Do you know how sometimes you get to a point with a show that you don’t know why you’re watching? DLW knows what I’m talking about. Even Sarah Michelle Gellar couldn’t keep him watching The Ringer. I’ve found that place with The X Factor. I wanted it to be better than The Voice, equal to its British counterpart, or at least must see TV. It is not.
As you may know I went to NOLA this past week. After getting home I watched a lot of TV. I had an epic TV marathon Saturday and refused to get out of my pjs. Of the 8+ hours I spent staring at my flat screen exactly ZERO were wasted on The X Factor. I didn’t even watch the performances. I found out who went home and really didn’t care to see it. I don’t want that to sound like I cared who went home. I didn’t. I just couldn’t be bothered. I admit that I accidentally erased the episode before seeing Melanie or Josh’s second song. I thought it was over and I was bored. Yikes, right? I will finish out the season here though probably with a much shorter recap.
I am looking forward to The Voice as at least the judges there have a mutual respect/familial feel to their jabs and insults. The singers are good and, so far, the producers don’t shove sob stories down my throat. It’s a new and interesting concept unlike X Factor that feels like America’s Got Talent and American Idol all rolled into one. Now don’t get me wrong, The Voice might cave and do all those things I hate too. I just sincerely hope they don’t. I thought I was missing Simon Cowell, but it turns out I really wasn’t. I like L.A. Reid and think he was great most of the time. Nicole just keeps getting bullied and Paula is there, I guess.
So, here are my thoughts on the final four performances. I’m only adding the performances from their second songs. The first were pretty much all an ode to the 90s. To me that was great, who doesn’t love to hear the soundtrack to their high school years?
Marcus Canty “I’ll Make Love To You” & “Careless Whisper”
Oh, Marcus, the little engine that could. He’s had to sing for his life and rely on having the second lowest number of votes a lot. He’s not bad and I think he could have a future in the business, but he should have gone home before now. Does his mom have a job? How is she able to be there every week? Sounds like he needs to win the 5 million. He did fine on his first song and I really loved his second song. It would be a really fun dance mix song. Simon is crazy for calling it horrific and grotesque. Good on Paula for calling Simon rude.
Chris Rene “Fly” & “No One”
His first song was a hot mess of mumbled lyrics. I’m not sure who is in that crowd to chant his name. Did they bring everyone in from rehab? His second song was much better. His 30 seconds of playing the piano was actually really good. Simon says he’s the dark horse to win the whole thing. That makes me a little sad.
Melanie Amaro “Hero” & “Feeling Good”
I liked the arrangement of Hero. The change to minor was brilliant and, like Simon said, that made it her own. It’s hard to do that with a Mariah song. Her second song was a departure for her, but it wasn’t really completely outside the box. Maybe one foot outside the the box? A toe? It did sound really good and she needed to get away from the diva songs. That last note was surprising in all the right ways. L.A. told her she was the greatest female to ever grace that stage. He doesn’t have very much respect for Rihanna and anyone else that has played on a results show. Hee! Good thing Simon is a producer and can change his mind. If not Melanie would still be hiding behind an US accent in Florida.
Josh Krajcik “Come Together” & “Hallelujah”
He did a great job on both songs. I sometimes feel “Hallelujah” is over done, but he was able to change it enough that I wasn’t bored. Oh, and he plays the piano and sings better than most I’ve seen on these shows. Paula is crying and pissed that L.A. thought it wasn’t enough. She even goes so far as to say he’s the one to beat. L.A. wasn’t excited, but was he suppose to be? If he thinks Josh needs to stop looking back he needs to look in the mirror. Chris is the same way. Simon actually agrees with Paula and compliments Nicole! I know it shocked us all.
So I know I wrote a novel up top about how I’ve given up on the show, but I did really like Melanie and Josh tonight. Marcus and Chris can go home already. Predictions for the finale? Have you stopped watching? (I’m guessing so since it’s been awhile since I’ve had a comment for this show.) Feel free to get it all off your chest in the COMMENTS. I do understand if you’re not watching/reading. I’m at that point myself.
