Wow, that was an INTENSE episode of Covert Affairs, am I right? I definitely felt a lot like Annie when she was standing in the operations room, holding her breath while waiting to see if Auggie and Parker would make that jump. Thankfully, everyone made it out alive and lived happily ever after…or did they?
We more or less jump straight in where the last episode left off, with Auggie in Eritrea with Parker, ready to propose, and Annie reminiscing about her time with Simon in Munich (anyone else think she’s enjoying this operation a little too much?). Unfortunately for us shirtless Auggie covers up quickly and is forced to postpone celebrating his engagement (she said yes!) because of some not so nice Somali Pirates who take Auggie, Parker, and her two fellow Peace Corps buddies captive. At this point in the episode I assumed Parker would end up getting killed because no way Auggie gets married to someone who is not Annie! In any case, since Auggie is a smart guy he manages to alert Annie to his troubles and she immediately gets on the case with Lena’s, and eventually, Joan’s help.
Annie gets kind of delegated to the role of a parent when she has to mediate between Lena and Joan. Those two really can’t seem to work together without going at each other’s throats. We get some more info on the whole Nairobi backstory and, by the looks of it, Lena endangered one of Joan’s assets (Jonathan) and subsequently got him killed. Seems like Joan also had a thing going with this asset so the whole thing is intensely personal (I wonder if Arthur knows about all of this). Joan takes a dig at Lena about how she’s “still bending the rules” and I think it’s quite obvious that Joan seriously disapproves of the way Lena handles her affairs.
I also think Joan’s very worried about what kind of person and agent Annie is becoming under Lena’s tutelage. The look on Joan’s face when Lena and Annie almost high-five each other after Simon calls is priceless! She looks very disappointed to say the least! I wonder if we’ll get more into the whole Nairobi thing, it looks like it could shed some light on what kind of person Lena is and how far she is willing to go to get what she wants. Lena totally took a dig at Joan as well when suggesting Joan wasn’t flexible enough to get the results she needs.
On that note, I suspect Annie is all kinds of flexible with Simon.
Back in Eritrea, Auggie and co. are being held to ransom by the pirates and, interestingly, an American woman, Annalise, who seems to have had some dealings with Lena in the past. We don’t see much of Annalise after the ransom negotiations go sour but I wonder if she’ll pop up again in relation to Lena. At least it seems kind of strange to include her so much in the episode and then not see how she fares after the hostages escape.
I guess time will tell!
Amid the tense hostage situation, Auggie is forced to reveal his identity as a CIA agent to Parker and she does not react very well to that revelation at all! Honestly, I thought she was being a bit over-dramatic about the whole thing. So your fiance is a spy, yes that’s a shock but why would she just automatically stop trusting him because of it (especially in the situation they’re in)? I don’t know. Unless she also has something to hide…Think about it, after they escape and Parker seemingly gets over the whole spy thing and says yes again, what is that look on her face when Auggie hugs her? Is it the look of someone that has second thoughts OR is it the look of someone that has something to hide? The whole speech Auggie makes before he re-proposes is about not keeping any secrets, so that leads me to believe that maybe Parker has some secrets of her own. This is a spy show after all, everyone has an agenda of their own! In any case, I doubt there’ll be a happily ever after for Auggie and Parker!
Also, jumping from roof to roof when there are people with guns chasing you? Not recommended! But how nerve-wrecking was that scene?!? I still thought Parker was going to bite it so I was sure she wouldn’t make it to the other side.
Random thoughts: the show seems to be in a hurry to get rid of anything that tethers Annie to a “normal” life. If the point is to make her feel truly lost in her new role then I think relocating her sister to California is a move in that direction. With Auggie’s impending nuptials and by not having Danielle to just sit down with and engage in some ice-cream filled conversation, will definitely make Annie lose her foothold a bit.
More random thoughts: Yay for some shirtless Auggie action! Sad face because we didn’t get any more information on the whole Jai/Simon/weird symbol thing! Happy that Annie knows Auggie the best (though I would think Joan knows him pretty well after working with him for some years) and saves him! I’m all for the Annie and Auggie show but I really hope we start getting some more intel on what Jai was mixed up in and how Simon figures into it all!
Next week: Simon comes to town and Annie works with the FBI. All of which probably means no shirtless Auggie, though here’s hoping for some shirtless Simon!
