SYTYCD Top 16. Broken TV.

To start things off, I have some very disturbing news. It is well documented on this blog that I hate Cat Deeley. It seems to bring people together because just last week, a girl found this blog by googling “I hate Cat Deeley.” Well, it turns out my brother-in-law loves Cat Deeley. I’ve started the legal proceedings to have him excommunicated from the family.

On the judging panel, good news: Kelly Bundy is the guest judge tonight. She was a judge last season during the Top 6 and I thought she did well. She is a dancer so I feel like she has a bit more insight than some of the non-dancers but doesn’t over-analyze like some of the choreographers.

I’m concerned because it is the first group dance and my TV seems to be broken. There is no color except the red umbrella. That is a really cool effect. I really did notice though in this routine how little they probably practice the group numbers. No one was in sync and a it was a pretty easy routine. In any case, it was a good stuff. I was hoping it wasn’t Tyce. Unfortunately, it was. Ugh.

Leading off the night is a Nappy Tabs routine by George and Tiffany. I really liked the performances, the dancing, and the choreography. The music was totally distracting. I’m not a huge fan of B.O.B. and Nicky Minaj is just meh. Given that I have kids who are fortunately no longer infants, the theme stressed me out a bit, thinking back to the days when they would sleep for an hour, then cry for an hour. Rinse, repeat.

Oh hey! Brandon and Amber are partners now. Totally forgot that was going to happen. They’ve got a jazz number and did really well. It was pretty sexy. They had some major chemistry going on. The ending was a little awkward because it just sort of petered out instead of ending, but I guess that was an effect of the song choice. As Kelly Bundy pointed out, it was easy to forget that Brandon is a hiphopper/stepper.

It is Pasha with a chacha. And it is to my current guilty pleasure, Carly Rae Jepson – Call Me Maybe. I liked the outfits. They were a bit more contemporary. Dareian didn’t have to wear the silly low cut shirt and polyester bell bottoms that the dudes normally have to wear for the chacha. Janelle looked great in her chacha outfit. You know what was not good? The footwork. The chemistry. The hands.

Cole and Lindsay are doing a Mandy Moore (first appearance this season?) Love/Hate contemporary routine. It was an amazing routine. Probably my favorite part was the shadows on the wall. That is two really cool effects tonight (black and white in the group routine). Cole has been pretty amazing all season. I feel like he could have easily been dumped out when they were choosing the top 20 but I’m happy they took a chance on him.

Mandy Moore is back again for a Will and Amelia jazz routine. I’m not going to lie, I love Will’s suit. I like Will and I don’t much care for Amelia and overall, I didn’t care much for the routine.

Audrey and Cross-eyed Ryan Gosling are doing a salsa. The red outfits are giving me Daniel and Alexa flashbacks. The lack of charisma is also giving me Alexa flashbacks. CERG is just kind of walking around the stage, not moving his feet or hips. Audrey was just kind of dancing, not salsaing. Meh.

Witney informs us that her mom named her after Whitney Houston. So obviously her mom is a terrible speller. Also, Whitney Houston is dead. In any case, they danced really well to a great song and Stacey Tookey put together an amazing routine. And, wow, Mary Murphy can’t even put together a coherent sentence. Also, Stacey Tookey was probably nominated for an Emmy, not an Oscar. But what the hell do I know.

Hmm, a ballerina and a robot? Sounds like a stretch. Everyone seemed to like it as the judges gave it a standing ovation. I really feel like Tabitha and Napoleon haven’t been up to the past season and I didn’t feel like this worked all that well. But then again, what the hell do I know?

The bottom three girls from last weeks votes are Amber, Lindsay, and Eliana. The bottom three guys are George, Brandon, and Dareian. The judges want to see Amber, Eliana, Brandon, Dareian dance again. My gut says that means they are pretty up on Lindsay and George. I’m surprised by the choice to make Eliana dance.

I’m not really sure of the purpose for making them dance again. It seems like we’ve seen enough of them and know how versatile they are, so there isn’t much need to see their style. On the other hand, it was nice to see them dance their own style since for some, it has been awhile.

The judges end up saving Lindsay (obviously) and Eliana (makes sense). Amber is going home. Too bad, given the routine she and Brandon did. For the guys, the judges saved George (obviously) and Dareian (also a good choice). Brandon is going home and I guess I could see that. I never felt like I ever really knew much about him throughout the show.

So what did you guys think? Agree with the eliminated? Any favorite routines from tonight? Who are in your bottom threes? Let me know and I’ll see you mid-August!

Thanks for the shout-out! I am proud to be known for my hatred of Cat Deely. I am sorry to hear about your brother in law. At least you’re not related by blood! Tonight I liked Stacy Tooky the best, followed by both Mandy Moore routines (I thought Amelia and Will’s was neat to watch, although maybe not that impressive. I also liked the robot and the ballerina, non-sensical as it was. Janelle and Dareian should be in trouble. Not sure who else!

I must be one of the few people who like Cat, the whole jidges thing notwithstanding. Though she has stopped that.

Loved Witney & Chehon/Stacy Tookey. Amazing. I was a bit sad to see Brandon go. I think he is a great all around dancer for a stepper.

I like Cat too. I don’t quite love her like I used to, but I still like her. I’ve always liked how much she cares about the contestants compared to other hosts. And a few seasons back she’d called the jidges out on their hypocrisy in the dancer’s defense (I think it was during the Jose period). I wish she did that more often though.

I’ve always been a fan of Mandy Moore’s pieces on this show, so I was glad to see her back.

Felt bad for Amber & Brandon, since they did so well this week. They got screwed over a bit with the new format, but I wasn’t surprised by the judge’s choice. It just sucks that the best dancers of the night all can end up in the bottom together since it’s based the previous week’s performances. It is nice not having to tune in separately for a results show though.

I don’t really have any favorites yet, but I’m just not a fan of George. Maybe it’s the mustache throwing me off? I just don’t see what they see in him.

And should we take bets on how soon until NappyTabs choreographs a dance about the labor pains/delivery with a hospital bed as a prop?

Again, I wasn’t suprised by the bottom 6 or who they chose to send home.

My favorite routine of the night was Witney and Keyon again this week. I am really starting to really love Witney. Shoot me now.

In the bottom I have Tiffany, Janelle (she just needs to GO. That Cha Cha was a MESS) and Audrey. Bottom boys are George, Darian and Matt.

I really hope Nappy Tabs pops out that baby sometime in the next two weeks so we don’t see any more of their shitty hip hip this season. Can’t Twitch come in and do hip hop? I am so sick of those two.

My main issue this season so far (besides the overuse of the same choreographers over and over) is that most of the ones they are using seem to be dumbing down their choreography so try and make the dancers look good and they are failing miserably. The dancers need to be challenged and to rise up to the choreography. Especially the ballroom/Latin dances. They should be some of the most difficult and they are sadly lacking in the core elements so that the cha cha doesn’t eve look like a cha cha and doen’t even get me started on that quickstep,

Bla. So two week break. I might need it.

Janelle reminds me of Sanjaya when he was on Idol. He was terrible (my god, that “Waiting on the World to Change” with the hand motion) but was so popular that he kept hanging on and hanging on. I’m really hoping that she will improve but it is not looking good.

I used to run around the house saying, “GEEGEES!!!” I am so annoying.

Re: George – Yes, it is the mustache throwing you off. Totally gross.

This Nappy Tabs baby is going to be a blessing to the world of hiphop dance.

    Exactly.
