THE VOICE. Semifinals Performance. I Don’t Know About Skinny Love, I’m More Into BIG Love.

Just a friendly little cat

Tonight we finally got all the teams performing on the same night. I still seem to find myself almost forgetting who has made it. Especially with Team Blake and Team Christina. Two weeks is a long time in the entertainment world.

Christina wore a crown. My only guess is she wanted us to know she is the Queen Bitch. If this were RuPaul’s Drag Race I’d say she was throwing shade, but since this is The Voice I’ll say she was dissing Tony at every opportunity. It was more than blatant. Cee Lo decided his giant pussy wasn’t getting enough attention so he put its face on a shirt. He also went without his sunglasses.

This post is nearly 1300 words so dive in at your own risk…

TEAM ADAM

Tony Lucca “How You Like Me Now” Hum, is it just me or are Tony and Christina not so secretly in a major feud. This song has to be directed at her and then she goes and says she’s the one that cleared the song for Moses to sing. Bitter much? The performance was alright. The backup girls were pretty much the opposite of sexy. I don’t know if it was the outfits or the way they moved, but something was off. Blake said he had a “Robert Palmer thing” happening. Christina told him that if this didn’t work out Adam and Tony could start a Britney cover band. She also got bleeped for saying “Jesus Christ.” Cee Lo brought out his best Godfather voice and said it was really good.

Katrina Parker “Killing Me Softly” The first thing I noticed was she looked really good. Not like she did in the group number. Poor thing. This was The Fugee’s version of the song almost note for note. That’s not a bad thing. I’m sure I would have complained if they had messed with it. I thought she sounded much better than last week. Blake commented on her ability to sound “seasoned” and as though she’s been professionally performing for years. He also said she has an awesome tone. Christina went on a rant about how good she is and how Adam should “take a look at Katrina Parker.” She really, really doesn’t want Tony to win. Cee Lo wanted Roberta Flack to get some recognition and I agree. Adam pointed out the greatness of Lauryn Hill and that Katrina did a great job.

TEAM BLAKE

Erin Willet “Without You” Another song that starts too low just so she can hit the high notes later. I understand the reasoning behind it, I just think it does her a disservice. She was sometimes flat and because of her emotion the notes were messy. I understand and think that emotion in a song is a good thing, but not if it compromises your singing. She shouldn’t have picked the song if she couldn’t get through it. Christina liked that is was Erin’s own rendition of the song and the emotion she put into it. Cee Lo is enjoying the high talent from everyone. Blake wishes he had a tenth of her heart and her strength.

Jermaine Paul “Open Arms” This was very much like the original except for a few runs here and there. Journey is pretty classic and you really have to try harder to make it your own. Any good singer can make one of these ballads good. I just didn’t feel any special connection. Christina tells him he is “crazy talented.” Adam informs him he is “no longer a background singer.” Blake says he is peaking at the right time and can win the entire competition.

The Queen of Bitchiness herself

TEAM CHRISTINA

Chris Mann “Ave Maria” Man, this guy has amazing control of his voice. The opening verse was a master class in the right volume, phrasing, and control. The staging was awesome with spotlights behind him. I know I’ve given him a lot of shit throughout the competition and even thought he shouldn’t have been the top pick from America last week. I take it all back. That was awesome. Maybe he isn’t and shouldn’t win this particular show, but he has a career in music ahead of him. Cee Lo said it was “Perfect.” Christina loved it so much she went on stage to hug him.

Lindsey Pavao “Skinny Love” I’ve never heard this Bon Iver song, which I think is always an advantage to the singer. I have no pre-concieved notions as to how it should sound. She is quiet and understated, but it totally works for her. The staging was great for her. Intimate is what she needs to shine. She sounded great. The girl has a very unique tone that is current versus Chris Mann. Cee Lo made his Big Love comment and enjoyed being able to hear her. Adam loves that every single one of the remaining artists are different and unique. Blake told Christina she was smart to bring it back to where they started and remind the audience of their strengths, both Lindsey and Chris. Xtina jumped on stage once again to give a hug. I’m starting to think she just wants more camera time.

TEAM CEE LO

Jamar Rogers “If You Don’t Know Me By Now” This was pretty much arranged by Jamar. I thought it was a great take on the song. You can really tell that he has passion for the music when he sings. After it’s over Jamar is jumping up and down he’s so excited. Adam said forgetting about the competition for a second. He is a fan. Blake liked Jamar going for the unexpected with the super low note at the end. Christina takes the opportunity to sing, of course, and says she liked the, I don’t know what to call it, wave in the notes? It’s not a run but more of an undulation. Anyway, he said he got that from her. Cee Lo talked about Jamar being a great success story.

Well, they're no giant wings.

Juliet Simms “It’s A Man’s, Man’s, Man’s World”Juliet’s Boyfriend mouthed “Fuck Yeah” at the end and I think that pretty much sums it up. It was crazy good. She stood up there and sang the song not only in her own way but beautifully. It had a rock twinge but was overall very subdued for her. Carson once again claimed it was the loudest it had ever been in there. No truer words from Adam, “You are the one to beat tonight.” Christina had to talk about herself, surprise, surprise, and bring up when she sang the same song at the Grammy’s or somewhere. With time running out Cee Lo just says, “You killed it.”

TEAM CEE LO & TEAM ADAM “All These Things That I’ve Done” I don’t have a whole lot to say about the group performances. I will say this is where my “Poor Katrina” phrase comes from. The poor soul looked pregnant. That is never a look any human being should have to endure. Unless they are in fact with child. I don’t think that’s the case with Katrina. She looked amazing in her solo performance so it’s not like the wardrobe department doesn’t know how to dress her. Other than that they all sounded pretty great and the performance was equally good.

TEAM BLAKE & TEAM CHRISTINA “Edge of Glory” I guess they’re going to rename themselves Team Denim. This group performance wasn’t as kind to the contestants. You know Christina probably picked this song yet both of her artists were completely out of place. Neither Chris nor Lindsey is meant to sing Gaga. Team Blake actually did pretty well.

Now that we’re to the final 8 I can rank them. They’re all good singers and they all deserve to be in the semifinals:

  • Juliet Simms (Cee Lo has a tough decision between the two.)
  • Jamar Rogers
  • Lindsey Pavao (Who will Christina choose?)
  • Chris Mann
  • Jermaine Paul (Blake is a wild card. Will he be blatant with his pick?)
  • Katrina Parker
  • Tony Lucca (Do you think Adam knows he’s low man on the totem pole?)
  • Erin Willet

This is my list, what’s yours? Does Christina need to cloak her hate a bit better? Who will the judges give the most points to? Will it be enough to effect the outcome? COMMENT to share with the class!

Christina has been arguing with Adam since the beginning of the season because Javier, from his team, won.  She turned her chair for Tony and was very nice to him in the beginning, but once he made it to the live shows she turned nasty. I think she was a little bit jealous that he was a older frequently featured singer on the Mickey Mouse club, but  her nastiness has actually seemed to help him on the voice.  I feel bad that someone who knew him and knew his talent, would treat him this way.  Christina will favor Lindsey. I think Adam knows his team isn’t as good, but he is trying to make the best of it.
