SYTYCD Top 14. Adam Shankman Jr.

Special guest judge of the night is Carmen Electra. You should have seen the look on my wife’s face when I told her Carmen was an actual dancer. Not as special guest judge is Travis Wall. I feel like he is being Adam Shankman Jr. I was thinking that and the wife confirmed it when she said the same thing to me later on in the show.

Kicking the routines off, we start out with a boys-only routine. It was weird. They said it was going to be very manly. Um, nope. Not a fan.

Marco and Melanie – They are doing some jazz to Lady Gaga. It started a little slow, but as usual, they killed it. Probably my favorite part of the routine was the fact that Melanie’s hair is growing out and isn’t shellacked to her head today. Great start to the night.

Alexander and Sasha – Rockin’ a hiphop routine by some new guy, Shaun Evaristo. I really like his stuff and it is a nice change from the Nappy Tabs and Dave/Christopher Scott hiphop we generally see. They have the best chemistry on the show, Marco and Melanie notwithstanding. The judges pretty much all panned it though. Shows what I know.

[Sorry, no video!]

Tadd and Jordan – The wife seems to be confused that Tadd is a dancer from Utah. She seems unconvinced when I tell her they actually do allow dancing there. They do not allow alcohol. And poligamy? AOK by their books. Anyway, they are doing a waltz. This is one of those they did well but it was just so goddamn boring. Tadd did better than Jordan overall. You wouldn’t really know he was a b-boy.

Jess and Clarice – I know I sound like a broken record, but it is just so unfortunate that Jess and Clarice got stuck together. They are doing a contemporary routine. According to my wife, this choreographer is the male equivalent of Sonya Tayeh. Easily the best performance out of these two so far this season.

Chris and Ashley – They are doing the salsa. Speaking of salsa, I’m starving. I’ll tell you what I’m not though – hungry for more of this routine. They could be in trouble.

[Thank god there isn’t video of this train wreck.]

Ricky and Ryan – So they are doing some weird jazz routine. I feel like the judges told them to go make up their own dance backstage and come out and perform it. It was not good at all. I would be happy if we didn’t see this choreographer again. Any one want to make a guess how the judges felt about it? Yeah, they loved it. Once again, I’m a dummy.

Mitchell and Caitlynn – Wow. That was one hell of a contemporary number. They got a standing O from the judges, Mary cried and called it best of the night, and Carmen rambled incoherently. I absolutely agree, that was amazing. Plus I’m a real sucker for Celine Dion. Please don’t tell anyone I said that.

[Really sorry, no video!]

They wrap up the show with an all girl number. It is something about a funeral. None of the funerals I’ve been too were like this. I’d wish more people dead if they were.

Consulting the crystal ball says this week it is going to be Alexander & Sasha, Tadd & Jordan, and Chris & Ashley. I wish Ricky and Ryan were in the bottom three but I don’t think that’s going to happen this week. Why do I get the feeling they are going to straggle along into the Top 10? Why do I get the feeling I am going to throw things at the TV when that happens?

So what did you think about this week’s performances? Is Travis a Mini-Shankman? Who are your bottom three? How do you feel about Celine Dion? If you like her, can we be friends? Comments, my friends.

    My bottom is:
    Sasha/Alexander – just awful
Jordan/Tadd – it was just blah
Ashley/Chris – it was bad but I love Tito Puente

I wish Ryan and Ricky would be in the bottom but I think they will skate by again. I think if Jordan and Tadd are in the bottom they have to go home right?

I liked the girls dance but I kept looking at Melanie and trying to pretend Ryan wasn’t there at all. The boys dance was just fucking weird.

I love Travis and hate Carmen. Really? What’s with the Pussycat Doll love this season? Did someone get a great blow job or what?

  • Strunkette

I really think it’s going to be Ashley and Chris. Did anyone else notice him in the terrible boys routine? He was totally off when they were suppose to be dancing in unison. I thought they should have gone last week.

I don’t think Creepy Uncle Nigel will get rid of Jordan and I don’t think they should get rid of Tadd. I think he’s the most versatile guy in the competition. Plus they keep getting stuck with ballroom while Melanie and Marko (who I love) keep getting jazz and contemporary. Jordan annoys me to no end so if she left I wouldn’t be heartbroken.

Sasha and Alexander were terrible but I like her and think she will be top 5. Alexander could go.

Carmen was a horrible judge. She never knew what to say. Travis was fantastic. I thought he gave great critiques and would make a fantastic permanent judge if it didn’t mean him no longer choreographing. I didn’t get a Shankman vibe, but I don’t really remember his judging. I have a short memory :)

I like Tadd. Can they get rid or Sasha and Chris? I wish they would go ahead and break up the couples already! (I never thought I would say that!)

I think Carmen smoked a doobie before the show.

  • Andy

I know they want to get the chemistry rolling so they keep the couples together (note: only couples have been eliminated so far), but seriously, I would love to see a mix up.

I think Sasha is far too likable to get the boot and same goes for Tadd.

As for the judges, yes, Carmen was a bumbling fool, but I thought Travis got a little too technical at times: “Point your toe on the plie.” Alright, we get it. You know what a plie is. Overall I liked him quite a bit.

  • Randi

@Patty My bottom 3 and your bottom 3 are the same.

I didn’t like Melanie and Marko as much this week. Also, their choreographer sweats like a god damned freak. He was sitting in the audience just pouring sweat. It honestly looked like he was from some sort of SNL (or In Living Color…because, let’s face it, ILC was awesome…oooh…or The State!) sketch where he has gland issues and just pours sweat. I seem to remember something like that from one of those shows. Yeah, he was creepy AND sweaty and I didn’t like him at all.

My favorite dance of the night was Caitlynn and Mitchell. It was beautiful. I also liked Jess & Clarice. Maybe I just really like spinny spins and jumpy jumps (that’s what Paul calls contemporary dancing). We need more hot latin dances, please.

No one this season has remarkable personality. I don’t love them as much as I have loved other seasons. They are all really good but really good is really boring.

Chris was terrible in the group number and way off. He’s going home. I think that Ashley will also go home but I think Jordan should be gone. I also think Alexander should already be gone because he’s not very good and has way too much gay face to ever have chemistry with one of these girls.

  • Patty

@Randi – gay face! and gland issues!

Your favorites are the same because we saw the same thing! I was shocked and the beauty of Caitlynn and Mitchell mostly because I hate them. And I didn’t like Melanie and Marko as much because I think her interview tainted me with her horrific personality.

I am kinda excited to see some all stars. Can we have so hunky boys back please? I don’t have a boyfriend this season because they are all…greasy?

  • Andy

@Randi: I was watching Chris on the group number and what happened is he did some thing with his hands in the hood of his sweatshirt. Then when he was done, it fell forward instead of back and covered his face so he couldn’t see. The rest of the routine wasn’t great for him, but that was the big goof.

Also, spinny spins and jumpy jumps. Hilarious. When Nigel loved the ronde to the knees move last night (how the fuck do I know what a ronde is?) I called it the quintessential contemporary move, also known as falling down. You should ask Marlene about my rendition when she comments here later.

@Patty: Mitchell feels like a doppelganger for Brandon from a couple season back. Mia called him a jerk and arrogant just before the Top 20 and no one really liked him but he was a ridiculous dancer. Toward the end he definitely got a following though. I think Mitchell roped quite a few people in last night with the fact that he was homeless as a child. Pretty amazing story.

  • Andy

Congrats to Sasha on carrying that team. Alexander, you owe her big time.

Loved that Ryan and Ricky were in the bottom three but can’t figure out for the life of me why the judges thought her 30 second epileptic seizure was good dancing. We just can’t seem to shake Ryan.

I’m not even sure why Jordan and Tadd were even there. I guess everyone thought it was a boring routine.

Chris and Ashley just had zero chemistry with each other and with the audience. I watching Ashley’s journey, I’m really not sure how she even got in the Top 20 to begin with. Maybe they had a lisp quota to fill.

  • Patty

I think Ryan made it because compared to the other 2 female solos she looked like she tried.

Nobody likes Jordan. She is boring. We love Tadd. I think they are trying to keep couple intact util the top 10 so Jordan got a pass. Too bad as I would have loved to see Ryan pared with Tadd.

I am glad Nigel reminded them that they need to BRING IT to every solo. Last nights were just bad. I love Tadd and it was entertaining but he didn’t show anything. Poor Chris had the best solo but was paired with boring Ashley.

On a side note, I found out Chris actually teaches somewhere around here and a co-workers niece is one of his students. Random.

I still want to see Jess and Melanie dance together.

  • Strunkette

    @Andy epileptic seizure and lisp quota…. HI-larious!

    My thoughts from last night…

Why was Marko near tears at finding out they were safe? At this point I’m pretty sure they know they are going to be safe and even if they weren’t the judges would never get rid of them. It seemed a bit over the top. Melanie on the other hand was like “yep” and dragged him off the stage.

Sasha definitely is the reason they escaped the bottom 3. Alexander should be kissing her feet.

I think Chris and Ashley should have gone home last week. Even though Chris had a great solo he’s not a good overall dancer. Ashley was just there.

I’m also not a Ryan fan and wasn’t one in the past. Is she the reason Mia isn’t involved this season? I know that Debbie Allen had to stay away when one of her students made it to the Top 20. I’m not sad Mia took a break, it was time, but Ryan doesn’t really seem that amazing. It’s super nice of Mia to take her under her dance wing and pay for her to learn. Is some of that connection making the judges keep her around? Rickey is much better than Jess or Alexander, so I’m glad he’s still around.
