Glee. The First Time.

Is it just me, or is Glee’s episodes getting more and more cheesy every week? This is extremely disappointing seeing as how I absolutely love Glee. Seriously though, I don’t know if the actors are getting worse at acting, the script is just horribly written, or a combination of the two. I found myself chuckling a few times throughout the show because I just couldn’t take it seriously, but at the same time I was disappointed in all the wrong things they seemed to be promoting.

Let’s start with how they basically make it seem okay to use fake I.D.’s and underage drink at a club. Yes, of course thousands of teens do it everyday but that doesn’t mean they should televise it. When Blaine’s cute new Warbler friend suggests Kurt and Blaine go out to the club, I couldn’t believe Kurt agreed to it. Granted, Kurt was the designated driver, but it was still a poor demonstration of what teens in high school should look forward to. Maybe I’m being a little dramatic, but we all know for damn sure there’s a significant difference in the amount of fourteen year olds watching this show compared to anyone over twenty-one.

The next thing about this episode was all of the sex they were promoting. We have enough Teen Mom shows already, the last thing we need is a prego Rachel Berry. Okay, sex is natural and the majority of high school students are having sex but that still doesn’t mean you should put it on TV even more! Rachel and Finn’s first attempt at their “special moment” was incredibly awkward to watch. I’m sure that’s how they were trying to portray it, but Finn takes awkward to the next level! I liked the fact they made a point to say that they “love” each other and whatnot, but still. The whole “love” part was destroyed when Blaine and Rachel lost it in order to improve their acting in a school play. It’s a school play for crying out loud! It’s not that serious!

Overall the episode was a huge letdown. Those were the only two things that I could focus on the entire show because of how awkward and disappointing it was. Of course, my favorite scene was “America” from McKinley’s West Side Story. It was perfect. Santana is an amazing vocalist and was perfect for that role. I was also glad I got a quick glimpse at Rory. He’s so cute! I really hope next episode picks up the slack a little bit. Otherwise, I don’t know how much longer I am going to be a Gleek.

What did you guys think?  Were you more into the episode, or did it not do much for you either?  Talk back in the comments!

I wish they had skipped the high school sex and just showed us West Side Story from beginning to end.  That would have been a fantastic show and a great use of everyone’s talents.

Answer to the opening question: the scrip it poorly written. They were just able to hide it better in early season 1. It was all down hill from there.

I was so glad to see Karofsky again, since he was one my favorite parts of last season.  Didn’t realize he had transfered schools, which is ironic considering Kurt’s reason for transferring.  I wonder if his character will come back though, doesn’t really seem like it.

I was surprised West Side Story already started .  It seemed like it was going to be the big story arc for the first half of the season so I thought they would drag it out longer, showing us rehearsals and stuff.  But whatevs.

I liked how Finn and Rachel’s first first attempt went, because I thought Rachel’s motivation was ridiculous, so it was nice to see Finn reject her. So I was disappointed when they went ahead with it by the end of the episode, but considering how much they advertised this as the “First Time” episode I wasn’t that surprised.  Same thing with Kurt and Blaine, I was actually creeped out by their car scene.  It was just very forceful.  So once again, I liked that Kurt pointed out everything that was wrong with that situation.   I didn’t think either couple was ready by the end, but Glee is not known for its good decision-making.

But with all that said, I’m not really bothered by this episode being about teen sex in general.  Its not the first time this show has had teen characters having sex, in fact it was a huge part of the show at the beginning of season 1.  And if any real life teens or children are badly affected by it, then they only have themselves and their parents to blame.  Because this show has ALWAYS been inappropriate, and was never really meant for tweens.  I mean the very first episode had Will planting weed on Finn, and  Finn’s premature ejaculation!  And don’t forget all of the series’ references to Brittany and Santana scissoring.

I have always thought the show was meant to be an adult comedy version of high school musical, but it got so popular with kids that they capitalized on it.  And I think this is one of the biggest problems with Glee.  They are still struggling to figure out what they want to be: the adult show about teens, that has biting humor and heart (what it was first promised to be), OR a kid-friendly family show full of musical numbers and morals (what it claims to be when convenient).  Pick one Glee!  Because trying to have it both ways just does not work.  (Sorry for the rant!  I guess this show just brings it out in me, haha.)

To end on a positive note, I loved that Coach Beiste got a date.  :)  That was definitely my favorite story in this episode, it was just so sweet.  And I totally agree with how perfect Santana was in the West Side Story scenes.  That girl needs to only wear red retro dresses from now on!  She looked and sounded great. :)
