Hello Greendale! Or you know, OffColorTV. I’ve been missing our Community recaps so I thought I’d volunteer to take them on, in addition to recapping Hart of Dixie, which I’m sure you’re reading and commenting on, and the upcoming Once Upon a Time because I’m a little bit crazy. Most of the recaps will probably be quick and dirty (which is pretty much how I imagine sex with Jeff to be), plus there’s really only so much to say about a 20 minute comedy. The biggest change you’ll be seeing is that I’m a major Jeff and Annie fan so obviously, I liked this episode.
Remedial Chaos Theory took one story line and showed us seven possible outcomes, each with varying degrees of chaotic results. I have to say I really liked it because it allowed us to see a few “what ifs” without completely fucking up the show. And while I love Jeff/Annie, those two together right now would still be fucked up. Now if Eliza Coupe can swing by from Happy Endings for a guest spot and be the agent who’s crushing on Abed again, I would be totally down. Anyway, the timelines made some interesting commentary too on the fact that everything went best when Jeff wasn’t around. Pierce may not be the worst of the group. But I’m choosing not to believe that since I hate Pierce. I’d give my favorite timelines to roll #1 (Troy) & #7 (Jeff). Although if Evil Troy & Evil Abed want to hang out awhile, that’s totally cool.
Also, just in case the hint of Inception threw you off on determining the exact timeline that was real, it was the one where Jeff is sent for the pizza. Confirmed by Community creator, Dan Harmon. Oh, and there could be an alternate universe where Evil Abed exists.
Anyway, I said quick and dirty so:
The kiss: Granted, my fangirl heart was happy but it was also such a nice move away from the usual “dream sequence”. This posited that there was a reality where these two kissed and the other timelines still kept them close to each other.
Britta’s dance move to the pizza: I don’t know what the fuck that was, nor have I ever seen someone high do that but I couldn’t stop laughing every time.
Abed sending a fake invitation to Jeff: Love that Abed totally knew Jeff would try to bail and guaranteed that he wouldn’t have an excuse.
The troll doll: Donald Glover just does so well when asked to be freaked out and shitting his pants and the troll was perfect. Especially the timeline where everything went to hell.
“‘Rule #2: Avoid touchy topics like the Negro problem.’ The book was written in the 40s.” (The way Troy delivers this line cracks me up, as does the gun line.)
“Oh look, Indiana Jones and the Apartment of Perpetual Virginity.”
“Chop busted, fellow adult.”
“There’s no such thing as Single Malt, Platinum Boobs and Billiards Club?!”
“Guys, what does a pregnancy test look like? Okay so this is definitely a gun.”
“You’re not allowed to have ‘baking things’ as an identity!”
“Pizza guys are looking worse and worse. All the good ones must have gone into porn.”
“And Jeff will forever remain a conniving son of a bitch.”
“Clearly you don’t understand anything about defeating trolls.”
“Evil!Troy and Evil!Abed!”
Pop Culture References:
There weren’t as many in this episode, focusing more on character development and insight but I wanted to include the section so you’d know it would be around later.
Evil Abed’s goatee is a play on Evil Spock who has a black beard.
Some say the alternate timeline reference at the end, when Abed says they have to take over the lives of their good versions is a Fringe reference but it could fit a lot of time travel stories. Still, I’ll take a Fringe reference since it links Pacey to Community.
The better Fringe reference is when Abed hears the other world in the apartment.
Doctor Who was referenced at the end when Troy & Abed are watching TV in their apartment. They have the Inspector Spacetime episode on.
The Chekhov’s Gun reference comes from Annie’s removal of the brick. Seemingly a quick joke but that move sets up the need for the pizza guy to buzz the apartment, thus creating the multiple timelines.
Okay, so how did y’all like the episode? Tell me your favorite timelines in the comments because like Jeff I crave attention and like Shirley I expect it to be positive. Did I miss any pop culture references and is there anything you wish I’d talked more about?
