted. However, I felt it again! I liked how they tried recreating the almost-kiss in the Pilot too. With the same background music and the same light effect behind them. And I’ve always felt the chemistry between Cassie and Jake. But I’ve been thinking, once Adam and Jake get passed their issues, wouldn’t it be great if they had a bromance? I think that’d be cool!

Anyway, I’m rambling! Great recap by the way. Can’t wait for the next one.

This was one of my favorite episodes they’ve done, for most of the same reasons as you. It had good character moments for most everyone, and I was greatly entertained. Though I suppose that could have been the vodka I started swilling halfway through the Vampire Diaries ep that preceded this one. It’s a coping mechanism with TVD sometimes, y’all.

Anyway, I loved the episode because it contained several callbacks to things I loved in the books, like the girls getting ready together & Faye’s fondness for fire. This ep was much closer to what I wanted from the show as far as pulling material from the books, more so than any episode since the pilot. I hope that they continue going in this direction.

ETA: Like Aerilyn, I have enjoyed the chemistry between Adam & Cassie…when they’ve been given material. But the lack of scenes together in the episodes since the pilot has done a great deal of damage to that connection that I hope they’re going to work on now.

This MAY be shocking… I enjoyed this episode. I know, I know, right? But I liked it for all the reasons you said. It felt a little more TVD season 1-ish.

The thing with Faye and Lee was super weird and I’m intrigued as to why he took some of her blood on that hankey. I like a good attractive male villain though!

I agree on the SADam and Cassie chemistry. I’m not seeing it at all. In fact, it kinda feels like siblings to me. I much prefer Jake and Cassie, if I had to pick. Plus, I’d rather see Jake shirtless than poor emo Adam. Shallow? Totally.

Episode needed more Gayle. (I know it’s not the first time I’ve commented that.) I did not care about the Principal’s absence but I need Gran to come back!

I have been only kinda sorta watching this show.  My TV is over whelming me.  But I just saw a casting spoiler about Cassie’s evil dad and it makes me happy.  Because there can never be enough hot male meat on a CW show if you ask me.
