Welcome back for the third Top 20 week in a row! First it was choosing the Top 20. Then it was the Top 20 performing and not getting eliminated. Now it is the Top 20 and two guys and two girls will be eliminated.
Guest judge for tonight was Adam Shankman. He apparently has a new movie coming out and can’t stop saying “Step up – MOVIE PLUG!” after every performance. We get it Adam – you have a new movie called Step Up Revolution coming out this Friday in a theater near me. I understand that is about a group called The Mob that does flash mobs around Miami. I get that it stars Kathryn, Twitch, and Philip. But you know what? I don’t care because Batman: The Dark Knight Rises is coming out.
We start off the show with what the wife and I were convinced was a Sonya Tayeh routine involving Cyrus as a half-man/half-woman and everyone else dressed up all crazy in make up. Imagine our surprise when we found it was actually everyone’s favorite hiphop duo, Tabitha and her fetus! Love it.
Cole and Lindsay did a Christopher Scott hiphop routine about a nerdy dude at the dentist. Good god, Cole would not snap out of character. He was freaking me out, man. Lindsay was not very good at all. Not a fan of her teeth either. That is not a euphemism. She looks like she just has one giant, pearly white tooth spanning her entire mouth.
Will and Amelia are doing a very touching contemporary routine. Shockingly enough, it is by Sonya. Totally didn’t expect that out of her, although she has been toning down the attitude this season. Our little Sonya is growing up. Will continues to freak me out by dancing like a little dude and then towering over everyone else. Amelia was not irritating this week. She unshallacked her hair, has her bangs a bit longer, and wasn’t not being a weirdo in general.
Nick and Amber are up next with a Tango. Boring. I’d much rather see a Chacha or a Rumba or something. They are good, but I guess I just have a hard time caring much.
I heard someone on Twitter refer to Matthew as “Cross-eyed Gosling.” I don’t really care for the R-word, so it is nice to find a replacement for “Retarded Ryan Gosling.” Anyway, this routine was pretty good. Much more in line with Sonya’s typical MO. I still don’t care for Audrey’s mushy face, but she was very aggressive in her dancing.
Dareian and Janelle had a nice, fun routine but nothing special. No flips, amazing lifts, or tricks. Just dancing. I don’t think that is problem because I think both Dareian and Janelle have nice fanbases that will be going to bat for them irregardless of their performance. And jeepers, with the kiss. What a couple of horny teenagers. Also, GET OFF MY LAWN!
Next up is Brandon and Janaya. They did a Broadway routine that was one of the better broadway routines we’ve seen on the show. I’m not saying it’s because it wasn’t a Tyce routine, but it was probably because it wasn’t a Tyce routine. They really filled out the characters in a way that other dancers didn’t.
Eliana and Cyrus drew jive this week. Holy shit, this could have been a disaster. Cyrus was concentrating on being a partner so his footwork was atrocious. Whatever, he was having a great time. Eliana has moved up in the standings for me the most out of any other dancer on the show so far. I like her and think she is great.
As a sidebar, we got a little insight into how they get assigned dances this year. Each team draws a number then they get to pick from a pool of dances in the order of their numbers. Basically, early pickers get to pick their style and late pickers get screwed over. Personally, I don’t like this because it doesn’t challenge those luck enough to pick early. I think Nick royally screwed himself over by picking his style each time.
Would you be shocked if I told you that Alexa did nothing to connect with her partner or the audience? No. No you would not. Because she didn’t. Daniel didn’t either. The bathtub idea was interesting, but Daniel and Alexa managed to make it completely boring. I almost fell asleep. Also, Yanni? Really?
George and Tiffany got the foxtrot. I like the dance, but it is really one of those styles that just doesn’t really do it for me. I feel very lowbrow by saying I love hiphop, bollywood, etc, but I don’t think I’m alone. In any case, they danced very well. Pro-tip for George: Shave that awful mustache. Gross.
Chehon and Witney wrapped up the show with Bollywood. I love this stuff. They did a great job with a very difficult routine.
So you may remember me mentioning Adam’s movie that is coming out. Well, they had a bunch of the dancers perform one of the number from the movie, I guess. It was kind of a medley of different stuff. We got to see some Kathryn, Twitch, and Philip. Also, there was a lady in a stripy shirt at the end behind Cat that totally looked like Kristen Wiig and was being a distracting weirdo in the background. Just like Kristen Wiig. So check that out.
UPDATE: Here is a video that actually has the weird Kristen Wiig chick in the background.
The bottom three girls ended up being Janaya, Alexa, and Witney. Witney ended up being saved. I think it was her Bollywood that saved her. Alexa – good riddance. Janaya, I’m pretty apathetic over her. Never liked or disliked her.
The bottom three guys ended up being Nick, Daniel, and Chehon. Same as the girls, I think Chehon’s Bollywood saved him as well. I never cared for Nick, but Daniel seemed a bit surprising. I think he was dragged down a bit by that emotional dead-weight, Alexa.
Overall, I think America and the judges got it exactly right. For next week, I think Lindsay, Tiffany, and Witney could be in trouble. On the guy’s side, the competition seems to be much stiffer. However, I could see Cross-eyed Gosling, Brandon, and Chehon being in trouble. Cyrus is probably one that should go home, but I think he has too many fans.
So who is going to be on the chopping block next week? Anyone who stood out for you this week? Are you going to see Dark Knight Rises or Adam Shankman’s new movie, Step Up Revolution? Let me know!
