Nashville – You Can Kiss my Decision as I’m Walking Out the Door

Dayna had a conflict so I am stepping in for the pilot episode of Nashville.

Let me just quickly say, I know nothing about this show, country music, music in general or Nashville.  This show was on my radar because of the 5 star buzz it was getting and Connie Britton.

In the pilot, the story centers around Rayna, the older, wiser established country diva and Juliette, the young, auto tuned to hell superstar new chick on the block.  Think Faith Hill and Taylor Swift if they hated each other and had cameras following them everywhere.  Oh, um…

They are both on the same label and since Rayna’s new album and tour are not selling well and they want her to “co-headline” a tour with Juliette.  Really they mean open for her.  Neither are on board with this.

For me there are three main story pods:

Rayna is married to Teddy (Eric Close) who lost his shirt in the market and is bored and wants something to do. Rayna’s dad, Lamar (Powers Boothe) wants Teddy to run for mayor of Nashville so he can control the mayor and get a ballpark built.

Julliette is just a bitch with a crack head (no really) for a mom who is always calling and asking for money.  She is a manufactured star who is loved by the youngsters, including Rayna’s two daughters. She also seems to always be horny and fucks everyone including Rayna’s lead guitar player/producer Deacon.

Scarlett who is a waitress and is Deacon’s niece.  She writes poems and works at the Bluebird Cafe. Her boyfriend is Avery (Jonathan Jackson with a damn soul patch).  She meets Gunnar who thinks her poems should be songs.  Their first collaboration:

There are all kinds of delicious shenanigans on this show.  I was actually surprised how much I liked it.  I don’t like country music but this show is not about county music. It’s about the music business and the drama that goes on behind the scenes. It’s full of pretty people and good music and the dialog is really good.  I am on board for the entire tour.

Here’s the promo for next week:

Let us know if you are watching and what you think.  Are you going to add another night time soap to the DVR? Did you download the soundtrack from iTunes? How much do you hate Hayden Panettiere?

God, Hayden is kind of the worst. I’m already hoping for her to get laryngitis or something. I liked the show more than I thought I would too, but I don’t know if I’m 100% sold yet. My favorite parts were with Scarlett and Gunnar. That song they sang was kind of beautiful. And a little heartbreaking. I hope that manager guy’s idea is a good one!

I like the music industry aspect of the show, and I’m looking forward toore on that front. I like Rayna, but i don’t love her yet. Here’s hoping episode 2 brings it even more!

My favorites were Scarlett and Gunner too! I am hoping that they pull her in and she goes on tour with Rayna.

I loved when Rayna was yelling at her dad. He is bad news. I don’t see how the whole daddy and husband thing is going to fit in but I am guessing it will. And it will be bad.

Their song reminded me of “Black Acres” by Elysian Fields.

    I can totally see that

The song “If I Didn’t Know Better” is actually a cover of the folk duo The Civil Wars, but I really like Nashville’s version better. It’s available on iTunes for anyone who like me could not sleep until they found the song for download.

I really loved the premiere, except for Hayden Panettiere, whom I didn’t hate but just think she’s not that good of an actress and on a show like Heroes which was mediocre, it doesn’t matter but when everyone else is pretty awesome, it’s a lot more noticeable. But she’s not detrimentally awful, just a C+ actress with nice tits.

However, the whole Scarlett, “I’m not a songwriter I’m a ‘poet’ who just happens to write poems that rhyme in a songy way and oh yeah, I have a great voice and am working at a waitress in a legendary country bar where many acts have been discovered” bullshit was a big eyeroll for me. Wouldn’t it have been easier to just say “yes, i’m a songwriter” since 30 minutes later she becomes a songwriter?

I liked it, but I didn’t love it as much as all of the critics seem to. I agree with others that Hayden is really the problem spot for this show. Mainly I was excited to see Tanner from Suits! Although it took me a minute to figure out where I recognized him from.

See, I will always think of Eric Close as the guy from Without a trace and really before that The Magnificent 7!

I really liked the pilot, though admittedly I love Connie Britton and since there was no way in hell I’d watch American Horror Story, I’ve been deprived. Loved the cover of “If I Didn’t Know Better” and I feel safe in saying this version is better than the original. But mad props to The Civil Wars for the lyrics.
I thought it was great that both Rayna & Juliet have not so nice sides. Like you want to hate Juliet but she’s got a lot of shit to deal with and then I want to be all yeah Team Rayna but she’s clearly kind of oblivious to things and a bit of a diva. I don’t know, that just struck me as more well-rounded.

And since I may be the only Hayden fan on here, I liked her too. I feel like Hayden gets the Scarlett Johanssen treatment a lot, as in producers just make her up as a vixen and don’t really give her a chance to show more than a blonde femme fatale thing. Like tons of people were raving about Scarlett this year because of how Joss let her be awesome in Avengers and her role in “We Bought a Zoo” (A movie everyone should see immediately) and I guess I just wish Hayden would get the same chances from producers. But all in all, looking forward to the rest of the season.

I thought Lamar was going to hurt Rayna. He’s scary.

Okay. I am on my nook and have no idea what the buttons I just clicked on did. For the record, all I was trying to do was “like” your comment because I agree. Especially with everything in the first paragraph.

Hands down my favourite pilot of the fall season! I wasn’t going to watch at all but it got such good reviews and I do like Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere so I decided to give it a try. It was so good! Really hope they manage to keep up the quality and don’t turn it into the disaster that was Smash.

I like Hayden as well! Don’t quite understand why everyone hates on her so much!
