Oh my GOD, you guys. This episode was so fucking good. Why hasn’t the entire SEASON been this good? Whatever. I don’t care. Don’t think about it. Let’s just be excited about how awesome tonight was and start talking about it. YAY!
Let’s start with why it was so good. First of all, everyone was at school! I know. No one was learning anything. But they were there, so that’s fun. I’ll take it. Secondly, the stakes (heh) were raised and thirdly, the story was cohesive and everyone was involved and engaged in one particular thing. I like that, and I think this episode was really a good argument for getting back to our lives pre-Originals. Or at least, most of them. It seems counterintuitive, but I think having fewer characters and storylines to juggle helps keep these plots tighter and actually leads to more surprises and twists.
Okay, the first person we have to talk about is Caroline because I love her forever. And you guys, she does so much with so little time. I loved her decorating for the dance, teasing Elena about Damon while grilling her about Stefan (and playing matchmaker a little bit), bitching at Rebekah, and yelling at the boys for not “trickling” the stars just right. Oh, Caroline, never change. Also, I totally felt the chemistry between her and Matt again this week. I thought we were going there, but then she warned him off Elena. Again … I don’t see it. There’s no heat between those two, and I totally forgot that the show was making that a thing until they reminded me. I mean, I understand that the show can’t help the fact that Caroline has chemistry with everyone, and if they used all that chemistry, this show would all just be one giant gangbang with Caroline in the middle.* But still, I don’t know how I feel about trying to force a pairing on us that seems totally unbelievable. And I guess … not even a PAIRING. I don’t even buy that Matt would have a crush on Elena.
*I would so totally watch that show.
Okay, so then at the dance when Tyler showed up (looking super hot and gangsterlicious), I mean … it’s not like much really happened, BUT I loved them just hanging out, dancing, and I totally admit to loving Tyler’s jealousy of Klaus (including his bitchy line about him drawing her a picture, hee!).
Here’s the thing, though. Tyler and Caroline were always a super hot couple. And they still are. But you can start to see a really subtle shift, and it’s mostly because of Klaus. There is serious HEAT between those two, and it’s … impressive. And I love the way she especially plays it. It’s like … she can’t help it, and she always seems very, very subtly surprised by it. And she’ll kind of lose herself for a moment, and then she’ll play it off like disgust. And you know … you get the impression that she IS disgusted, but maybe with herself. It’s almost like there’s some guilt there, and when it hits her, that’s how she manages to cope with it–by acting like HE’S the asshole. Which, you know. And I feel like the guilt in that situation probably extends past just the intense Klaus connection and actually into the fact that maybe she knows that deep down, Klaus is right about her. And man, you guys. I love it. Klaus has Caroline DOWN. Every time he says anything about her, or predicts her future behavior, I DIE because either I’m like, YES, that’s so her! or YES! I can totally see her doing that! Me and Klaus should be writing this damn blog together.
Really, though. It’s all here in this look:
Also high on the list of things I loved in this episode was the reunion (the non-kissing reunion, now that I think about it) of Stefan and Elena. God, you guys. Why do I almost have a happy heart attack every time those two have a meaningful phone call? It’s like Paul Wesley is able to glean super acting powers just from holding a phone. It makes no sense but I love it. And I loved how that scene was shot, because mostly the camera was on Elena, and you didn’t know what was going to happen–plus the whole Damon road trip thing was fresh in all our minds–and then Stefan is just so happy and sweet, and his goofy smile is goddamn adorable:
And of course it totally carried through to him showing up on her doorstep with a corsage and there was a lot of cute flirty eyes happening, and compliments, and general adorableness. Now … I would not call myself a shipper, mainly because … GOD. And also because my enjoyment of the show doesn’t hinge on a particular relationship (except possibly Damon and Alaric’s bromance), but at some point, I started loving Stefan and Elena together. And don’t get me wrong–the Damon hotel eye-fucking/makeout session was SO HOT, but I’m with Caroline (shocking)–Stefan is her epic love. Of course, I reserve the right to change my mind, but that’s where I’m at right now. And it’s nice to see Stefan being good to her–giving her space but support, letting her work the Damon stuff out, etc., because it’s the least he can do after all he’s put her through. That was nice. And so was the callback to the gym scene where he had to turn off his humanity.
Speaking of the gym … good goddamn, Nina Dobrev was increeeeeeeedible in that scene. She’s an awesome crier, and that’s not really news, but sometimes when she’s talking you just get so much vulnerability from her. Her delivery of “Who gave you that horrible advice?” was SO PERFECT–maybe one of the best moments we’ve seen from her. You can just see her trying to keep it all together but when she finally admits that she has no one left, and there’s no one to take care of her and just loses it … it was really, really powerful. She did a great job.
Alright, now before we get to the most epic, awesome, and all around pretty perfect part of the episode, let’s just get Bonnie out of the way. Ugh, god, I hate her so fucking much. Even when she’s helping people I like I actively root for her death. Now, I will say that Kat Graham looked absolutely STUNNING in flapper gear–she might be the worst character but she also had the best outfit, so that. BUT. She still sucks.
Okay, so they started giving us more Bonnie and Jamie, whose couple name shall henceforth be known as BJ, because they are the only black people on this show and therefore must date, OR SOMETHING. Whatever. Don’t get me started. Anyway, what do you think was less painful, being on a date with Bonnie or being strangled Darth Vader style, all arm-out and lifted off the ground? I’d take the strangling, personally. But did anyone else find it weird how they go back to her place, where they establish that no one’s home, and he very sweetly offers to stay with her, and there’s no action being had, which I get because, you know, big night or whatever, but why in the actual, factual FUCK were they sleeping on top of the covers on the bed in their dance clothes? All that beading couldn’t have been comfortable for Bonnie, and Jamie, for the love of GOD, had his shirt buttoned all the way to the top. IN BED. I mean, Bonnie lives with her dad, right? Surely she can track down a loaner pair of sweatpants and a t-shirt, right? And she just has no excuse. Sigh.
But really, all the worst parts of Bonnie were on display tonight. She’s just SUCH a plot contrivance at every turn, and on top of it, she’s such a fucking bitch. Does she really need to be SO goddamn pissy about everything? Just for once on this fucking show, I would like to see someone genuinely and sincerely thank Bonnie (which they very often do), and just have it end in her saying, “You’re welcome,” rather than, “I didn’t do it for you.” Yeah, okay, we fucking GET IT, Bonnie. SHUT UP. Just shut the fuck up. Yeah, you’re never doing it for whoever thanked you and whoever you’re helping never thanks you. Boo fucking hoo, get over it. GOD.
Can we please trade her out already for a GOOD witch, like this one?
I dare you to not have that song in your head for the rest of your life. And also to not think of that video and giggle throughout the day. Happy Friday from me to you.
Oh, wait, there is one other thing before we get to the big stuff, and that is Jeremy. You guys, how long have I been saying that he needs to be an additional long-lost Winchester? Forever, right? Well, apparently everyone is listening to me because check it:
You know what? Fuck it. Let’s not wait around–everybody get to writing him into Wincest fanfic STAT.
Also … I don’t even want to know why two teenage busboys who are MINORS have a key to the Grill and unlimited access to the restaurant’s booze. I always wonder why the Grill is constantly in danger of going out of business, but I’m starting to see the problem. Who is in charge here, anyway?
But yeah … appropriate way to celebrate Alcoholaric’s inappropriate life, I suppose.
(Pause to say I found a lot of fun gifs, but I left TONS of hot ones out there for HBC‘s weekly gif post, not the least of which was Jeremy with a crossbow, HOLY HELL. Also, friendly reminder that she takes requests on whatever shows you watch–HINT HINT.)
Okay. Alaric. You guys, I … this was all just SO SO good. I hardly even know where to start. First of all, that scene with Esther where she made the ultimate weapon … I was like in AWE of that scene. It looked SO COOL. The effects were really great, and I felt like I was watching a legitimate sci-fi or fantasy movie. And Esther and Alaric were both so serious–Matt Davis was smoking hot this entire episode and just gave a fantastic performance, but that scene really impressed me. I looked all over the place for a cool gif of it, but even though the internet will gif Damon grabbing Elena’s hand at the Motel 6, it refuses to gif something so badass. Sigh. Fuckin’ teenyboppers, I tell ya.
Anyway, so I’m all blown away by that scene, so much so that I’m having a hard time coming back to earth to hear all the mythology and catch all the betraying, but I got the gist and thought it was a neat touch that Esther had made Michael into a vampire vampire hunter. And I did not miss the part that when it’s all over, Alaric will die … mysteriously.
Now here’s where the show got me. I TOTALLY thought they were killing him. It made perfect sense, and after my whole thing last week about them going soft, I was like, yeah, this is what I get. So the ending was a HUGE shock for me, but I did love it. And I’m excited for Matt Davis because whenever he gets to play the bad guy, he just seems like he’s having such a great time.
You guys … he can ACT. There were so many scenes, starting with the one with everyone standing outside, where I thought I was going to cry. I never quite got there, and I realize now that it may have been intentional by the show. The characters would start to tear up, and we’d move to someone else. It didn’t take away from the intensity of the scenes, I don’t think, it just kept pushing me toward that emotional cliff without letting me go over it. Although it sounds like at some point in the future, they’re gonna give me a good hard kick in the ass and I’ll go flying.
He was great with everyone, you know? Saying that taking care of Jeremy and Elena was the closest thing he ever got to the life he always wanted was mega depressing, but … also weirdly touching, right? Oh, and he KILLED me when he said maybe he deserved all this after all he’d done. Aw, Alaric, no you did not. It was out of your control, and you didn’t deserve this at all. Come on, now. And of course there was him and Damon, making death jokes and drinking was … fitting. Aw, and Damon and Meredith even had a moment. It’s so weird how funerals (which, let’s face it, is totally what they were having) do that. And him looking out at all the people who love him one last time … I mean, it’s all shitty but if you’ve gotta go, that seems pretty nice, right?
Okay, I’ve gone on for years and there’s STILL stuff I didn’t get to, Klaus’s weird tantrum at Esther’s body being the one that stands out. Oh, and how a bunch of high school kids know so many dances from the 20′s and are willingly doing them. And also how one town had so many available 20′s costumes. I better stop now.
Anyway, you guys, comment comment comment! We don’t have many episodes left this season and I desperately need to feel your love. And then I can thank you for your comments and you can tell me that you didn’t do it for me! It’ll be so fun and awesome, whaddaya say?
