Oh Annie! You really should have done what Auggie asked you to and just gone home! But revenge must have felt good!
The summer finale of Covert Affairs didn’t slow down much from the previous couple of episodes. We skipped the whole “Annie gets better” and jumped straight into “Annie has recuperated and is mad.” I would have thought the CIA would have sent Annie to see a shrink or something after such a traumatic event? Instead it seems like she’s just bottled everything up inside and is boiling over with frustration over the slow workings of interagency bureaucracy.
And who can blame her really? I mean, Simon is DEAD! I repeat, there will be no more Simon on our TV screen! I’m making a sad face while typing this.
So, obviously, Annie is back from her coma but not back to work, at least not officially. She’s pissed as hell at Lena for killing Simon and for giving her battle scars. And she’s hellbent on revenge (she keeps referring to it as justice but we know better).
And everyone is in a heightened emotional state because of Annie.
Oh the drama!
Picking up (presumably) a couple of months after Annie was shot, Annie is getting seriously impatient with the inability of the CIA to get Lena’s ass back to the US so she decides to head on over to Moscow to find the b***h herself. Interestingly enough Joan supports her in this endeavour and even provides her with a cover and cash to accomplish her mission. While Season 1 Joan would never have done any such thing, Season 3 Joan is all for it. And that hug? Joan actually hugged Annie?!? What is this, an alternate universe?!?
I feel like Joan’s character has been developed this season to become some kind of mother hen to Annie. Backing her up, refusing to believe she’s guilty of treason, and now this. Obviously Joan’s advice to Annie to remove emotion from the equation is something she should be looking into doing herself. Just look at her response to Arthur at dinner, she’s way too emotionally invested in her operative at this point to be an effective administrator. Which might explain the whole resignation letter business. Not sure what to feel about that!
Not that Joan won’t be in some serious trouble for allowing Annie to go rogue in Russia!
In Moscow we finally get to meet Simon’s sister, Gloria, and the mystery of the Dipper tattoo is brought to closure once and for all. Apparently Gloria means “morning star” in Russian and since she was always the bright star in Simon’s life, he got a tattoo to remind himself of her.
Did I completely miss though why the tattoo symbol was on Jai’s files? Anyone else able to explain that to me? And the significance of the symbol being on the cup in the café Gloria works in/owns?
Annie manages to recruit a former FSB spy, Dmitri, who knows Lena from Nairobi, to help her locate Lena’s whereabouts in Moscow. She completely underestimates Lena’s sex appeal though because it doesn’t take long for Dmitri to fall back into Lena’s arms and, well, bed. She’s a devious little tart that Lena! In the end, however, Annie gets her way and the location of Lena’s hide-out.
Being the master manipulator that she is, Lena tries to convince Annie that it would be an awesome career choice for her to become a double agent. She does manage to touch a nerve there because we all know how much Annie wants to be in control of everything all the time!
And then the tea kettle went off and everything went nuts and Annie used her borrowed, rusty old gun to SHOOT Lena! And that was that, pang pang the witch is dead!
Took me a little while to process that! I really thought Lena would manage to pull another disappearing act, leaving Annie even more frustrated but with a mission for the rest of the season. The Covert Affairs writers are really pulling out the big guns this season; nothing is sacred and nothing is certain! I like it!
What about Annie and Auggie you might ask? Well, they shared some emotional moments in this episode as well! It seems like Annie almost dying has triggered some loving feelings in Auggie’s heart and he really, really doesn’t want her to end up dead before he’s had a chance to process those feelings and confess them to her face to face (at least that’s how I read the situation). The moment between the two in the taxi on the way to the airport was very sweet and illustrates how both of them are hurting but can still rely on each other for support.
I wonder how far this emotional upheaval will be taken in this season. Will they or won’t they? Obviously Auggie still has some unresolved feelings about Parker and Annie was in love with Simon. Maybe some rebound sex? Not sure Auggie’s therapist would be happy about that
There you have it. We now know 100% that Lena was the big baddie, the leak in the CIA, the double agent, and the one who ordered the hit on Jai. We know she set up Annie with Simon because of Annie’s love for lost puppies (Ben Mercer anyone?) who struggle to be good boys. We know she expected Annie to go cuckoo over Simon but not the other way around.
Did Lena really go to all these lengths just to throw suspicion off herself onto Annie? That’s quite the scheme!
But the tattoo thing still bugs me. Unless I completely missed it somewhere along the way, it hasn’t been clarified why that same symbol was on the files Jai had assembled on Simon. Anyone?
In any case, it doesn’t look too good for our girl Annie now. Previews from next episode see her stuck in a Russian jail and Auggie all worried. Unfortunately we have to wait almost a month to see what happens! There’s a hiatus until October 16th so try to hang in there!
If you miss me horribly before that, then check out my Hart of Dixie rants reviews early next month!
