You guys … clearly, I’m a few days late and I don’t even know if by now I’ve had time to fully process my feelings on the season finale, but clearly I have them and they are many. And obviously, OBVIOUSLY, I loved Jake and Tamara, drunk Ming, crazy Lissa, gay Ricky, and finding out that Clark was Not God. All good things. But the big thing was that Jenna finally made her choice, and that’s what I want to really focus on.
You guys! She picked Matty! Yay! And now the show can proceed with ripping my heart out, the way it really wants to!
So a lot of this episode centered around the sophomore summer trip to Europe, which T desperately wanted to go on, and which Val desperately wanted Jenna to go on. Jenna wanted Matty to go, but he wanted to stay at home and work at camp, and so Jenna ultimately chose Matty over a trip to Europe. Which, you all know how much I love Matty, and even I know that was completely idiotic. And you also know that I maybe (probably) would’ve made the same choice as a sophomore in high school. Teenagers are idiots and so was I. What do you want me to say?
Anyway, Lacey told Jenna about choosing DILF, and a story about how Ben didn’t like dancing so Lacey just sat on his lap, watching everyone else have fun. And Jenna found herself repeating her mother’s history and having a moment, and while yes, I do agree with the assessment that that’s awfully self-aware for a teenager to realize that they might’ve gotten what they want, but not what they need … I also do think that it’s possible for a teenager, and especially one like Jenna, to connect those moments and to feel pretty uneasy about it. My only hope now is that Jenna really pulled Matty up in the first season, rather than letting him drag her down. Maybe that pattern will continue. I can hope.
What did you guys think? Were you happy with Jenna’s choice? What were your feelings about the season overall? Share in the comments!
