Scrubs. I AM a pretty girl.

Hey guys, I’m still feeling a little craptastic today (although I think I WILL be returning to work tomorrow, so hopefully I’ll be a better commenter then), so if I’m not on my usual game, forgive me, and don’t take it as a lack of enthusiasm for last night’s two Scrubs episodes, which I really, thoroughly enjoyed.

Which makes me even more bummed that it’s not looking good for Scrubs.  Plus, I saw a couple of TV critics on Twitter (namely, Sepinwall) comment on how much better the show is now that JD is gone.  It really is.  I would say that I enjoyed Scrubs last night as much as I enjoyed anything last season–having Elliot around sometimes is much preferable to JD, and Drew and Denise KILL ME.  Kill.  They’re so funny.  Plus, I love everything about Drew as a character, and the insight into his past as a med student was enlightening and differentiated him nicely from previous characters.

Also, I loved the internet coming back to bite everyone in the ass, especially when Drew forgave the internet, because it’s just so something that you could really see happening in life.  The internet … not only does it love bitching, it also loves ass-biting.

Elliot giving Denise relationship advice was great, as was Denise’s idea of a sexy outfit (“free-boobin’ it”), and I actually like Lucy more as a junior Elliott than a junior JD.  And I’m glad they appear to have more or less given up on the fantasy sequences (although they did sneak one in there with horses hating people).  I realize that I’m writing about both of last night’s episodes like they were one, but … just try to go with it, okay?  It’s more fun when you just hop on the crazy train and ride.

Lucy does still bug me, though.  The AssCole stuff was kind of cute, and I did laugh a lot at the trick candles (which was more about AssCole than Lucy), but there is so much to not like about her.  Sadly, all of that escapes me right now because I can’t stop thinking about her weird hair, and how it looks like a wig and it’s too big for her head, and how no college kid, med student or otherwise, that I have ever known has had hair like that.  I feel like, if they’re putting a wig or extensions on her, they should give that up and let her have real hair.  I mean, Denise’s hair looks like good real-person hair (dress scene excluded), and Elliot’s looks like really good TV hair.  Lucy’s hair looks like someone took a Barbie doll from 1988, enlarged it, and put it on a person.  Not cute.  And I think it’s making her look old.

Also, I sort of hated that now that she’s dating AssCole she thinks that means she’s going to change him.  Sigh.  I just wanted to punch her for that, because … well, it’s stupid.  Although his list of prohibited words did make me laugh.

Oh, I forgot to mention that I love how AssCole loves old people, such as Kelso and The Golden Girls.

Okay, last thing before I give it up to you guys to comment.  I thought the story with Arthur, the concessions guy, was good and reminiscent of old Scrubs.  I especially loved Turk and Dr. Cox in Dr. Cox’s office, talking about whether it was the right call.  I don’t know if conversations like that really happen in a hospital all the time, mostly because I imagine that mostly it would be the patient’s decision whether to do the surgery or not after hearing both arguments, but I’m sure it’s still a moral dilemma that happens, and if it isn’t real it at least felt real.  And the toast to Arthur was nice.

Alright, what did you guys think?  Favorite moments, stuff I forgot about, etc?  Comment it up!

    >>I love that you mentioned Denise’s dress up hair. Um…yikes.
But the look on Drew’s face when she walked in the door…well, it made up for it. I actually squealed out loud. AH!

    >>I laughed a lot when Lucy told us that Dr. Cox was once roommates with Michael Bolton. It reminded me of good ol’ Office Space. He celebrates his entire collection.

    >>SWISH! Haha, Cole. Between that moment, and then later when he kind of called out Drew, that was about all I liked of him. I don’t need to see him grow as a character.

    >>While I also really did like the Turk and Dr. Cox deal about Art; I didn’t love the stuff where they were gunning each other the whole episode. I don’t understand why Turk is so needy all of a sudden. When did he become the girl in the TurkandJD and JD relationship? Carla doesn’t work there anymore, but it’s not like Turk is hunting around for another woman he can act like he’s married to. I do like that Denise asked him for advice, I just don’t see this need for him to have a LYLAS BFF at work.

    >>Lucy and I are never going to be friends (even though her fourth rated inspiration is Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman). It’s just one of those things. I don’t care if she and Cole are ashamed to be with one another or if they actually like each other.

    >>I liked Denise and Drew’s prank of the golf cart, but unfortunately, it also had to involve the security guards. Yuck.

    >>And recognize, I loved the flashback scenes with Drew.0 as a med school student. And later, his white coat speech about second chances was like pure, unadulterated Scrubs stuff, you know? If they want to make him the heart of MedSchool, that would be a good plan. I am so crazy about him. I guess we’d have to go back to all the SCRUBS posts to know for sure, but I’m pretty sure I called him ladies, haha, so back off. If anyone is going to get her ass kicked by Denise, it’s going to be me.

Thanks for doing the recap, SB! Hope tomorrow is a good day for you!

Wait, there were TWO episodes of Scrubs? Really. Dammit! I need to start paying more attention to this. I find it’s hard to get back into a routine after things have been off for a while (holiday times, summer, etc). I was out watching the Olympic flame burn on Tuesday, so I had to tape my Tuesday shows at a later time. Totally didn’t realize it was Scrubs x 2. Oh well.

The episode I saw (I’m guessing the second one? With the trick candles, and the “you said you were stabbed!” and AssCole’s prohibited words) was hilarious, and I’m not missing JD at all. AT ALL. Which is weird, because I really did like him and his girly moments, and all of his daydreams. Scrubs feels like a different show now, with guest spots by Dr. Cox, Turk, etc. But in a good way. It made me laugh, and that’s a good thing.

One question, SB – are you watching Better Off Ted? And if not, why?? It’s doubly hilarious, and so far it’s making me laugh twice as hard as Scrubs. Tuesdays, 8 pm is a good time for me … and I’m sure my neighbours are thinking I’m a nutball in that hour!

Seels, did you catch on my Twitter feed where I found Drew (and Denise, but I know your Drew crush) on Twitter? Go getcha some. And great call on the Office Space callback … I had totally forgotten that Dr. Cox was a Bob, and yet the whoel thing felt vaguely familiar. Nice. I wish my brain wasn’t in a sickfog, I might’ve been sharper. But probably not. :)

Kimber, kind of bummer because I thought the first one was funnier. Maybe you can catch it online, but I know the whole Canada thing makes it tough sometimes.

Okay, so Better Off Ted … no. I hate to say this, because I know everyone loves it so much, but I didn’t like it and I never thought it was funny. I gave it three or four episodes and it just never did it for me. But I know people feel that way about Community too, and I love that, so I figure it’s just a preference thing.

  • Patty

I have tried to watch Better Off Ted like three different times and just don’t get it. I am not feeling sitcoms these days. Except BBT and Cougar Town. And I was late to the party on both.

  • Kimber

SB – I totally saw your tweet about Drew and Denise on Twitter! I followed Denise, and LOL at her tweets and how dirty/profane they are. Too funny.

I’m hoping to catch the first Scrubs ep in reruns … at some point, hopefully. Because it airs only on ABC here, we can’t get it online. Dangit! I still think that American networks should let us Canucks watch their shows online. It’s silly that they don’t!

re: Better Off Ted – it’s cool that not everyone gets/loves it. I mean, no, it’s not cool because we need more viewers to save it I’m sure, but still … I have tried on about 5 different occasions to watch The Office, and The Big Bang Theory, and I just don’t get those shows. At all. Same with Community (but only tried once for that one). I think for me, Better Off Ted is rude, silly humour and I totally get it. Plus, it’s office humour, and working in an office I get that too. Doesn’t explain why I dislike The Office, but you know…

  • Nicole

So, I saw both eps and liked them both a lot. I totally love Drew (he’s so dreamy) and Denise. Love AssCole – especially the “prohibited word” scene (even though it’s totally annoying that she thinks she’s just gonna change him – annoying). I am so not feeling Lucy though. I don’t know if it’s the character, the actess or what – I just am not feeling her. The horse fantasy sequence was weaksauce too. Sorry Lucy. If the show focused on Cox, Turk, Drew, Cole and Denise I’d be happy. I loved the youtube-ish video of Cole and his homies/prep school buddies and the feelings towards “the internet”. When Drew apologized to the internet, my thoughts went right to this blog. Also, loved him ending his speech with “You better recognize”. Sigh…Drew. What’s this about him and Denise on Twitter? I totally missed that – I’m going to have to investigate. Is it the characters or the actors?

As an aside, I have to comment on the Better Off Ted situation. I think I’ve caught pretty much every episode, and for the longest time I thought it was entertaining, but I just didn’t get the utter devotion that a lot of people were expressing. Having said that (Curb shoutout!), after watching the eps that have aired since the end of December (which is like 5, due to the powerblast ABC is doing with the show) I get it now. Tuesday’s 2nd ep about the PA system was hilarious. I laughed more than I did during either of the Scrubs eps. Portia DeRossi is insanely funny, and the supporting cast is great too. Sad that there doesn’t seem to be much hope for it continuing because it really has only gotten better. I’ll be watching though until it’s gone. “It’s fajita day in the cafeteria” “Run!!! We’re all going to die!!!!!”

  • Patty

Kimber, I don’t get The Office either. Everyone said how I would LOVE it but I just don’t. Same with BOT. Maybe because it’s me that’s the mean person in the office and so I don’t see the humor in watching people be mean, because well, to me it’s not? Does that make sense? I see nothing wrong with genetically engineering peoples babies because I don’t really like babies so why not just make them better? Makes sense to me.

BBT , for me, it’s the nerd humor. I have known people like Sheldon and love him to death. And while i have dated giant computer nerds in the past…I was going to say “not even close” but really, yeah, I dated some guys that probably do that chess game thing they do with the laser lines.

  • Kimber

Nicole – aw, damn! You mean there were TWO episodes of Better Off Ted too? Shit! I really wasn’t with the program on Tuesday at all. I just recorded one of each. So I’m guessing they did a Scrubs/BOT, followed by Scrubs/BOT? That’s too bad. It does seem that ABC is burning off episodes, which makes me think it’s just not good news for either show.

The BOT I saw was the PA episode, and the whole Lem/Phil debacle, as well as the chatty security guard. For me, I love Linda, and I loved her use of the word “douche” to create “douchemobile”. She’s hilarious. And I agree, Portia is hilarious. She really makes that show, but so do the rest of the cast.

Hey, SB, yes, I saw your twitter hookup with Drew and Denise, haha, and I am following him.

I had forgotten to mention that I laughed when Denise dissed either Elliott or Lucy about Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants, hahaha.

And I am on the Ted wagon. Have a good weekend.

  • offcolortv

Just wanted to thank you guys for inspiring the good chat today. AND Seels … TOTALLY on the Sisterhood of the Traveling Pants jokes. :)
