Vampire Diaries. Quit hanging out with Rebekah, the evil blood slut!

Well, shit!  That was pretty awesome.  And if you have to have a midseason finale (which you DO, because recapping this show week in and week out is emotionally exhausting, let me tell you), this was definitely the way to do it.  We got the inevitable fucking up of one plan, and the really exciting set up of the rest of the season.

So I think I’m going to do this recap a little differently.  We all know what happened (well, more or less–you guys know I’m kind of a plot dumbass), and I could basically run through it all for you, or you could just hit play on your DVR.  So instead, I would like to break this down by characters.  We’ll have some good discussion, I’ll still drop plenty of F-bombs, and a good time will be had by all.  Let’s roll.

I’ll start with Bonnie.  She wasn’t in much of the episode, but she was shockingly tolerable in both of her scenes.  I feel like the show has possibly realized their Bonnie problem, and I say that at least partially because we know they’ve cast a mom for her.  (Incidentally, I google image searched the actress, and she looks younger than perpetual “teenager” Bianca Lawson, so I’m hoping she reads as older on screen.  But she’s definitely eye candy … not that there was ever any doubt.)  But also, in this episode, Bonnie was quality, and not quantity.  She wasn’t grating, or a buzzkill, or just being a general bitch, and best of all, she didn’t do anything actually all that necessary to the plot.

Hear me out–that sounds like a bad thing, but it’s not.  The show has, historically, relied on Bonnie as more of a plot device and less of a character.  She’s around when they need a witch to do witchy shit for story reasons.  So it was really a welcome change when she was just being Elena’s bummed out friend who was trying to not put Elena in the middle of an awkward situation between her best friend and her brother.  (Sidenote–I thought that was cool and mature of her.  Sucks that she can’t go to her BFF, but that’s also the price you pay when you date your BFF’s brother.  Just saying.)  And I loved the scene where she jumped in and stopped Damon and Tyler from killing each other.  Bonnie has really come a long way with all this.  I hope we get more character developments in the coming episodes, and I’m actually kind of optimistic that we will.

Oh, before I move on–I admit, I kind of hoped that Matt’s backup homecoming date was going to be Bonnie.  All I REALLY want is for Bonnie and Alaric to not happen.  What is the opposite of shipper?  Because goddamn motherfucking son of a BITCH, I cannot handle one more show right now with students and teachers hooking up.  It’s gross, and weird, and at this point, not even original.  I trust you, TVD, but seriously–don’t go there.

Moving on, Caroline really didn’t have a whole lot going on in this episode.  Mostly, she was annoyed with Tyler (giiiiiirl, aren’t we all?), freaking out over homecoming, and being passed out.  She broke my heart at the end when she and Tyler basically broke up, even though it was the right call–how can you be with someone that you can’t trust, even if you DO love them?  I love Caroline for being strong enough to do that, for being able to let go of someone that she cared about because she cares enough about herself.  That’s important.  I don’t know that it’s completely over for Caroline and Tyler.  I love them together, so I hope not.  But that scene at the end is SO why Caroline (and Candice Accola!) is my favorite.  I love how everything that she feels is always right on her face.  Caroline was always an open book, and I do feel like it’s intensified subtly now that she’s a vampire–like, this isn’t even something that’s been written in, at least not with dialogue.  Her face is like … PERFECT.  I don’t know if it’s Candice Accola’s conscious efforts, or good directing, or WHAT, but her character is just SO well done.

Now, even though I do support Caroline in the breakup, I still have hope that this can be salvaged.  Klaus did say that he left orders for the hybrids after he died, BUT we know that compulsion ends when the compeller dies.  However, we don’t really know how siring works, and especially with hybrids, since … these are the first ones (presumably).  So might Klaus be blowing smoke?  Possibly.  Wouldn’t be the first time.  And listen.  I hate what he’s done to Tyler.  I want sweet, devoted-to-Caroline Tyler back.  But I think that guy is still in there.  Tyler really has no choice (or very little choice) but ultimate loyalty to Klaus.  He seems to have slightly more control than if he were flat out compelled, but what’s going on isn’t entirely his fault.  I wasn’t too thrilled with his thoughtful logic about how he was never really in control of himself so now at least SOMEONE is, but then I have to remind myself that, okay, that’s addict talk.  Stefan’s been there and back (and there again, but that’s a whole other thing), so maybe Caroline can make an epic rescue mission for HER man.  And maybe it’ll even actually work, because Caroline is badass and NOT ELENA.

But I got derailed there.  Tyler had to do what was best for Klaus, and obviously spreading the word that Klaus was prepared for an attack would be to Klaus’ advantage.  But Tyler’s first thought, his immediate reaction, was to take care of Caroline.  He was looking out for her and he got her the fuck up on OUTTA there.  And yeah, the whole situation still IS super fucked up, but I DO think there’s something to be said for still prioritizing Caroline’s safety over Klaus’ bidding.  He’s not all the way gone yet.  Plus, I hope that this is a way to incorporate these two into the rest of the season and to hopefully get possibly Tyler but at LEAST Caroline involved in the takedown of Klaus.  She has a very personal stake (heh) in it now.

So now let’s talk about Rebekah.  Small detail, but I liked that she actually DID wear the red dress from the zombie cheerleader fashion show that Elena picked out for her.  It was a small but nice moment of continuity, and I like when shows do that because it shows that they care and are paying attention to their own show.  After last week and basically conducting the episode, Rebekah had a smaller role in this one.  In fact, her role was basically to be sidelined because, as is a major running theme through this show, no one can be trusted when it comes to family and loyalties and following through.  Still, Rebekah (and Claire Holt) was KILLER in this episode.

I love how much fallout from last week there was with her in a relatively small amount of screen time.  She still seemed very fragile, even in the midst of being her usual dangerous, loose canon self.  And can I say right now that I wouldn’t mind if she stayed forever?  I think she’s an awesome addition to the show.

Anyway, basically every moment of Rebekah time was like, GUTWRENCHING.  Did it or did it not tear at your heart a little bit when she said she’d never been to a high school dance and actually never really had time for high school?  (Suck it, Cullens!)  It just kind of said it all about what had been going on in her life (and, granted, most of the fun, modern, high school dance years were spent daggered in a coffin), and she seemed excited and maybe even a little nervous (also, I love that her date was supposed to be the sweetest little puppy of a boy ever–a puppy that was looking very hot tonight, I might add).  But the best part for me was how Rebekah seemed very on the verge of breaking down at any moment.  God, how many of us have been right there, when you’ve just got so much going on that it’s not even one defined thing anymore and it’s all just threatening to spill over at any second, but you’re trying to hold it together for the sake of your makeup?  It was a BEAUTIFUL scene.  And oh my GOD, Elena giving her back her mom’s necklace.  Just … after all Rebekah had just been through, I thought that was a nice gesture, and maybe Rebekah will be SLIGHTLY more forgiving when she gets undaggered.  And hopefully she’ll be able to understand why Elena had to do it.

The other Rebekah moment that just destroyed me was when she was waiting for Mikael to wake up.  I don’t know what my deal is lately, but I’ve really been enjoying daddy issues on TV lately (hello, the Evil Queen on Once Upon a Time?), and Rebekah and Mikael were fantastic.  Listen.  They didn’t have that much time but I BELIEVED all of it.  For her part, Rebekah wasn’t wrong–families are what they are because of how they interact and the choices that they make.  And when your dad has a bad temper, and hates your brother, and turns you into vampires, or whatever, that shit informs your entire world.  So for her to put that on him felt justifiable, anyway.  And you could just tell that it had been stewing for EVER.  She’d probably practiced that speech a zillion times and you could tell she was just bursting at the seems to spit it all out.  As for Mikael, he just really seemed like he hadn’t thought about it before.  Which … sometimes people do that, you know?  When he said it was never about Rebekah, I truly believed in his sincerity.  I think he just never considered how he had affected her, which I would guess probably drove her even more insane.  And I liked how they had their issues, which of course Klaus was wrapped up in, but they had their own separate family-related shit, just like we all do.  It was so, so GOOD.

And I can’t be the only one sad to see Mikael gone already, right?  I mean, goddammit, he was a BABE.  Like an actual, honest to god, sexy MAN.  Bravo, casting department.  And the VOICE.  I can’t even.  We can’t go down this road, I have a lot more to get through.  But seriously, I could go on all day.  And I loved his intensity.  I wouldn’t have necessarily thought it before this guest stint, but Sebastian Roche truly does have the perfect face for playing both scary intense AND tender.  He’s my new fave.  Now if we could all just channel our collective energy into the universe that he does NOT get cast on Ringer, because I am still unwilling to watch it, and I don’t care how hard you try by throwing hot dudes on it, Universe!  I WILL NOT EAT CAT POOP.

Where was I?  Oh right, Mikael.  So when he showed up at the Lockwood mansion and couldn’t come in, and he and Klaus were having their standoff in the doorway, it was intense.  I knew immediately that it had to be the scene that Joseph Morgan was referring to when he said that there was one scene in particular that he considered some of his best work.  In fact, he even mastered a skill that we prize very highly here–The Single Perfect Man Tear™.

Oh you're good, Klaus. But you, sir, are no Dean Winchester.

Seriously, though–he was phenomenal.  And again I’m pissed that the stupid assholes in charge of awards refuse to consider CW shows.  Fucking morons, I say.  I mean, the whole thing was … it wasn’t like an actor doing it, you know?  That shit was EMOTIONAL, like he was an Indian and Mikael had just littered on his land!  (Okay, no really, no more single tear jokes.  I just joke around when I get emotional.  I’m an emotional Chandler Bing.  Also, I had to REALLY fight the urge to post a picture of Dawson crying.  What is WRONG with me?  I need therapy to be able to properly deal with my emotions.)

What were we talking about?  Oh, right.  The standoff in the doorway.  I think that this is the point where I realize that we just need more information on the hybrids.  I assume they’re killable … well, because we did see Damon rip a heart out of one, but also because they aren’t Originals.  Klaus did acknowledge Mikael’s point that the hybrids tearing him limb to limb wouldn’t do shit, but like … what CAN they do?  And not do?  And also, if you’re an Original, are you really on the clock as to who has to break first on the “no, you come out”/”make me” debate?  I mean, there is an endless supply of food wandering through the Lockwood property at any time (and by “food”, I of course mean “partygoers dressed in period costumes”), and what else do you actually need?

That was an aside.  Where I was going was … they really acted like a father-but-not and a son who hated each other, and what was genius about it was that Mikael knew ALL the buttons to push with Klaus because he knew him SO WELL.  These family touches are just amazing, and I’ll say it again–they’re what give this show so much depth.  We all have families and we all know it’s true that shit never, EVER stops going down.

We didn’t really learn anything new about Klaus tonight, not as a character, so I’m going to bail on him in this post and wrap up on Mikael.  Again, I’m disappointed that he’s gone.  I liked his character, and I liked having him hanging over all the proceedings like a rain cloud.  Obviously now he’s gone, and the one weapon that could kill Klaus is gone (and that really was all a blaze of glory, if I may be so cliche for a moment there).  My one concern is that I already see where we’re headed as far as who is going to have to step in to eliminate Klaus, and I don’t feel like I should know what in the hell is going on at this point.  If my dumb ass knows what’s going on, it may possibly be too telegraphed.  (For the record, I don’t KNOW know what’s going to happen, but it’s speculation on my part.  Out of courtesy to people who might not be into speculation (and because I hate when Billy does it to me), I won’t do it in the post, but if anyone wants to speculate in the comments, I’ll join you there.  Please just, as always, don’t spoil anything for others and definitely don’t tell us anything that you know for sure.  There are two kinds of people in this world–people who look for their Christmas presents under their mom’s bed and people who don’t.  That’s all I’m saying.)

Similar to Klaus, we didn’t really get any new information on Damon.  We already know that he loves Elena and was protecting her, and while their scenes together, and especially the one by the fire, were pretty intimate, most of Damon’s action tonight came in the form of badass fighting.  I like this, although I confess that I still prefer shirtless dancing Damon to all other Damons.  (Shallow and proud, y’all.  Shallow and proud.)

I guess I don’t have much to say about Elena, either.  And that’s okay.  That just means that she was acting consistently with her character.  As for Katherine, we saw more of the human side of Katherine.  And sure enough, someone’s humanity fucked shit up, it’s just that no one thought it would be her.  What I do want to point out, though, is this–it’s getting harder and harder to tell Elena and Katherine apart.  I LIKE this.  I briefly thought that Mikael stabbed Elena and I was SO EXCITED.  You have no idea, like … BESIDE myself excited.  I don’t think Elena is really anyone’s favorite character, but it’s really not that.  She’s fine, you know?  It was just that … how CRAZY would it be for a show to kill off it’s central character for the fucking MIDSEASON finale of it’s third season?  That would be like … WHAAAAAAAAT!  I mean, obviously it didn’t happen, but just the idea is so awesome that I’m getting overly excited.

Anyway, it’s getting harder to tell Katherine and Elena apart because they’re both slowly moving toward that midpoint between their personalities, and I KNOW that’s intentional because Damon told Elena earlier in the episode that stabbing Rebekah was very Katherine.  And it was.  It just … needed to be done.  Elena is still Elena, so she feels guilty about it, but that also didn’t stop her.  Meanwhile, Katherine was still willing to let compelled Stefan allow Damon to kill Klaus so she could be rid of him, but she also told him the other part–that if Klaus died, Damon would also die (which may or may not be true).  That’s HUGE for Katherine–she actually gave someone a choice.  She loosened her grip on the situation and just let things happen how they were going to happen.  More than admitting that she had loved both of the boys and that shutting off her humanity was getting harder, I really felt like a moment free of manipulation and giving of free will was a HUGE development for her.

And finally … Stefan.  Oh, Stefan.  Well, needless to say, he doesn’t want his humanity back because he’s gonna feel hella guilty about all the stuff he’s been up to with Klaus.  But you definitely do get the sense (and again, it’s subtle, awesome acting choices) that he’s really only pushing it away for now.  And instead of thinking about all of the people he’s killed, and all of the people he’s hurt, and all of the loss he’s endured, he’s thinking about revenge.  (Revenge–so hot right now.)  I love this direct nemesis/one-on-one situation we’ve got set up here.  Everyone else?  PAWNS.  Sitting ducks.  Cannon fodder.  I predict a bloody second half of the season, but I think I’ll just try to not freak myself out over the hiatus and not think about it too hard.  (Except now I’m trying not to think about it and it’s all I can think about!  GODDAMMIT!)

Okay.  That’s it for me.  There’s no chance I didn’t forget SOMETHING, and there’s a decent chance I got something not quite right, so if you think of and/or notice anything, call me out in the comments!  Also, please share your favorite moments, favorite quotes, pet theories, stray observations, questions, answers, etc.  I tell you this every week like you guys don’t know how to comment, when obviously you’re awesome at it.  BUT since this is the beginning of a huge hiatus, I am going to need some comment love or this is how I’m going to end up:

All I ever wanted was for you to comment on Sarah's TVD blog!

Yeah.  I couldn’t resist after all.

I love your posts! I have onlybeen here more recently, but I am now a follower!

That said I am also happy about Bonnie (totally off topic) but she does this chin jutting thing that just pisses me off, so the less I see of her the better.

Damon ancing shirtless is THE best Damon, you’re orrect there.
This is my 1st post, so hello!

  • Qqq

Caroline doesn’t love Tyler. I don’t know where you’re getting that from. Tyler has no one, except stupid Klaus.

  • @Sim1TO

This episode was so phenomenally layered that I had to watch it twice just to pick up on the subtle things/clues!  I love it.

My most favourite thing of this whole episode is that Stefan is once again back in the hero position, but no one knows.  He’s now the Dark Knight charcter who will fight against evil while being reviled amongst the people he’s trying to save.  I also dig the fact that he’s tallied his loss and has decided to give Klaus a big, fat “fuck it”.

My only question is: did Katharine steal the coffins and lead Stefan to their whereabouts? or did she put the idea in Stefan’s head when she said she needed him to get mad? (Which, how awesome was that whole reveal?!) or did Stefan just decide to go BACK to Mystic Falls, steal the coffins and then hide them in a beautiful, abandoned great room?

I guess it isn’t an “only question”.

Two months of speculations and withdrawls start now!

I second, “I love your posts!”.  Rebekah – so good.  She’s like that shelter dog you want to take home because you feel so bad for them. They are so pretty and you want to give them a better life.  But you are slightly scared because you don’t want their past to ruin your house. I would love it if they kept her forever as well.

    January 5th, hurry up, dammit!

May I just say that’s a brilliant description? That’s -exactly- how I feel about Rebekkah. I want to give her a hug but am afraid I’ll get bitten.

Good review too. It sounds more or less like I feel after watching this. So many things happening. So many things that genuinely shocked me. I was afraid Rebekkah was going down but was completely blind-sided by that dagger. I never for a moment expected Michael to die already. It’ll be a hard wait for January, though perhaps the hiatus will improve my grades.

I admit for once I knew right away it was Katherine and not Elena. There was something about her face and the curly hair. It did take away from the whole stabbing scene a bit.

I don’t know why Damon didn’t kill Klaus right away. You can’t tell me he wouldn’t be able to hit him in the heart on his first try. I understand that would have screwed up the deliciousness sure to come next year, but still, I don’t buy it.

Love Katherine’s plan to steal the other Originals. You know that was her plan and not Stefan’s. She’s a badass and I’m glad she’s back.

Rebekah was great this episode and, like you, I wouldn’t mind having her around for a good long while. I’m not sure how mad she’ll be once the unstake her. Will she go back to Klaus now that her family is kidnapped?

    Can’t wait for January 5th!!

This episode was fantastic. I’m in super love with beer pong playing Klaus. “I’m on the brink of victory!” Nailed it!
Also, Caroline’s rant about dancing with the stars was amazing.

  • Bethany E. Larson

OH HOLY YES to beer pong playing Klaus.

  • Bethany E. Larson

There is something seriously wrong with me because the entire episode I was sweating bullets that they were actually going to kill Klaus. I LOVE him. I have no idea what I’ll do with myself when he’s eventually gone. (Although, on this show, is anyone really ever gone?) And Joseph Morgan with the crying and the rage and the uncertainty of his plan. Oh boy do I like him. (And yes, I will be seeing Immortals this weekend.)

Anyway, I am SO WITH YOU about killing off Elena in the mid-season of Season Three. When that stabbing happened I was a little terrified, but then slowly like “YeeeeeEEEEEEEEES” until I was really excited about that plot development. Kind of like the Season Five finale of Buffy (although, I cried a lot during that one). And then it ended up being Katherine. Dammit.

And I def need to go back and re-watch the Caroline/Tyler scene, because I was SO DISTRACTED by the fact that she and I have the same lamp that I had zero idea what was happening in that scene.

    Great recap SB! UNTIL JANUARY!

  • http://onlymystory.wordpress.com/ Melissa

Um, pretty sure she’s getting that from season 2 & 3. Caroline’s loved Tyler as a friend and more and she spends a lot of her time looking out for him and telling him she cares. The show has spent the better part of 2 seasons building up love between Caroline and Tyler. But maybe I only notice that because I’ve actually watched the show.

That shit was EMOTIONAL, like he was an Indian and Mikael had just littered on his land!

That made me LOL. I tend to get jokey jokey when I’m emotional too, so that whole paragraph? Sympathized!

Also, is it weird that my eyes TOTES just watered reading about how Mikael knew just what buttons of Klaus’ to push? That part was really heartwrenching. I don’t care that Klaus is the bad guy and he wants to make a hybrid army. Whatever. Over the past few weeks, he has slowly been growing on me, and now he’s latched on like a baby monkey to its mama. I WISH I KNEW HOW TO QUIT YOU, KLAUS! I love any sort of character development, and that little bit, that they’ve been hinting at over the first 8 episodes of this season, I think, hit its peak right there last night. I too am a sucker for daddy issues and emotional abuse (that sounds REALLY bad, but I swear, just in TV-land. I cannot abide that shit in real life. Ever.), so I really just wanted to cuddle Klaus. I motherfucking CHEERED when he stuck that weird recorder/stake into his daddy and that fucker buuurrrrnnneeeddd. That Single Perfect Man Tear™ was incredible. You can’t hear it, but I am applauding Joseph Morgan right now, and have been for the past 16 hours. Favorite upsetting moment of the season, for sure.

I looked under the bed for gifts!! proud of it. but, If we are speculating I’m thinking we are looking toward the rest of the originals? What are you thinking?

  • Anonymous

I was really excited when I thought Mikael stabbed Elena too. Partially because what an AWESOME plot twist to do mid-season. But mostly because Elena is rapidly falling down my list of favorite characters. In fact, she’s barely hovering above Tyler and Bonnie.

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

Since ours is up over at SBH, I’m just gonna follow your lead & react to your cues.

“Bonnie Problem” — ROFL! Yes. A sparse Bonnie whose shutting up and doing what she’s told is the best Bonnie to have. Also, totes agree on the casting bit. Momma Bennett chick looks both barely legal & minimally colored. Just how TVD likes their witches. *shakes head*
Caroline wins all the awesome awards for her over dramatic behavior all episode. I heart her so fucking hard. That said, I *gulp* kinda sided with Tyler in that last scene. Trust is an issue, but she didn’t trust him either. Miles to go. Miles to go.

I admittedly skimmed your Rebekah stuff, just like I did on the episode. Not feeling her. Never really have.

Mikael… Eh. Too many Original cooks in the fire. I won’t miss him.

NOW: Perfect picture caption is PERFECT. DEARS cannot be beaten. Ever. But JoMo did his very very best. Valiant effort indeed. And I was moved. Not to tears, but still I felt sympathy for Klaus for the first time ever, so there is an accomplishment in itself.

And then this: “I love this direct nemesis/one-on-one situation we’ve got set up here.  Everyone else?  PAWNS.  Sitting ducks.  Cannon fodder.” —  Word. And as far as casualties – bring it on. This is Mystic Falls, I was actually SHOCKED at the amount of warm bodies and killing machines in play last night and we didn’t get a SINGLE dead corpse until Mikael (staked Originals don’t count) at the end. Trust me, ‘Someone Just Died’ is a #VDBingo square. NOT one death until then.

Can we start the bloggers hiatus party yet? Too soon?

‘Oh you’re good, Klaus. But you, sir, are no Dean Winchester.’
LOL my exact thoughts. That’s not to say Joseph Morgan didn’t nail it on his own right, He was awesome. I’ve been saying it from the start, Klaus’ whole plan is driven by his OWN humanity…even though, i don’t think he knows it. So to see him cry from thoughts of being, basically, being alone…it crushed my soul a little. It hit me right where it hurts, or crushes, it’s currently now taken residence next to spot(s) that have been crushed whenever we are reminded that Dean Winchester’s greatest fear/or personal feeling, is that he is nothing and everyone will leave him or has left him and it’s all his fault…and oh god, I’m going to cry in the corner for a few and come back. Emmh…ok i’m better, I think. last thought on Klaus for now… *I 3rd,4th,5th etc, that head nod to him playing beer pong…damn.*
And damnit…I just got over losing Sebastian Roche on SPN, now this. Sebastian was awesome while we had him at least. I love watching those (i know, i know…nerd) convention videos with him on youtube.
Dude….Damon has got to do something with his hair…i’m thinking season 1 style….it distracts me and I have to re-watch many scenes. But Damon was great too, I love that he has picked up the heart ripping as well. I loved Damon saying ‘NO’ to all the people he doesn’t trust and Elena ‘YES’ to Damon so blindly. I know it has been going this way, or is this way forever…but I like seeing it…much like the bed scene last week.
Stefan and Damon…love this story line of highlighting their brotherhood more…I love that at the beginning of the episode Stefan said “if any ones humanity will get in the way…you can bet it won’t be mine” (or something close to that)…then it was him in the end. I mean you could have called it from that line, but I still loved it.
Katherine playing Elena, I knew right away, I’m not sure how bc I want to say they look a bit different, but they’re the same person, so idk. Katherine was still awesome though…as usual.
Oh yes…Rebekah and Mikael were 100% great. I’m with you, everything felt real, even when Mikael asks if his daughter went to the dance, it felt genuine. I hope when they take the dagger out she forgives Elena. Bc as of now, Klaus still think Rebekah is on his side. Would love to have her around for a long time.
Caroline and Tyler…break my heart…so sad. One thing I want to speculate, well I don’t but have to consider, my friend pointed out, ‘if Hybrids are so horrible and must be rid of…how is Tyler going to be on the show once Klaus is gone?’ Makes me worry.
    ok….that’s all for me…
oh wait……..’I'm here hanging streamers and have glitter all over my hands’ I don’t know why but I laughed for 1/2 an hour
    ok….done, i swear

  • mary

Shit…one more. I couldn’t agree more about the BS that is of the CW shows not ever being up for some real awards. There are some very very very talented actors/actresses on these CW shows. To bad we can’t do anything

  • http://chevyscreations.weebly.com/ Anieta

    Very entertaining review. Thank you.

Katherine is awesome for having the follow up plan when everything else failed. I’m very much looking forward to what is going to happen next. TVD rocks.

And indeed: Oh you’re good, Klaus. But you, sir, are no Dean Winchester. I agree. When Dean is sad, we get the OPT.

  • http://twitter.com/LacySOS Phyllis Lacy

Klaus cried. Yeah, I felt it.

    Love Caroline always.

    Rebekah is awesome, a keeper!

Didn’t expect Mikeal to go so soon but I”m okay with that.

Stefan and Kat finally together.  YaY!  GAME ON!

  • Lemonade

For once, I don’t have too much to say, because I’m not really sure how to react to this episode.

But I will say that I completely agree with you on Tyler and Caroline.  I want “sweet, devoted-to-Caroline Tyler back” too.  Though major props to Michael Trevino for pulling off the subtle changes in his character each step of the way.  I have no doubt that he means what he said about Caroline, and that he vervained her to protect her.  And I loved the way he said, “I’m sorry I stabbed you,” it shows the sweet, funny Tyler is still in there.  Plus, I had to laugh at their first scene together because all I could think was, “Even bloodthirsty, hybrid-Tyler is willing to use a glitter gun for Caroline.  That’s love.”  So it made it that much funnier when Tyler pointed this out at the end.

Here’s my question though:  If a regular vampire automatically dies just from daggering an Original (a rule I had forgotten about), why wouldn’t Damon have died if he had successfully killed Klaus with Mikael’s weapon?  I thought Stefan and Katherine were only worried about Damon being killed by the hybrid army, so unless I’m missing something, why was this weapon okay for Damon to use and not the dagger?  I wouldn’t put it past Mikael to fail to mention something like that, but you would think Damon or Elena would have worried about that.

  • stephanie snider

HAAAAHAA  “you are no Dean Winchester!!” love it!!!! allthough to see klaus cry was kinda cool to know that he has feelings!! yah know!!! anywho am i the  only one going to see immortals today!! yum cant wait … sorry off subject a little i truely agree WITH THE I SO JUST THOUGHT SHE KILLED ELENA PART!!! I WAS LIKE A TEENAGE GIDDY SCHOOL GIRL .. THAN A PART OF ME DIED A LIL WHEN I FOUND OUT IT WAS KATHERINE!  lol

Actually the review itself said just the opposite of what your problematic statement implies. The reviwer wants a Bonnie to be her own person instead of a plot device who is solely around to do the bidding of the vampires.

As for your statement itself, I’ll just say that privileged individuals are always the one’s who want people of colour to sit in the background and do what they’re told. But dear this is not a couple of hundred years ago so maybe instead of wanting a woman, who deserves to be her own person, to allow others to dictate her person, maybe you should be thinking about what’s wrong feeling the need to shut her up in the first place.

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

I understood what SB was saying in her review, but unlike her – I gave up on Bonnie being a vialble character that I will ever be able to care about a long time ago. That’s MY Bonnie problem.

How you can turn what I said around as something racist… This shows casting department is who should be put up against that accusation. This is a MUCH talked about situation in this fandom, and I supposed it was niave of me to comment on a personal friend of mine’s blog and hope that her readers would be aware of that. I promise you this reviewer understood my comment in the matter it was intended.

One of my main issues with Bonnie, and indeed ALL of the people of color (who coincidentally are – surprise! – all witches) who have been on this show, is that they are very much margonalized into being plot devices – every time we get an intersting witch, she’s barely developed then killed. Bonnie herself I just don’t like as a character. Probably never will. And it has nothing to do with the color of her skin. So I have no remorse AT ALL about wanting to “shut her up”.

  • Nicole

I happen to not hate Bonnie, but I totally support your point.  There IS a problem on the show with people of color automatically equaling witches, and it’s been an issue for a while.  And SEPARATE from that, Bonnie is someone that lots of people don’t like, primarily because she’s underdeveloped as a character compared to her friends.  She often lectures other people that we like, for a while there she was actively working against people that we like, and without a more rounded character arc, it’s hard to see her as anything other than a buzzkill sometimes.  I guarantee that the vast majority of those who dislike Bonnie don’t feel that way because she’s black.  It’s because we aren’t given enough to balance out her more annoying tendencies.

And to address @Nat, Cinjudes is definitely NOT racist, just for the record, but she’s a HUGE homophobe (kidding – she isn’t, this is me using humor to diffuse an uncomfortable situation – SB uses it to avoid emotions, I use it to avoid tension).

So, anyway…Klaus!  How hot is Klaus, amirite?

  • Em

I have never watched SPN (mostly because I never liked Dean on GG), but have read MANY times about Dean Winchester’s perfect tears on this site.  So, I just looked it up on youtube.  You guys are 100% correct!  Even without knowing the who/why of the crying scenes that I just saw, I have to say that they are AMAZING!

  • Em

It never occurred to me when the show was on, but you are absolutely right.  Why didn’t anyone worry about Damon dying when he stabbed Klaus?  If Mikael knew what would happen and shared it with Damon, I wish they would have showed it…

  • http://onlymystory.wordpress.com/ Melissa

There’s a few of us who have the theory that the whole vampires can’t wield the daggers/stake is a lie created by the Original family. Humans don’t tend to know about vampires all that much but if any vampire could kill an Original, there would be this constant power struggle. So I think that like the sun & moon curse, the no demon can wield it thing is just a lie that’s been spread by the Originals themselves to keep threats at a minimum.

  • Em

Rebekah is fast becoming another favorite of mine.  Can we add her to the cast, please.  I think that there could be so much material there.  I missed Jeremy this week, but realize that he couldn’t have added to the plot much.

I appreciated that Bonnie was a better character than better in both of her scenes, but I really wish that she would admit that it’s harsh of her to be mad at Jeremy about having feelings for a murdered girlfriend.  Especially now that we know that only one year during the past two seasons.  Anna just died basically a couple of seasons ago.  I thought it was harsh last week when she compared Anna to Vicki.  Sure Vicki is Matt’s sister, but I am positive that Jeremy would have had no problem letting Anna go if she had hit him in the head with a hammer and had plans to “off” Elena.  Anyway, that is just my 2 cents.

I appreciated what Tyler was trying to do when he drugged Caroline, but she did have some good points in there.  I didn’t understand how being sired to someone is more freeing than turning into a wolf once a month, but whatever.  I did love the glitter gun and his line, “if I’m sired to anyone, it’s you.”  Tyler is still there and he still cares about her, he’s just different.  I think that Michael Trevino has done an excellent job with this and I don’t think it’s the last that we’ll see of these two together.

I, for one, thought Elena was acted strange, but I chalked her reminding me of Katherine to what Damon had said earlier.  It was a smart plan to use Katherine instead of Elena and I enjoyed being surprised.

I was shocked to see the back story with Stefan and Kat.  Awesome episode and recap!

  • Lemonade

Oh I wouldn’t be surprised if it was a lie, but even so, Damon doesn’t know that yet.  So it doesn’t explain why Damon or Elena didn’t worry about it.  Of course they both knew there’d be some risk with their plan in general, and it’s not the first time Damon was willing to die trying to take down the enemy.  But you’d think they would’ve checked to make sure using the stake wouldn’t guarantee Damon’s death first.  Why risk it when you could just have a ring-wearing Alaric (or Jeremy for that matter) do the actual staking part (with Damon holding Klaus down or Bonnie doing something witchy)?

This show is usually so good with the details that I’m just surprised there wasn’t even a small comment to explain it away, which is why I wondered if I had missed something.

Yay!  Thanks, Lady L!  I’m glad you’re hanging out and commenting.  We love new friends!

And I know EXACTLY the chin jutting thing you’re talking about.

  • Anonymous

I hadn’t even though about how Katherine factored into the coffin stealing.  I mean, I know she told Stefan to get mad, but I didn’t really consider whether that was to execute her plan or to make his own.  Interesting.

  • Anonymous

Hopefully it helps my grades too. :)

  • Anonymous

I feel like I SHOULD’VE known, but there was so much going on and I was concentrating so hard on keeping the plot straight that I missed it completely.

  • Anonymous

Thanks for understanding, Christina.  I’m glad I’m not the only one who can’t handle emotions, and also, who likes TV ONLY daddy issues.  I guess it just makes for good TV, because hello, SUPERNATURAL.

  • Anonymous

Alright, since it was requested, here’s my speculation:

I think the Original mother/witch, Esther, is coming back.  That necklace didn’t reform itself for nothing.  And I also am wondering if maybe Rebekah won’t be somehow able to choose between being a vampire and a witch, since the necklace is back in her possession.  But I do think that witchiness and/or the necklace are going to be the weapon of choice in the next half.  I mean, what else can it be?

It is really NOT too soon to start the bloggers’ hiatus party.  What shall we do?

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

Thanks, Nic – I didn’t think my words were *that* misunderstood – and you explained my Bonnie Problem to a tee. Much more elequintly than I ever could.

Shhhhhh. My hate for TehGay is private. I especially hate Max Blum, NPH & Britin is defintely NOT one of my all time OTP. I mean, as if! LOL

Klaus was pretty fucking smokin’, BUT he still reminds me a bit to much of my ex-hubs for me to get all Elijah level wibbly about him – but he’s def growing on me. ;-)

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

Ya’ll can come over & we can slumber it at The SBH. We can hide all of Damon’s fancy decorative soaps, drink all the liquor & read Stefan’s old diaries.

Damn. I was totally joking around but how fucking awesome would that night be? Our crew, in THAT house… Fucking brilliant.

I actually saw a post on tumblr that was discussing the above comment and I wouldn’t be surprised if Nat linked through from there, but just to let everyone in on the full scope of the discussion, here’s a link to the post:

    http://magalimoon.tumblr.com/post/12687315596/a-sparse-bonnie-whos-shutting-up-and-doing-what

I do think that the person writing it makes a valid point, and passionately defends it, and has a real point about Bonnie.  I don’t endorse the idea that Cindy is a racist or had any sort of racial thoughts in mind when made the comment–I do 100%, absolutely and completely feel like that’s an opinion unique to the character of Bonnie.  And I don’t think that disliking and dismissing one character is the equivalent of oppressing women in general or women of color.  It’s not like we’ve never, as a group, hated a character before–I know I especially was REALLY hard on Rose, a character that I didn’t think added shit to the story and mostly just took up screen time.  I can see where someone who stumbled in on this may take offense, especially depending on their own background or perspective, when someone doesn’t like THE ONLY black character on a show and wants her to shut up, but in reality, this is a problem with the writing.  Why is Bonnie the only ethnic character?  Why do ARE all the black people witches (a much more troubling question, IMO, than why all the witches are black), and why do the black people/witches always get killed quickly, before being developed as characters?  It’s definitely weird, and I know it’s a commonly discussed question in fandom that so far has no real answers.  And I think it’s a problem that can be discussed entirely separately from whether or not we like Bonnie.

Race is always SUCH a sensitive issue.  It’s sensitive for black people who have felt discriminated against and who are very close to the issue, and it’s sensitive for white people and their white guilt.  I’m glad that we can have this conversation on a stupid blog about TV, because that’s a good thing that both TV and the internet can do for us–it can make us more aware of each other and more compassionate toward each other.

But at the same time, I do think it’s a problem to say that everyone has to like the only black character because she’s black.  Bonnie isn’t a good character, and it has nothing to do with her color.  It’s because the writers have given her no background, no family (aside from her grandma, who was also undeveloped and quickly killed), very fuzzy motivations, and few personality characteristics.  When she’s on screen, as Nicole said, she’s usually lecturing, preaching, and resisting plans.  I do think that the writers are working on fixing this problem, and I hope that they do, because S1 Bonnie with the floating feathers was fantastic, and I like when she and Elena and Caroline are BFFs, and there’s no reason why she shouldn’t have a personality.  But as she’s written now, I can’t really blame people for not liking her.

I guess all of this is to say that I think that if there’s a race issue at play here, and there may be (and I really DON’T want to indicate that I think it’s intentional–you’re right, sometimes people of privilege, aka white people, can just kind of overlook it or not even think about it because it’s not a part of our lives that we have to really deal with), I think it’s on the part of the show, and not on the part of the audience and their reactions.  I think that some anger is okay, and it’s definitely okay to express it, I just hope it isn’t misdirected.

And of course, these discussions are always welcome.  Even when someone (or many someones) is annoyed by a fictional character and would prefer if they sit down and shut up, we never feel that way about actual people around here.  All opinions and experiences are valid, and encouraged.  I’m glad that this is a place where respectful conversations happen–that makes me really happy.  And of course you can disagree with me, or with this, or with commenters.  I don’t think that Nat or the person whose tumblr I linked above were in any way disrespectful–quite the opposite, actually.  And to Nat especially, I want to thank you for bringing the discussion here, so that everyone has a chance to pitch in and Cindy had (and has) a chance to defend her point.

I know that things get heated with regards to race, so please just be mindful in maintaining a level of respect, and you guys are free to debate and discuss as long as you like.

It’s my understanding that using a dagger to kill an Original would kill a regular vampire because that was worked into the magic that allows it to alchemically bond with the ash from the white oak.  The stake had no such spellwork on it, so using the stake on Klaus wouldn’t harm Damon.

  • Lemonade

Okay, that makes sense.  I had forgotten the dagger rule until it came up in the episode, and I certainly didn’t remember any of that spell stuff, so I guess I didn’t pay enough attention during the dagger’s early episodes! :)  Thanks Dayna!

  • Anonymous

Do you think it would be too obvious to hide the fancy soaps in a soapdish, among the other soaps?

Oh my god, the good night’s sleep I’d get in Damon’s massive fucking bed, NOT staying up all night to write a recap?  I might have to be forcibly removed.

  • Anonymous

Yeah, I’m worried for Tyler too.  No me gusta, my friends.  NO ME GUSTA.

  • Anonymous

You guys are KILLING me with the Dean pics and videos.  I accidentally clicked and watched the video of Dean crying with no warning … cruel and unusual.  Gah.

  • Anonymous

I’m glad you’re here, Dayna.  I can’t keep this shit straight.

  • Nicole

Drunken dancing.  All through the house.  MANDATORY.

  • Nicole

EX-husband, huh?  So…he’s single is what you’re saying.  He’s single and he looks like Klaus.  Interesting.  ;)

  • http://salvatoreboardinghouse.wordpress.com/ cinjudes

No, he’s been married almost 12 years, same as I have. I’m older than I come across on the internet. Got married in ’96, daughter in ’98, we got divorced & both remarried to our current spouses by the end of ’99. And he was never as hot as JoMo. They have the same hair, and very similar features, especially lips & forhead & just Klaus’ evilness reminds me of him VERY much. It really freaked me out last year but I’ve come to deal with it as time has gone on. My daughter also has some of the looks and it’s kinda spooky.

But were he single I’d hand the bastard over. I promise you that. LOL

  • TVD*fan

that only applies to the daggers, which are enchanted to kill the vampire who uses it. however Damon was going to use the white oak stake to kill klaus, which is NOT enchanted
