Arrow: I guess from now on I’ll be watching you pee.

Okay guys, I’m keeping this one short(ish) & sweet. Mainly because I was a little confused for a good part of the episode.

Let me start with this week’s amellyfact…

“The Felicity Smoak sequence was filmed in the CBC buildings in Vancouver and the wall climbing sequence used a wife for safety, not assistance.”

First: I’ve only been to Vancouver once. I wasn’t in love with it but I have plans to go back & give it another chance. Not that you guys care about that…my point is that I don’t know Vancouver well (or at all, really) so I don’t know where the CBC (Canadian Broadcasting Corporation) buildings are or if there’s serious relevance beyond it just being cool that the CW shot our Canadian boy in the offices of a Canadian TV network that doesn’t air the show…I’m probably thinking way too hard about this. Or not hard enough.

Second: For clarity, I copied this amellyfact directly from Stephen’s email…the typo is his. I included it ‘cuz I’m an asshole but also because I thought it was funny. Seriously, if safety wives are a thing I want to know where to apply. I probably wouldn’t mind them using me.

Obviously he meant they used a wire for safety. The wire sounds less comfortable than a wife.

  • YES!!! Seconds into the episode and we get SHIRTLESS OLIVER!!! I hope that they’re just setting the theme for the rest of the show with this. (I’m totally channelling my girl Megs here…she’s mastered the art of blatantly objectifying Stephen…to his face, really. Deceivingly, I try to maintain a little sense of decorum in public. He doesn’t need to know that licking the TV screen in the privacy of my own home may or may not be a thing I do.)
  • Shit. From licking abs (and backs & shoulders) (figuratively) to Oliver referring to ‘evils’ as ‘cancers’. I don’t like this. Just because I don’t like the reference. I mean, I get it…Cancer IS evil and I think we’ve all been affected by Cancer in some way…I just hate the reminder. It’s a personal thing.
  • And THEN…Jesus. Amell delivers this line: “But, cancers can be fought & conquered. All it takes is a surgeon and the right instrument.” And then I was ugly crying buckets of tears. For real. If you’re following Stephen on Twitter or Facebook, you know his mother is a Breast Cancer survivor. A recent survivor. Stephen’s been sharing little pieces of her story since April(ish) and his support of her and her attitude throughout has been beautiful & inspiring. So, my ugly tears were for people in MY life but also for Stephen being able to just say that line & thinking of the meaning of it for him & his mom. He essentially got to say his “Fuck You Cancer” on TV.
  • Okay…enough of the heavy stuff. Heavy for me anyway. By the way…this could’ve been why I wasn’t paying as close attention as I usually do & ended up confused. The mind is a powerful thing. Mine was wandering. Anyway…
  • Clearly this sniper dude is the “Deadshot” guy everybody’s talking about? (I’m starting to REALLY fear that I’m not comic book qualified enough to be doing this review.)
  • 2 MINUTES IN AND ANOTHER SHIRTLESS SCENE!! Mind you, he’s sewing himself up & that’s making me need to look away from the TV. Not cool.
  • The poison bullet  thing is fancy. So, here’s the way I saw this scene…dude shoots/poisons Arrow….ends up hacking into his computer system…is that what that was? When Oliver was looking at his computer screen and saw the clock? But Ollie just leaves…doesn’t try to stop the download…IF that’s what was even happening…was it really just a clock & Oliver figured out he was late & Dig was gonna be pissed?? Did I miss something? See!? I’m confused.
  • Badass Thea’s all hungover & shit…after committing a B&E with her girls…and her mother’s just gonna let her skip school? Nuh uh. No ma’am. You’re going to school. Probably boarding school. More than likely, boot camp for teenage bitches who think they’re grown. You’ll learn.
  • SHIRTLESS DEADSHOT!!! I’m not sure caps are justified here but he clearly laid off the carbs for this scene so I figure I can throw him a bone.
  • I love this whole Oliver/Tommy/Dig scene where they’re talking about Oliver’s new nightclub. So fun…even more so when Tommy leaves & it’s just Ollie & Dig. I like their chemistry.
  • So…this climbing the wall scene where Oliver’s looking for Deadshot’s vantage point/bullets/stuff…which…if Deadshot’s called Deadshot ‘cuz he never misses…how did Oliver end up finding a stray bullet? …anyway, this is obviously where they used the safety wire. Loser. I totally climb walls like that all the time with no wire. (Translation: duh…OBViously you used a wire…no need to explain the safety part, Stephen. I’d question your sanity and the sanity of all those involved in the show had they let you NOT use a wire.)
  • If Dig is standing by watching Detective Lance accuse Walter of being involved in the last two shooting deaths in the city because of his business ties with the victims, who’s babysitting Oliver?
  • Oh Thea. I’d imagine the badass teenager thing isn’t gonna go over well with your brother for very long. Still, I’m entirely in love with you outing Tommy & Laurel. Even though we know Oliver isn’t surprised in the least.
  • Holy fight scene, Batman!! (sorry…I hate myself)
  • Clearly Tommy being able to fight will lead to some kind of sidekick thing…right? And then LAUREL throws down!? I’m impressed. Also, I may be girl crushing on her even harder right now. Seriously though…where is all this going…where are my comic book people? Explain your theories, please!!

  • I know we saw him earlier…but who’s the Chinese dude…does he have a name other than Arrow’s nurse/mentor?
  • Is Big Belly Burger really a thing? I want a cheeseburger.
  • Deadshot’s fancy wrist machinegun seems far more efficient than Ollie’s bow & arrow. (notice how I’m not griping about the impossibility of outrunning multiple sprays of machine gun bullets…again?)
  • Felicity Smoak. Yum. Laurel who?? I think I just fell in love. Seriously…I want Oliver to be with her. Am I allowed to want that? What’s her story…I need background. I need comic books.

  • Could Detective Lance, please…at least once…say, “Shit, his voice is SO familiar!”
  • I’m actually warming up to this Laurel & tommy thing. It could be my newfound love for Felicity. Whatever.
  • I love that Oliver’s starting to crack around Dig.
  • Deadshot is not fucking around!! Man/woman/child, he doesn’t care!
  • Wow. Arrow straight through the eye. There’s your dead shot.
  • Holy shit!! Is Dig seeing him?
  • Oh!!! Evidence of a new class that must’ve been held on the island…Pharmacology! That is a VERY smart, little, island nation of people.
  • YES!!!! He’s totally letting Dig in!! I like this. So much. He needs somebody in the know. NOW I can’t wait for next week.

To sum up…for me, the beginning was kind of slow…but, that could’ve just been the mood I was in. Towards the end though? Awesome. It all picked up & more stuff’s starting to get pieced together & I love Oliver trusting Dig and I can’t wait to see Felicity again. We’ll see her again…right? Why are the IT nerds always the cutest, most awkward, most adorkable people ever? (on TV anyway…our IT guy is not adorkable…at all)

What did you guys think? What did I miss…are there things I HAVE to know or am I okay going along blindly & just getting stuff fed to me week by week as the show unfolds?

Felicity is from another character’s lady persons – Firestorm. She’s not a part of Ollie’s world in the comics so you’re not missing anything there.

Deadshot is a pretty commonly used villain in DC. He’s not specific to the Olliverse.

Speedy is Ollie’s sidekick (and a boy) in the comic world (though now it’s on his own, Ollie doesn’t have one right now), and that’s the nickname he gave his sister in the tv show, so … that might be a seed they’ve planted, or just a cute throwaway. He HAS had a girl sidekick, Mia (who also went by Speedy).

    Hope that helps!

  • erintalkscrap

Definitely helpful, thanks! Although…the fact that Felicity isn’t part of Oliver’s world in the comics makes me a little scared we won’t see her again…surely that won’t be the case.
    ;)

Okay. I don’t know if any of your comic book people have mentioned this yet but I have a pretty sure feeling that Laurel is at least a nod to The Black Canary who has teamed up with Green Arrow in the past and they were (sometimes? it’s a little sketch with all the continuities) in a relationship together. Black Canary’s name is Dinah Lance OR Dinah Laurel Lance. I don’t know if the shows going there? But it might be some interesting trivia for you so there you go! (Also it might point toward the writers endgame shipwise.)
I also really liked Felicity in this- I mean she came out of nowhere but I immediately have this insane desire for her to be a main character. Seriously…needs to happen.
DIG’s man, the ending. I’m so glad we don’t need to see more episodes of the writers having Oliver creatively dodge the poor man who is just trying to do his job. I’m hoping that Tommy and Laurel with also be alerted soon enough of the goings on so we can get a some really great team crime-fighting moments. (though obviously Tommy is probably just going to be there for moral support while he lets the others kick ass.) Team Arrow (which was actually a thing in the comics…but different). YAY.
I’m glad we didn’t see another mystery-with-Moira ending. One last thing, I know we saw mention of Oliver as alterego on the news but has anyone mentioned his hero name (Green Arrow) yet. Just checking! I’m enjoying the show and your recaps. I don’t think Arrow was made for comic book fans exclusively, and as far as I can tell they’ve changed enough that even comic fans are going to have to sit and wait for answers.
FUN FACT: In the comic origins of Green Arrow his parents were MAULED BY LIONS. Yep….

  • Eric Pharand

It was mostly boring. Deadshot’s tattoos were insanely cool. Laurel saved Oliver and Tommy from a worse beatdown and she was such a dork creeping on Oliver online and then being embarrassed at getting caught :) Oliver has a voice-over while sitting next to the cool IT woman LOL. Great last scene.

I read in an interview that Laurel will be Black Canary eventually

TRAINING MONTAGE! Yes, that means I’m happy with the episode. Especially because she showed more of Oliver’s back.

The Island stuff is weird and I need to know WTF is going on. I know I’m supposed to wait and have it teased out for awhile, but dang. SWAT looking dudes? Hmm.

So happy that Dig is going to know. Secrets are always more fun when you can share it with someone else who’s also badass.

Tattooing your kills all over your body seems like possibly the worst idea ever? haha

Laurel being a badass kind of came out of nowhere. Her line was kinda weird too. But I’m excited about the possibility of her being a sidekick of some sort.

The voice overs weren’t as bad this week? Or maybe my affection for Amell is growing. That might be it.

  • erintalkscrap

First of all…THANK YOU!!! (again)…seriously, the gifs make the whole post SO much more fun! ;)
I’m really hoping that there’s at least one training sequence in every episode ever. Is that too much to ask? Too shallow? Too pervy? I don’t care…I want what I want.
It’s like you’re in my head though…the island stuff…it’s making me mental that we don’t know what went on over there yet…other than all of the obvious/various classes that are available.
AND, the tattoing thing…I meant to mention that in the review…I have tattoos. I’d have to agree that tattooing YOURSELF definitely seems like the worst idea ever. never mind the thought of inflicting that kind of pain on your self… What if you sneezed? Or hiccuped? Or spelled something wrong?? You’d have to really practice writing upside down & backwards for a long effing time. No thank you.
It seems everybody’s affection for Amell is growing. This makes me happy. For him. Also because I’ve been getting to say “I told you so” a LOT. ;)

  • erintalkscrap

Okay wait…I *loved* that Laurel jumped in & shocked the shit out of everybody but I’m fairly certain that had she not been there, the boys would’ve been fine. Oliver just would’ve had to expose his badass self (figuratively) to Tommy sonner than planned. Still…I love that that’s where they seem to be taking her. :)

  • erintalkscrap

I agree with everything you’ve said…except the non-Moira-mystery ending, lol. I mean, I loved the Oliie/Dig ending, as I’ve mentioned and THAT’s what has me super excited about next week’s episode…BUT…I was setting myself up for new, weekly reveals of his mom being the worst. mom. ever.
Mauled by lions??? Shit. That’s harsh. So, in the comics Moira was never around? As in…this mauled by lions thing isn’t something we’re going to see eventually? Maybe on the island….maybe that’s what’s gonna happen to the old Chinese dude.

  • Eric Pharand

Maybe. What do you think about Oliver having a voice-over sitting next to Felicity? It was laughably poor,

  • http://twitter.com/twinkiesandwine Laura

Laurel giving the beat-down made me cheer, because if there’s one thing I want from this show (besides the shirtless Amell) is for her to become Black Canary.

Also, I’m getting some sort of vibe that Felicity Smoak might end up being a sort of Oracle/Watchtower-entity for Arrow in the future. and I’m glad Dig’s in on the secret, since I figured he’d end up being sort of an Alfred/Happy Hogan for Ollie. [/nerd-mode]

  • erintalkscrap

Oh no. I envision a whole lotta time spent on Wikipedia in the near future. (Thank you!)
Anything that makes Felicity a regular is fine in my books. I just want her to stay. Forever.

  • http://twitter.com/twinkiesandwine Laura

I’m wondering if (wayyy down the line) Tommy might end up going to the dark side, especially if he feels angry at Ollie and/or Laurel if they end up getting back together (think Harry Osborn/Green Goblin, minus the daddy issues). I mean, they probably didn’t give him the last name “Merlyn” if that wasn’t at least a possibility they might want to have the option of pursuing further down the line.

  • erintalkscrap

I would have to re-watch to really judge…but, if I had thought it was THAT bad, I totally would’ve commented on it. For the record, I’m not rewatching…I want to keep my Felicity moments pure. (kidding. sort of.)

  • Eric Pharand

He turns away from her and stares into space and then the voice-over starts and he’s still sitting there looking into space.

  • Dawn

Loved this episode. And the CBC building is a pretty big deal- it was for me anyway as a kid from Whistler going to the big city of Vancouver on those weekends, walking around and seeing the CBC logo when that was the only freaking channel we got back then and all they aired was hockey.

Anyway, the wire work- that’s insane. We had a wire for figure skating when we were learning double jumps way back when- it’s you doing all the work still but the wire is just a ‘i’m not gonna die’ harness. Which means Stephen Amell can climbs walls. Which is pretty freaking incredible. I’m pretty sure I’m hooked.

This comment has been very nostalgia filled. Sorry about that. It’s the Vancouver thing.

  • http://twitter.com/twinkiesandwine Laura

Yep. I’m not even a big comic-reader, but I know all sorts of random comic facts/mythos from various intense Wiki-spirals.

Actually, I have all the basics for a Black Canary costume, but no appropriate place to wear it this Halloween.
