SYTYCD. Who? Who? Who?

So last night was the So You Think You Can Dance top 20 selection show. They did it a bit different as it was a combo live show and previously recorded show. They selected the top 20 in groups by genre and then had them dance in groups.

Sitting in the guest judge chair is the ever adorkable (kill me now) Zooey Deschanel. Within the first 10 second of her talking, I knew she was going to be in the worst judge all-stars with Debbie Allen and that one pervy old lady they had on last year that wanted to take Wadi home with her (Wikipedia tells me her name is Debbie Reynolds). The wife suggested the three of them should do an all-guest-host night.

So, as typically happens, I had a number of “Who? Who? Who?” moments during this episode. People like Alexa (barf) get a ton of camera time during Vegas week for being petulant children while other dancers who were amazing, never got a second of screen time.

Below I’ve embedded the performances, but Fox has put the full episodes online behind a paywall. Basically, in order to watch an episode originally shown for free on network television, you have to subscribe to cable or satellite. Makes sense, right. Fox, get your collective heads out of your collective asses. No one signed up for cable or satellite so they can watch SYTYCD online, dummies. Basically, the embedded videos could disappear at any time. Let me know in the comments if they do.

The first group was four contemporary dancers and had two “Who?”s: Giant-ass Will and the black chick who was never coming back a couple of seasons ago (hint: she did come back). They did really well to a routine by Tyce that he had to have ripped off from Travis. I mean, come on, it included a bench.

Next was the ballet group. Holy shit, 3 ballerinas (or whatever the fuck dude ballerinas are called – ballerinos?). In any case, technically, these might be the three best dancers ever on the show. In any case, they had a great routine.

Ballroom consisted of the two blond girls that could have been twins if it weren’t for the fact that they look nothing alike. Once is tall and skinny and the other one will likely end up looking like her mom (ie: NOT GOOD). The dude they danced with was another “Who?”.

Two jazz girls were put with the belly dancer, who ended up getting sick and not dancing. Since there was no vote this week, it didn’t really matter, but I definitely thought it was weird that the belly dancer would have to dance with the jazz dancers anyway. In any case, they were not in sync and were overall pretty terrible. The routine was not some of Sonya’s finest work. Also, Zooey has no idea what she is talking about because she thought they were in sync the whole time. Clearly they were not.

The second set of contemporary dancers was amazingly boring. I thought it was good at the beginning, but then I just stopped watching. I have nothing else to say here except that the pasty silent movie girl might be the most hateable person on the show this season. I’m going to call her “Female Jess” from here on out.

The last group was the hip-hoppers, but that is kind of a misnomer since they were all varied in their styles (Cyrus – animator, Cole – martial arts, and Brandon – stepper). The choreography was by Christopher Scott and I’ve had complaints about him in the past that he is a bit too heavy-handed at trying to incorporate a story into his dance. Fortunately that worked incredibly well this time around with the baseball theme. I would give this “best performance of the night” accolades. Anyway, if you don’t watch any of the others, be sure to watch this one.

I’m not going to comment on them because I’m lazy, but here are the girls, the guys, and the girls and the guys.

Ok, I lied. My laziness was overwhelmed by a need to rip on those awful outfits that the dudes were wearing. Nigel called them maternity pants, but I felt like they were dressed as disco divas with their bellbottoms and tube tops. Seriously. Who the hell is getting fired for those awful costumes? Heads better roll. Also, dudes partnering with dudes was just weird. Sorry Sonya.

So what did you think of the top 20? Caliber of dancers higher or lower than in the past? Any fan favorites or favorites to win the show? Don’t forget there will be a winning girl and a winning guy. Also, don’t forget to comment!

NEVER BESMIRCH THE CHOREOGRAPHY OF STACEY TOOKEY AGAIN.
Also, male ballet dancers are called “ballet dancers.” *fingerguns* [Ok, typically if they are dancing a lead role in a ballet, they are called the cavalier. But that's sort of outdated.]
And. Oh my Zooey. I do love her, but I also felt bad for her because it was obvious that her being on that panel is because Fox somehow wrote into her New Girl contract that she had to do reality show panels for them.
I’m also a very large fan of how Cat Deely called herself the BFG.
    THAT IS ALL.

I couldn’t tell most of the dancers apart and knew literally not one name.

Due to my heavy use of the fast forward button I didn’t even notice one of the girls wasn’t there until the very end dance with everyone and there was a lone guy standing at the end of the line looking stupid doing nothing.

I don’t imagine the dude with the giant holes in his ears being good at anything but his own style, which I don’t even get. It’s boring. The super pale chick’s schtick is getting old already. The asian dude seemed really good, but his movements looked too quick compared to the other guys in that baseball routine.

Clearly, Cat is the best part of this show.

I agree that it was strange that there are so many in the top twenty that we had seen little to nothing of. I also loved the baseball dance…I thought that was pretty cool.
Love Debbie Allen though ! (and Debbie Reynolds for that matter, but just not as a judge :) )

Hey, maybe Debbie Reynolds is great but all I saw was her being a weirdo on the show. On Debbie Allen though, totally disagree. She just loves everybody and never has a bad thing to say, which I consider a problem if you are supposed to be a judge helping contestants improve.

Yeah, we were laughing pretty hard at the dude chilling on the end of the line during the everyone dance. The girls kept switching to partners on each side of them, so the lonely guy kept switching ends.

More disagreement: Cat is terrible. Her droopy eyes annoy me and she just has the worst jokes and comments. I was cracking up pretty good when she was standing next to the two little jazz girls. Cat is like 6 feet tall (6’3″ with heels probably) and she was standing next to two 5 footers in bare feet. Amazon woman.

Cavalier. I’ve filed that away for future use. I still like ballerinos though.

As for Zooey, apparently she begged to go on the show. I guess she has some pull because some exec is now explaining to his boss how that trainwreck happened.

Zooey: “Siri, should I be a guest judge on SYTYCD?”
Siri: “What are you? A fucking idiot? No, that is a terrible idea.”

    Haha, BFG.

EDIT: I usually like Stacey Tookey. She is Canadian, same as my wife, so I have a soft spot. But that routine was BORING.

I have decided they made everyone look like everyone else so that no one dancer would have a built in fan base come the first voting show. They dressed everyone alike and did their hair alike.

Come on, was belly dancer girl really sick or would she have been too much of a standout? I remember picking Melanie out from the minute she made the top 20 last year because it didn’t matter what she did, I couldn’t take my eyes off her.

Now, going into the first week, I don’t really know anyone or have even a remote favorite. Although the ballet dude seems to be a dud and I wasn’t a fan of that puffy guy either.

As far as the girls go, I really like the belly dancer in auditions so even though she didn’t dance this week, she’s still at the top of my list.

“I remember picking Melanie out from the minute she made the top 20 last year because it didn’t matter what she did, I couldn’t take my eyes off her.”

Was it because of her giant head?

Agree, belly dancer is the fan fave I think.
